This morning started super early as Dave’s snoring woke me at 430 am. I couldn’t sleep again, so I checked my phone until my alarm went off. I worked for a couple of hours before taking an early lunch to go back to school for the band parents’ meeting. The music store staff was on hand to sell books and rent equipment, and the band lead mom was there to give us the rundown. The band director was also there and gave us a spiel about how band would work. I learned there were three clarinets enrolled in beginning band. I didn’t know the other two, but I knew Brandon would be one. After the meeting, I purchased my book and took off. I headed back to work, and I was about 20 minutes over. I finished up work and went back to get the kids. Brandon showed me six black dots on his hand. Brandon had told me yesterday he was to run a mile. He told me at pick up that he had and that’s what the dots were, lap markers. it took him 11 minutes and 22 seconds. He is to better that time through the year. I asked him if he thought he could get faster if it were cooler. He said, “Yes.” Grace finished in 10 minutes. She was involved in Girls on the Run last year, and I know she is a well-conditioned athlete as she plays competitive soccer. Maybe that will motivate Brandon. That’s about what he ran for the turkey trot. Piano was next up, right after school. Brandon did his homework, while Peyton was up. She did fine, and then they changed clothes and went right over to swim class. Our instructor was late by 5 minutes, but she made up almost 4 of them at the end of class. I was watching my phone like a hawk. We saw Josh and Christina there, so I hung out with Christina in the shade and chatted. Josh was by himself in the pool. The kids did decently, and I think enjoyed themselves in the pool with as hot as it was today. After swim, we headed home. Brandon showered up while Peyton changed into softball clothes. I felt bad for her to have her do so many things today, but the softball practice was added on last, after we’d already scheduled the other activities. Swim is hard because she is not at the pool on Fridays. I may need to move it to another day, especially after band starts. Peyton was the second girl at the park, after the coach and his daughter. Peyton wanted to warm up with me, but I told her to warm up with her coach. Then, Brandon took out his gear, and Coach was throwing around with him. He was more interested in baseball at the moment! He was instructing Brandon, too, and fixated on his left-handedness. He asked him if he liked to pitch, since more lefties are needed in baseball. He said he always had a hard time with lefty pitchers. Brandon said he liked to play first base. Later, Dave showed up and continued with Brandon, while Coach turned back to the girls. We were being kicked off the field early due to a mixed signal, so his main concern was to learn names. He went around the circle and tried to learn all the kids’ names. He told the girls that if they made a nice circle and moved from the lump that they were in, they would get to hit first. Peyton stood up and sat down right next to him. I thought she was going to sit ON him!
He challenged the girls to go around the circle to name names, but Peyton didn’t raise her hand. The first girl who could name all the names would be spared from having to run. But none of them did it. (Peyton later told me she wanted to run that’s why she didn’t raise her hand. She wanted to train for walk a thon) The girls all ran to the next field as a team. Peyton was chatting it up with some girls on the way back; they were walking by this point.
Brandon, Dave and I were all doing the same. We were trying to learn the parents’ names while we were at it. We were all going to go to dinner to have a pre-season get together. We ended up at a pizza place close to home. Brandon was concerned about staying out since he said, “But wait, I have more homework!”

We ordered sandwiches and salads, while the rest ordered pizza. Our order came out first, and Peyton was given her food. The other girls were staring at her saying, “Mmmm…that looks good, I wish I had my food, you’re so lucky!” Peyton sunk in her chair. Then Coach asked if she was going to share with him. She gave him her Peyton staredown! Yikes! I saw it from across the table, and I was waiting for her to break. She did not. The Coach just left her alone after that. I told him that she probably won’t talk back to him for awhile. He was hoping she didn’t “talk back”. I had to revise “talk TO” him. The girls all ate, then played video games in the back, until it was time to go. I left when another mom and girl did, as Dave had already taken Brandon home to do homework. She did say bye to Coach then.
We found out he was a PE coach for K through 8th graders, and had a daughter who was just starting college. The younger one was in 2nd grade. Most of the girls are older than Peyton. She may be the youngest on the team; there was another girl who was 2 months older. Peyton figured it out, too. But some of the parents are babies themselves. The coach told me that his sister graduated from UCLA, too (he saw my visor). She finished up way before my time is what I told him. He pegged my age based on graduation year, and then he suspected the couple who was sitting next to me were similar ages if not younger. The highlight of my dad was the 33 year old dad telling me that I didn’t look a day over 35 🙂 Yippee! There were some other parents who had college-age to high school aged kids, so quite a wide range. It’ll be a short season, but the girls bonded. Some of them were giving each other hugs as we were leaving. THAT would not happen if these girls were playing with the boys. Some of them, like Peyton, did, and obviously, they all switched over.
I got home with Peyton, and switched gears to Brandon. He was studying for a test for tomorrow, so he read that for his time, then he was going to shower up but I’d forgotten he’d done so after swimming. He reminded me! So, after brushing his teeth, he asked me if I could show him the clarinet. He didn’t want to have anything to do with the book earlier in the day, but he knew I’d bought the book. So, Peyton went to bed, while I took 10 minutes to show him how to put the clarinet together and take care of it. He was super interested! I showed him how to play five notes, and told him the names of the notes. He can read the music because of piano, so that helped. I then tested him, and he was able to return demonstration the same notes, going back and forth. I’d ask him how to play, and he found the keys. Then, I showed him my fingers, and he’d tell me the note! He knows note value, too, so he’s got most of the reading down. He was concerned about cleaning it and how to put it away. He was being careful, and really seemed into it. I told him of his responsibility to take care of the instrument. I think he may do just fine with it! Helps that during sectionals, he will only have 2 other people in his group. The information I’d brought him earlier that he dismissed, he was now interested, and read through it. He even asked if he could fold it up and put it inside the case, since it showed him how to assemble the pieces. So proud of him 🙂 since he’d shown interest in the clarinet and it was running late, we postponed piano practice for today. I did remind him we’ll resume tomorrow 🙂
