Hanging In

Yesterday, I thought I was having an allergy attack, with runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes. It started after walking in the breezy windy on Wednesday .I took a Claritin that Bonnie thankfully had, but it made me a bit sleepy. I tried to counteract the effects with coffee, but my boss noticed I wasn’t feeling well. I made it until 2pm, then headed to get the kids. We went to piano as usual, then headed to the game. Dave was home already, and we set out for BART. Peyton and I fell asleep, while Brandon read his book along with the audio book from the library. So it didn’t captivate Peyton, but there was no arguing! We arrived for dinner, but Brandon and I weren’t hungry. We did manage to eat something, then headed on BART. We played around in the arena for a bit before finding our nosebleed seats. The kids didn’t complain at all! It was 90’s Throw back Thursday night, so I was in love with the music and Dave and I were playing name that tune. The kids were happy to see the DJ. When the game started, the kids were pretty into it. Both were watching the game intently, but by the second half, I could tell Peyton was fading. She kept asking when the game was over, when it was half-time, though she was entertained by the Irish dancers between the first and second quarters. She even noticed that they were all sitting in the section next to ours. By half time, our section was full, and it was really cramped sitting so close to other people, especially since I was still drippy and not feeling well by this point. We left at half time to walk around again, then made our way out. By this time, neither kid wanted to leave! Both wanted to go back and watch the end of the game. I think it was a stall tactic, since they know going home meant bedtime. It was a bit sketchier since it wasn’t as crowded, but we made the trek back to BART without incident. There were a few panhandlers who requested money or food, and by this time, Brandon was eating a healthy pick from KP! Dave wasn’t impressed with the food options last time, but now that KP is sponsoring the team, there was a salad cart. Peyton kept counting down the sign for the next train by saying, “5 more minutes til bedtime” (quoting the book we used to read Brandon every night). Brandon ate the rest of the salad in the car, while Peyton fell asleep again. While I was showering up, Dave came in to tell me that the home team won by the last shot, putting them up one point to win the game! The kids slept in this morning, and it was all I could do to get them up and at school, both for them AND me. It was a foregone conclusion that I was indeed sick and not just allergenic. Gone in a way, since I didn’t typically have allergies. I headed to work, too, since I needed to put in hours. Also my co-worker is off next week, and I needed to do the labs to make my week easier. By some miracle, I lasted about two hours, called out sick from lunch duty, and went to sleep for 2 hours before picking them up. Peyton had a fairly reasonable day, not 100%, but an A-. I told the kids no piano today, since I was sick and just wanted to lay down. Brandon had his empathy lesson today, and I made an example out of myself. That to show empathy would mean to take it easy on me and not fight, ask how I’m doing, and get themselves ready for swim. I went to sleep for another hour, while the kids did change, and were reading or playing quietly until my alarm went off. Peyton fell asleep in the car on the way to swim. Brandon said he had to go poop when we got there, so I let him out first, and slowly woke Peyton. She mentioned to me that she wished she was still in pre-school because they get to nap. Maybe she wasn’t teasing Marcus, but she was jealous! They practiced treading water, and both made it for 1.5 minutes, the testing for this summer’s water play! Peyton looked like a little dog in the water, but Brandon did fairly well. I think he’s just stronger and can hold himself more upright. Finally, we came home and they showered. Again, I told them to keep each other entertained, and that I was trying to sleep my symptoms away. I heard loud noises, like screaming, but it turns out they were daycare kids next door, because during the screaming, Peyton came in to quietly check on me to see if I was okay. She even came in to spoon me for awhile before going off to play again. Later, I heard a deeper voice, and Peyton told me Daddy was home. Phew! But he was taking Brandon to pitching lessons. Yes, he’s nuts. Brandon didn’t really want to go, since he said he was tired, but the lesson was already booked. I got up with Peyton to have her eat dinner and finish her homework from yesterday. She was to write four steps on how to do something. The first time, two weeks ago, she wrote about how to make lemonade, then last week was how to ski. This week she picked “How to Throw A Baseball”. Dave would be proud! When she finished, the boys had returned. As we were tucking them in, Peyton asked, “Are you going to see my softball game tomorrow, since you’re sick?” I told her I didn’t want to miss it, so I would try to make it. It’s early, and Dave has field prep, so we’ll see how it goes. Hot tea and honey is helping as is the rest!

Peyton was quite concerned that there were a lot of homeless people there at the game. She wondered where they slept, what they ate, and why they didn’t have money. I didn’t have the energy to answer her. oh, and she asked me today, “Do you believe in God?” On Good Friday. So strange she’d bring it up. Again, I copped out and told her I wasn’t feeling well. Didn’t want to get into it with her feeling like crap. As they were going to sleep, Dave was headed to the gym. Brandon said, “Daddy doesn’t really show empathy.” I wasn’t sure what he was talking about, but I asked, “How come?” Because Dave didn’t ask how I was, and comfort me like the kids did 🙂
