Today, we had another marathon Thursday. I picked up the kids for Peyton’s piano. She did a great job today, despite crying as usual last Friday. She was determined though, and she got through just fine. After the lesson was over, Ms. M asked me if I would consider Peyton to be tested for CM. I didn’t know what that was, and the teacher asked if I’d ever done it when I was younger. She told me it was the Certificate of Merit, and that she’d have to get tested, then move to a different teacher. I was surprised. I asked, “You don’t want to be her teacher anymore?” She told me she was just a beginning piano teacher. She said, “Peyton is good. She has good timing, and good rhythm and posture.” I asked her if the teachers cost more, and she nodded big time. She didn’t know if the testing cost money, but she told me to think about it. It’s not in her interested to lose Peyton as a student. Easy money – she practices, she doesn’t give her trouble most of the time. Not like her brother! I wasn’t sure if Peyton could handle a rigorous piano situation. Plus, it’d be more work for me! I went to swim class still thinking about it. I was able to google more, and I got more information about it. For piano, there are 10 levels, usually completed by high school. The kids can start after age 5. The swim teacher was asking Peyton how piano was, and I mentioned what I’d just learned. I told her I never wanted the kids to be competitive at piano! I’d rather have them put more energy into sports. Swim went well; the kids really enjoy the long laps and the deeper pool. They are less inclined to stop in the middle and just stand up, since they can’t. It’s 5 feet deep. The swim coach told me that they did a good job this week with their freestyle. Their backstroke is getting better, too. We came home, and Peyton changed into softball clothes. Earlier this week, since Dave was ignoring me about sending a message to the coach about pitching, I asked Peyton to ask Daddy. She finally did on Wednesday night, and Dave sent off an email to the coach to inform him about Peyton’s desire to pitch. But that Peyton wouldn’t ask him directly. Dave sent me an email this morning from Coach who told us that Peyton would start the game! I felt sick just reading it, thinking of her starting. She was excited to go to practice, while Brandon was not. He was in some kind of funk today! He didn’t want to do anything! He did finally go to practice, but he wasn’t happy about it. Good thing he was wearing sunglasses. I dropped him off and stayed to talk to one of the moms for a bit, then headed to see what Peyton’s team was up to. Brandon was going until 7, while Peyton went until 6. When I got there, I was trying to hide, so she wouldn’t see me. She was waiting her turn to bat, then was at pitcher. Finally, they were rotating around batting stations, and I saw her with her bat above her waist, and I went over to keep her and her teammates safe. She grounded the bat, then I stayed with her while she was in that area behind the cage. Practice went until about 620 pm, and suddenly, Dave thought Brandon’s practice was over by 630 pm. I told him it was 7! As we were leaving, Coach mentioned again Peyton would go first. I asked him if he thought maybe it would be better for K to go first, then Peyton. He said if we thought so. He agreed she could pitch in the second inning.
So, I rushed back to Brandon. He was afraid of me leaving, since he was afraid of me not coming back. He’d never really been left at practice before, so he wasn’t used to it. I got back, and the team was still practicing, but Brandon came over to me with his bag all packed up. He was done with baseball as far as he was concerned. The other two players in his usual league were also sitting out while the other kids were on the field playing. Dave was livid, but he was trying to understand the situation better. I’d made Brandon go back, but he was still just sitting there, so Dave went to get him and take him home. Poor thing…it was like we weren’t there to watch out for him and he was abandoned. Dave was not happy about last game, too, as the DB sub coach put the three players from our league in “key” positions, like outfield, and bench positions. Even when the team was up by 15 runs. He’s still waiting to see what happens when the real coach is back. He wasn’t there at the end of practice, though he was there at the beginning. Brandon had it “good” when Dave coached. Now he’s out there on his own. We came home to dinner at the door from a food delivery service we were trying. The kids finished up their tasks, and it was lights out relatively late! 815 pm for them…but I don’t think either had trouble falling asleep.
When I told Peyton that she’d be going second, not first, she looked so relieved! She was much better off mentally, knowing she’d be in the second inning. Here goes nothing!
