Earlier in the week, Brandon’s class went to an assembly on Autism. This is autism awareness month, and Brandon came away a “changed man”. There is a boy with autism in his class. I’m not sure what functional capacity he is, but I am able to have a conversation with us, though he does some strange things in class which can often be disruptive. Brandon told me he now sits across from him and helps him out with organizational stuff (which is hard to believe since he can’t keep his own stuff straight).
He told me he also helps him pick stuff up, and get from place to place. He also told me there is one kid that has ADHD in the class. Brandon tells me that’s why the kid always has messy hair. He didn’t know if the kid was medicated, but he said he often can’t stay still. Great that the school is taking part in making all the kids aware of other kids around them, and how differences can be celebrated.
