This morning, the kids practiced piano, read books, and played quietly until it was time to go to the Veteran’s day ceremony. We’ve been going since Brandon was in pre-school, as a way to have the kids appreciate the holiday and why they were off school. We missed one year since, when we flew to Florida for one of my runs. This year, I had both kids solo, I think for the first time ever. I laid down the ground rules, and the importance of being respectful, giving up their chairs for the elderly and being quiet. We arrived about 20 minutes early, but in enough time to find parking, which is usually tight, and walk to the area. When we arrived, we took our usual spot by the far wall. It’s a place for the kids to sit where they can see the ceremony, but not taking chairs away from the veterans or their families. Both were happy to receive their flags and programs. The ceremony started right after 11 am. The kids were very quiet after the chorus started to sing the national anthem. Brandon knew to put his right hand over his heart. I put Peyton’s there, and held her up so she could see. They remained quiet throughout the entire program, lasting about 90 minutes. I think they particularly enjoyed the songs. One speaker was a SEAL, and Brandon actually listened to his speech. I tested him after, and he knew he’d talked about DUTY and SACRIFICE. We talked about what each of those words meant. I quizzed him on some of the other roles of the speakers, and he actually had paid attention to some of it. Peyton was there for the ride, but she saw one of her former classmates there. We thought we might see them after, but we tried to find them after and I think they left already. We walked across the street to have lunch, as promised for good behavior, and the kids got to order what they wanted. Both picked scrambled egg (whites) and sausage, plus the famous blueberry coffee cake. They were brought out a fruit happy face, and knew to avoid the whipped cream dollops. They scarfed down their food when it arrived, and they were a bit disappointed when I cut the humongous piece in half to eat now and save for later. We wrapped up lunch, and then headed home. The kids went to play nicely, while I enjoyed some of my cake with coffee I’d forgotten to drink earlier in the morning. Peyton wrote more in her book log, then they headed outside to shoot baskets and play soccer. I heard crying at one point, but Brandon told me she hit her head on her own, as she ran into something outside. I made sure it wasn’t inflicted by Brandon, but I could tell by her cry and lack of whining about Brandon, that it was self-inflicted. Soon, they came in right as Dave came home. We got them dinner, then headed to the club. We dropped the kids off at the kids’ club, while we headed to “Bourbon and Bubbles”. There were samples of different bourbons and sparkling wines/champagnes. I stuck to the cheese and crackers, and a few sips of champagne. Dave went straight for the bourbon. We lasted about an hour before returning to get the kids. We saw an infant in there, and Peyton was trying to touch it in the stroller. The kids club attendant told us she was probably just trying to steal the baby’s ball, but it seemed to have pretty tight grip on it. We headed home for showers and more reading before bedtime. Tomorrow, the week will resume! Here are the photos…
