Tonight’s first of two BTSN’s threw our schedule off. We normally have piano for Brandon at 525 pm, but BTSN started at 545 pm, so I asked the piano teacher to switch. She agreed to take him at 245 pm, which meant I had to leave early from work, like a Thursday. I picked them up from class after stopping by CDC to tell them they wouldn’t be there. I picked up Peyton first, then rushed to get Brandon. She was wearing knee high socks. Brandon saw us and headed toward us. We went to piano, but Brandon was putting up a stink. He really doesn’t like changing routines, and he was concerned about the homework he had to do, knowing it was BTSN. After piano, I dropped him back off at school. The clarinet section has now increased to 4 players. One of my mommy friend’s daughter changed from flute to clarinet as there were a dozen or so flutists. They also had a clarinet from their older daughter, so they were all set. The section consists of two boys and two girls. I decided to stay as long as I was allowed by the teacher. Peyton was super quiet, and listened and watched nicely on my lap. I sat with the band mom that was organizing and staying to check people in. I know her from our reading group, so we whispered a bit, but I didn’t want to get kicked out, so I tried to just watch and not talk.
One girl is a fifth grader, and she said she’d been working on things since over the summer. When the teacher asked who of them had musical experience, and all four of them raised their hands. I was trying to get Brandon ahead of the curve by showing him finger patterns, but they already passed that in the first 10 minutes. The band teacher was blown away (pun intended) by the speed with which the kids picked up the instrument. She said she’s used to just working on the embouchure for the first class with most other kids and schools, but she moved on to actual songs and reading music. They started with just mouthpiece and barrel, then they progressed to playing songs, accompanied by her. They all knew their note value, and seemed to play together. At one point, they all had nearly the same tone, and it was kinda cool! The other band mom there and I smiled at each other in amazement! I told Brandon to behave because I knew the mom leader. He got frustrated and said, “Why do you always know the leaders?!” (I told him the same thing about drama since we knew the drama coach from baseball.)

He kept turning around and checking on me, and I’d give him the thumbs up. He was really trying and hanging in there. After the finished, the teacher wanted to take a picture of her clarinet section. She gathered them together, then dismissed them. I helped him clean it, as the teacher hadn’t reminded them to do so. Trumpets were coming in, so we quickly disassembled the instruments and headed out.
It was then that we were able to have a free moment to do homework. I complimented him on his effort, and he said he liked it better than piano!
Brandon oddly asked if he could borrow my bible. He saw me packing it up at my parents’ house, and he thumbed through it then. He asked today when he was going to be able to read it, and if I would give it to him. Sometimes, I really can’t figure him out. I wonder if it has anything to do with G though.
Peyton told me she’s been talking to the fourth grade girls. Their play structure is closer to her line up area, and though she’s not allowed there, she hangs out on the edge. She chatted with B and G, both girls that Brandon has been interested in the past. Peyton said, “Well, Brandon doesn’t want me to follow him, so I just talk to B and G.” I asked Brandon if they really talk to her, and Brandon said they do, along with some other fourth grade girls, and Peyton said, “Yeah, see?”
I dropped the kids off at cdc and then went to meet Dave in the multi. We got an intro from all the teachers, VP and principal. Then, we headed to the class, and learned more about the teacher. She went to Stanford, and got a Master’s, too. So, Brandon’s had teachers from Cal and Stanford in the last 5 years. She’s been teaching for two years here, and she definitely is spunky and energetic. The class has as lego theme, which is right up Brandon’s alley. I met up with the mom that I was going to read with for a few minutes while Dave went home with the kids. They’d already eaten dinner at cdc, and Peyton had already showered up, so it wasn’t as late of a night as it could have been. Seriously though, work is getting in the way of me being a mom. We have BTSN #2 tomorrow, and it’s my late day at work. We won’t be able to do homework until 7 pm 🙁 Hopefully he gets it done at cdc. Then we have another marathon Thursday. The week is going by too quickly. Already.
