Phew, we made it

This morning, Peyton headed into our room by 630 am. I was afraid of sleeping past the time we needed to take off. Dave headed out with Brandon for coffee and batting practice. He was supposed to come back and be with Peyton, but she ended up wanting to walk to the middle school, even though we were going to walk. She insisted she was going to drive, but I knew that wasn’t going to happen. We got to the middle school to help set up food and decorations. We were given the task of greeter and check-in. Soon, the races started at 9 am. I saw some cars who didn’t make it down the track and needed a push. Suddenly, I was nervous for Peyton’s car! She raced in the 10th race, so she had some idea of when she’d go. She hung around Maddie for awhile, then some of her troop. Finally, it was her turn. She knew she’d have to go get her car and place it on the stand. No parents were allowed. We’d talked about how it was okay if she didn’t win. She was in good spirits, despite coming in third our of four. Set up:

The races were moving along faster than the organizers thought they would. Initially, we told them we had to leave by 1130 am, but we were almost all done by that time. We headed back out on foot to the park where the ball game was going on. It had just started, and we missed the first half of the inning. I sat in the shade with Coach Tom, while Peyton mostly stayed with me. At one point, I was texting Dave something, and then I looked up, and Brandon made a spectacular diving catch. He was playing right field, and the ball was popped up to right center. There were a bunch of outfielders, since it was an exhibition game. So, Brandon passed two other players – one girl Dave said didn’t even move, and was a blur on the move to catch it, then fall on his knees, almost laid out, with the ball in the glove. I looked up at the last minute, and asked Dave, who was staring in disbelief, “Who was THAT kid?” (Later, Coach Eric told Brandon, “Hey, nice catch out there today. That was the best catch I’ve seen all season long.” He told his son Tyler about the catch. This is the same coach who yelled at Brandon last year, and almost made him cry.) Brandon also had a successful bunt, which he wasn’t really allowed to do all season long. After baseball, Brandon was given a snack shack ticket, but he said he gave it away to a friend since he didn’t see anything he’d liked. It helped that he’d already eaten lunch, nachos, and egg and cheese crepe. We headed home as soon as possible, so Peyton could sleep. It was 130 pm, and I told her we weren’t going to V’s until after she slept. Of course, she told me she wasn’t going to go to sleep but she proceeded to head to her room and crawl under her blankets. Almost 90 minutes later, she came down stairs, still a bit grumpy. In that time, I’d washed three baskets of strawberries, then hulled them, and washed blueberries and blackberries. I’d also whipped up some cream to take along with them. We arrived at V’s house, and the kids got to the business of playing. There were tears from all three girls at some point, but we got through them. Brandon had legos he’d brought, but he ended up playing with the girls or the balls instead. We had snacks, and a nice dinner, including a cheese course and fruit that we brought. The kids were sufficiently full, not finishing up dessert. They went back to playing, and singing karaoke. We ended up staying until 8 pm, and we wrapped up our visit. Dave invited them over for us to return the hosting favor. I’d already planned to have them over, but now Dave was invested, too 🙂 We came home so Peyton could shower up, and then both were sent to bed. They have their tri tomorrow, so they needed to get good rest. I also have Selina’s baby shower and then Thuy’s birthday. Phew, I need a weekend to recover from my weekend. I have to sleep early tonight since there was no nap for me today.
