Tuesday, Peyton went to practice. She hadn’t brought a water bottle to school (no thanks to Dave), and then complained about a headache when I picked her up. She was still excited to go to practice. Dave took her first, while I picked up Brandon from a later band. He came home and practiced piano, then we headed to the field to watch Peyton play. It was warm, and though she had a water bottle then, she was starting to slow down. She looked like she was melting! I had a PTA meeting, so I left for that, while Dave took the kids home to eat and shower up. I got home after 9 pm, and I had a mom instinct to check on Peyton. She was still complaining about a headache when they got home from the game. I went in to check on her, and she had heat emanating off of her! I grabbed the thermometer and had her check. It was 103.8 ! I grabbed the Tylenol and gave her a dose. I then brought her back to my bed to make sure she was okay. None of us slept the rest of the night, as she tossed and turned. She felt chills but was still burning up. When I got up at 5 am, I took her temp again. It was still 101 or 102, so I knew she wasn’t going anywhere to school on Wednesday. Brandon had a fourth grade mission trip, and Dave was already signed up to chaperone. I was out for Wednesday. I emailed all my contacts and called into the sick line. I emailed the teacher to let her know. I even set up an appointment for our pedi because I was worried about heat related illness since it was so hot. The appointment was for 945 am, so I kept snoozing the alarm I’d set. I heard the boys take off for school at the usual time. I was worried for them, too, as G was going without her dad. Dave was the surrogate dad, holding her motion sickness medication for her. I was acting as an intermediary between her mom and Dave, while coordinating care for Peyton. The pedi checked her out, and said it was probably a random virus. It wasn’t related to heat, and she had suggested when playing out in the sun, she was okay with Gatorade. This was exciting news for Peyton! We went home and she worked on her online programs both reading and math before taking a nap. I needed one, too, since i’d not slept well the night before. While we slept, this time with her in her own room, the boys came home. She got up and practiced piano, too. I left with Brandon to piano, while Dave took Peyton, along with her book, to practice for Brandon’s team. I brought him there after, and I took Peyton back home. Everyone went to sleep by 8 pm, which is still later than they should have been awake. Peyton still had a low grade fever, so Dave was going to keep her Thursday. He let her watch tv when he put a conference call in to work. I went to work early this morning, and had a bunch of driving around to do. Since I missed Wednesday, I had a lot of work waiting for me. I started at 6 am, and didn’t leave until just about 4 pm, and forgot to clock out for a lunch. Meanwhile, Peyton had had enough of sitting around home. She wanted to go to softball practice, even though I’d emailed the coach that she was not feeling well. They were out there by 405 pm, while I went to get Brandon. Meanwhile, Dave was heading back to the park alone, as he left Peyton at softball practice. I came home quickly, and I had Brandon change into pants. He was opposed, but he was not going to band in shorts. I went back to get Peyton, while Brandon waited about an hour for a ride to band. He was able to watch a bit of his game, which started at 530 pm. His ride was coming in at 545 pm; he was to be back at school by 6 pm. It was a mom who was also on the baseball team, and whose son would be missing out on the game, too. Peyton and I left the park at 6 pm, and we were back at school by 615 pm, not enough time to get a good seat, but we got an aisle. Dave wasn’t going to make the game at all, so it was up to us to represent. I made sure he saw me. During band, I received an email from the vice principal. She was recounting a discussion she had with Brandon and another student who were disagreeing on things. Among other things, the other student felt Brandon was targeting him – like when they all play dodgeball, while teachers have reported that the other student was spreading rumors about Brandon. Then, there was an incident that had happened with Peyton and this other kid’s younger brother, and the two older boys were having words about this, too. Brandon was upset that the other kid’s brother threw a chair at Peyton last year in class. (We think he just brought it up as fodder, since he dishes it out to Peyton, too, but who knows. I’d like to think when it comes down to it, he knows he needs to protect his sister. But really, it probably just adds to his list of things against the kid). While we were at home, we talked to him about this. We asked him to stay away from the other kid otherwise he would be going to lunch bunch. So, we asked him specifically how Peyton came into the conversation. Brandon said the other kid said Peyton was a bully, too. Brandon challenged him and said, “Why is my sister a bully, when your brother threw a chair at her?” The kid had nothing to say, and Brandon said the kid started to cry. Touche, Brandon, touche. I asked Brandon what interaction this kid had with Peyton. I asked if the kid plays four square with Peyton. Brandon said, “Yes, he plays.” I asked him if Peyton gets him out. Brandon said, “Yes, she does. She gets people out, too, I’ve seen her!” He sounded proud of his sister. Regarding dodgeball, this other kid isn’t super athletic, while Brandon plays baseball over half his free time during the day. The kid complained that Brandon would hit him hard with the ball. The VP got out of the kid that he endorsed Brandon threw hard at everyone. “The other student shared with me that Brandon does not throw the ball at him every time, but he does seem to throw it at him often. I asked him if he paid attention to how often Brandon threw the ball at other students, and the student admitted that he did not. I asked the other student if it was possible that it felt like Brandon threw it at him every time, even if he didn’t, and he agreed that this was possible. I asked the other student how he knew that Brandon threw the ball hard. He shared that his throw is harder than other students’ throws. But even the teacher asked him to back away from me, as it wasn’t the time nor place for him to talk to me. We were meeting with the teacher for a parent teacher conference, and he happened to come back in the classroom to get something. It doesn’t help that he and Brandon sit across from each other and play a malicious game of footsies. The kid has also pushed Brandon in anticipation that Brandon would do something to him. Brandon brushed it off, saying that it wasn’t hard. The kid is bigger than Brandon, too! He also admitted to speaking poorly of Brandon, again, not a bother to Brandon, but other teachers reported it happening. Luckily, Brandon never did anything to him outside of the dodgeball PE arena. He’s got less than a month to go!
The rest of the concert went well, and we met Dave at home. The teams tied, again! The kids didn’t get to bed until after 9 pm. SO LATE! And we have to be back at school by 730 am for the last band performance in front of the school.
