Different Day, Different Kid

Today, I got the kids before piano as I normally do. Brandon was in a cheerful mood, and I told him the day’s schedule. I told him I had to get my tires rotated after piano, and he was looking forward to it. I told both that they would do their reading in the place. For Peyton, she was going to call my dad’s tenant to ask for an order of cookies after we’d done our errands. Piano went smoothly; I was so tired, I was falling asleep. After a quick nap, we headed out to the tire place. Brandon asked me how he did with piano. I told him they both did a good job with it. He seemed satisfied. We got to the tire place ahead of my appointment time. Both took their books and headed for a stool. After I checked in, I asked them to join me on the regular chairs, but kept them separated. They were separated by a man on the stools, so they didn’t bother each other. We ended up waiting the 30 minutes I was expecting and another 10. The last ten minutes, both were getting antsy. I showed Peyton my car up on the lift, and she got a kick out of seeing it. Finally, the car was driven out of the bay, and we all got in to go across the street for dinner. Dave was going to tonight’s parent ed night then the coach’s appreciation dinner, so he was counted out. The kids were excited to go to dinner out, and both were behaving. I had given my dad’s tenant a heads’ up about when I’d be calling, so he answered right away, unlike last Tuesday. I put him on speaker phone and Peyton went right into action. “Hi, this is Peyton, would you like to buy girl scout cookies from me?” (LOTS OF WORDS!) He said, “Yes,” and then asked if he should buy from my dad. Then, Peyton said, “No, you can order from me.” She proceeded to take his order, and even described the cookies he was trying to order. He’d ordered five boxes, so she told him, “You get a free bag and a raffle ticket because you bought five boxes!” She even told him, “We’ll see you next Wednesday.” I was prompting her and whispering, but she wasn’t as shy as she normally is. After he was done talking to her, he chatted with me a little before we hung up. Peyton looked relieved when she was done with the call. Actually, half way through the conversation, she clicked off the phone with her (chubby) cheek. We had to call him back, but she even explained that she accidentally hung up on him. So, she made the sale! She even told me, “I talked more than I usually do.” I asked her why, and she said, “Because I like to talk on the phone. I talk more on the phone than in general.” (yes, she said “in general”!) We had a nice dinner, and each kid ate their salads, chicken, soup, muffins and ice cream. We left just after 6 pm (I can’t believe how much we can get done when I leave early!) and were home by 630 pm, as we hit traffic. Brandon was in bed by 7 pm, as he was tired from working late last night. Peyton is still up, doing her homework packet ahead of schedule. It’s a bit lengthy, but then she won’t have to worry about it the rest of next week since it’s due after the break. Today was a better day! Oh, and I received an invitation from the principal, addressed to me alone, inviting me to attend a breakfast celebration for our reading program at school. She said she was allowed to bring 1-2 parent representatives with her. I’d already bought the $50 ticket, so we’ll see what she says; if I can get it reimbursed or not. But I did write back to thank her for the invitation. The leadership team is actually all planning to attend, so I was thinking safety in numbers. Meeting with the principal is still quite scary for me; always has been. Always will be!
Finally, here’s a video from Kathy, from Kira’s 1st birthday. I love seeing all the baby faces in this!
