I woke up this morning, and we went about “business as usual.” That meant playing the piano with both kids, then Dave took Peyton out to get breakfast for Brandon and me. Brandon stayed behind and did some work, then we all ate quickly. We left for Peyton’s game at 930 am to arrive at the field by 10 am, with some time to get there to warm Peyton up on our own. But, as we were driving, I checked our website, and it was game start at 12 pm, and arrival by 11 am. So we were an hour early. (And it wasn’t even daylight savings!!) So, we got gas, got some more food for later, and hung out inside before heading over. We beat our coach and other girls there by a long shot. We weren’t sure which field we were on, so we just waited for the home team to arrive. We waited in the comfort of shade, while Peyton practiced pitching to Dave. Once our coach got there, and then the other team, we headed to the field. It was already near 90 by that time, and only getting hotter. Brandon and I sought shelter under the umbrellas we’d brought but the girls were out there. Coach wanted to cancel or reschedule, but he didn’t get any takers from our team. No one responded that we wanted it canceled. We all stuck it out, and we brought a 2.5 gallon jug of iced water. The girls lined up to bat in order of arrival. That meant that Peyton was up first!
She started with the kid pitcher, but she wasn’t getting any good looks. Then, Dave came in. Still with the excitement and big lefty wave (1:39)!
Dave got two strikes on her, then she was able to hit it!
The second time, she was more mellow about Dave coming in to pitch.
Our first inning catcher went out with a tummy ache, which was only relieved by a water break and taking off the gear. We had a smaller team today, only 6 girls by the time it was all said and done. Peyton played short stop for the first inning, then pitcher for the second inning, as we knew she would. She had practiced with the mask, which is required for all the pitchers. She threw a strike when she warmed up, but otherwise, she wasn’t able to get it across the plate.
Slow mo…on a practice pitch:
She got some in a good line, but they didn’t cross over the plate. I think they were practicing too short, and Dave said it was because last week, the rubber was moved up a bit.
first batter, second half…

The other coach came in quite a bit, but Peyton took it in stride, like a champ. She didn’t let it bother her, and she did a great job her first time out there. It was super hot by then, and she was all pink after coming in from the field. The girls played just over an hour, and the game was called. There was no sense in going longer having to risk more heat exhaustion, and for us, we needed to get Brandon to his game, so we were okay with the early call of the game. I think they were only short by 10 minutes. We headed to Brandon’s game, and I dropped them off to take Peyton back home. Luckily, Brandon’s game was close by, so we came home to cool down. She changed out of her outfit into shorts and a t-shirt. She originally wanted to keep her uniform shirt on but changed her mind. She grabbed some things to do, a book, coloring book and pencils. We headed back to the game and there were few parents out in the stands. There were some in the shade and spread out behind the stands. We got cold water at home, and that helped a bit. Brandon was playing outfield, all three innings, and he did the best he could in the heat, too. He had two at-bats, with a solid hit the first time, and a walk the second at-bat.
We wrapped up the game after time was called, 1.5 hours after the game started, and we headed back home. We all showered up, and then we headed out for dinner. It was a no-fuss dinner, trying out a new place for the first time. We had Mongolian BBQ for the first time that the kids can remember. They’d been before, but we haven’t eaten it lately, so I think they’d forgotten. Maybe Peyton’s never been. She enjoyed her meal, and Brandon ate two big helpings! dave thinks he ate more than he did. He certainly earned it with today’s activity. We headed to groceries since we haven’t gotten them for the week. Dave and Brandon went to get an A’s hat for P for their baseball game later this week, while Peyton came with me to get groceries to pick out her yogurt flavors. They found us as we were checking out, and we headed back to the car. Brandon, who can’t wait for anything, told me, “We got you a Warriors mug!” I was surprised, then Dave told him he should at least wait to give it to me. We got to the trunk to put the groceries away, and it was a coffee traveler, with the 2015 Championship logo on it. Dave told me, “Brandon said he wanted to get it for you!” I gave him a big hug, and thanked him for it. We came back for dessert that Peyton had brought home to me earlier in the morning with the breakfast/coffee run. The kids stayed up a bit longer, since it was still early, then they headed to bed. They have camp day tomorrow as it’s staff development day for the teachers.
Here is our selfie stick family portrait. We had to take an awkward shot to include the cake, but the other one looks better…
