Hot Chocolate Run

This morning, my alarm was set for 545 am. After brushing my teeth, I woke Brandon, and soon Peyton came in to go potty. We left by 6 am to drive to SFSU where we would get on the shuttle. We had to wait a bit as they were taking 5K’ers first, then 15K’ers in order. We took the shuttle for a quick 15 minute ride into the GG park. There were lines all over for bag check as well as potty. We needed both. So we did the potty first, then I packed my sweatshirt. Brandon wanted to hang onto his puffy sweatshirt. He was wearing all bright colors, and he told me my orange wasn’t bright enough. We walked our way to the corrals, and we ducked into ours with a minute to spare! We were in the second fastest corral, H, with corrals starting from G through O. After 3 minutes, our corral was starting. I had time to take a selfie, but Brandon told me to hurry up and put my phone away. He was worried about our own start. We started holding hands since it was so crowded, and when the crowd thinned a bit, we were able to run side by side. He did well the first 3/4 of a mile before telling me he was tired. We’d been following the 11 minute pacer, but I realized she was the pacer for the group ahead of us, as we were doing a 10:30 mile or so, which was the time submitted for us to start in our corral. He had an ipod shuffle, and I was plugged in, too. I ignored him, as it was too soon for him to complain. There was a water station around 1.5 miles in, and he stopped for that. I let him stop for marshmallows, chocolate and of course, water. We saw Peyton and Dave two miles in. He’d already dumped his iPod to me, took off his scarf and took off his sweatshirt.  I think he wanted to stop when he saw them! He was complaining about something about her not having to do this. Again, there was talking, but I wasn’t hearing it. There was an out and back section from miles 4-6, and a friend from high school saw us while she had turned around. It seemed forever when it was our turn to turn around. Brandon kept telling me he was going to cut across and cheat. We did manage to finally turn around, and then it was 5K more. We ran back into the park, and I was starting to feel tired by this time. Suddenly, I heard, “MOMMY!” It’s like a mommy Empire penguin being able to hear the cries of her young. Even through my earphones, I heard it. I couldn’t hear his complaining, but I turned to see Peyton by herself along the route. It took me awhile, but I looked further up to see Dave. I ran up to her to give her a personal high five. I forgot to give her Brandon’s sweatshirt, which was better, since it was a bit cool after we stopped running. I think seeing them again, Brandon wanted to check out and go home with them. The last mile was all uphill, so I walked with him. It flatted out after the 9th mile, and with 0.3 miles left, we ran the rest of the way. He vowed he’d never do another race with me, and he wasn’t doing walk a thon. He was happy to get the hot chocolate and fondue that was in the mug that we were given, along with chocolate batons, rice crispy treat, pretzels, and a banana. We drank our chocolate before returning to the shuttle. He was complaining about the shuttle, but I told him it was our way home. He had to go #2, so I asked if he could go on the bus, which was behind the mini shuttle. He was good after that, then proceeded to finish off his goodies. (He used my nap wipe that was given in our chocolate mug). We met Peyton and Dave right at our stop, and then we had to walk a bit further to get back to the car. Dave had taken Peyton out for breakfast, and while seeing us twice, they’d walked all around. She wanted to walk further toward the start line, but Dave wasn’t sure how long or where that was going to be. We drove home, and I let Brandon out first. He hobbled in to the house, and said, “Runners first, other people second.” We showered up, while Peyton went to burn off some energy by shooting some baskets. We hung out the rest of the afternoon before going to eat an early dinner. Like 430 pm. We did get in a grocery trip in before getting the kids in to bed by 7 pm. phew!
