Holiday Frenzy

This morning, Peyton woke up to pee at her normal time, 645 am, and then came in to cuddle.  I was hoping to “snooze” while she laid still, which she did for about 15 minutes before she returned to her room.  We were going to a volunteer event for my work, so I wanted to make sure she was up and ready.  I went to check on her, and expected to see her playing on the ground.  Instead, she was lying back in her bed, while reading a book, snuggled under the covers.  She was on her back, with the book straight above her.  She had “Daddy’s blanket” right nearby, tucked in with her.  She is loving her some Snoopy/Peanuts comic books that were given to us by our old neighbor.  It’s just pieces of comic strips in a book, and she likes Snoopy the best.  She’s even been saying “Good Grief” when she gets upset.  We headed out by 815 am to try to arrive by 845 am.  We arrived when the Chief of our medical center did, and I introduced Peyton.  She did not respond, but the chief got it, and knew most kids don’t talk to strangers right off the bat.  All the kp volunteers, about 15 of us, were gathered in one area.  I think Peyton was surprised Mary knew her name!  We were given an assignment to sort a HUGE pile of toys.  Some were also asked to take toys out of cars, but I didn’t want Peyton anywhere near the cars that were driving into the warehouse to drop toys off.  She did a great job, sorting all the tags into one hundred increments and finding their respective carts to load.  She also helped put the toys without tags onto the “NO TAG” cart.  She took her job seriously, and was good about always coming back.  There were a few times I lost her, and I was worried, but luckily, she was in bright pink, so I could find her easily.  I was worried she’d get smooshed in between two carts if she wasn’t careful.  Or run over by one of them, as there were other kids who were pushing carts back and forth.  I did panic a little bit as it got much more crowded, and she’d taken off to find another cart to put toys in.  She was pretty amazed to know that for some kids it would be their only Christmas gift.  We wrapped up our two hours, and then took a group photo together (we wiped out that whole huge pile along with 50 other volunteers or so…maybe more).

We headed out, and then she asked for a snack. I gave her the bar I brought with me, but didn’t have time to give her since we were working all the whole time.  We had lunch, while the boys were still out practicing basketball and doing errands.  Brandon has to get a secret Santa gift, and he selected Bella of all people!  He wanted to get a small basketball, which was on her list of 3-4 items, she’d written.  He’s worried she might not make it for the gift exchange, since she hadn’t been in school recently.  (Her mom’s in China teaching English this year, so she’s been out a lot going to visit, etc).  I told him even if she wasn’t there, she needed a gift.  Peyton went down for a nap, since we knew we’d have a long ahead of us, even though it’d been quite long thus far.  We (I slept with her) slept for 2 hours before my alarm went off.  I’d gone to sleep early, too, yet still was able to nap.  We got up and headed out for Misha’s birthday party.  We arrived and found parking, though not easily.  Peyton put her skates on, but wouldn’t wear her helmet.  No one else had one.  There were some on the big outdoor rink, but no one in the immediate party area inside had one, so she didn’t want to be the only one.  I was adamant, since I wasn’t going out on the ice with her that she wouldn’t go unless she wore the helmet.  Finally, she agreed, after kicking and screaming (literally).  Once she had it on, she didn’t even notice.  She was fearless!  She went out and hugged the railing, but then got daring, and started skating in the middle on her own!   I was super proud of her motivation, and I asked her if she wanted me to go out with her.  Sydney’s mom was out with her, too, so I guess Peyton didn’t mind.  I’d brought ski clothes for her, but no one else had that, so I left it alone.  Unfortunately, she was soaked by the time she’d been out there long enough.  She did agree to her mittens, so at least she was covered there.  I finally got skates on, and was able to do a few laps with her before getting called for cake and singing.  My mom was coming to get Peyton early to take her to my dad’s party, since I was headed back to Dave’s.  Peyton didn’t want to leave!  Here’s the first video.  And the second.  Sometimes, it seemed more like she just threw caution to the wind and hoped for the best.  She was having so much fun here.  After singing, she did say thank you to Sona and Misha, then we headed out.  My dad found parking, and I said a quick hello to Brandon.  They took off, while I headed back down to Dave .I changed in the parking lot then headed inside.  Luckily, it was empty there.  I found Dave and helped him set up the dessert table, and then enjoyed the evening with his work friends.  We’ll go pick up the kids bright and early tomorrow morning, since Brandon has basketball practice, pictures, and Peyton and I have Mary Poppins.  Never a dull moment!
