Serious talk

While I was driving the kids home today after school activities, I wanted to talk to them about a possible situation coming up for Peyton’s softball team.  She has to be careful since she’s the youngest on the team and needs to watch her attitude and know her place in space and on the team. Some kids still don’t have good bat control and aren’t aware of their surroundings.  So, I started my speech out with, “I have something very serious to tell you.”  Peyton blurted out, “Did Daddy die?”   Uh, NOT where I was going with that conversation!!  So I was quick to say no.  And then quickly got on with my topic of conversation which suddenly didn’t feel so serious.

Basketball recap:

Friday, the girls coed team had a 90 minute practice.  Saturday, they had their Rec game at 4. Brandon had has game at 3. So dave took him to our local middle school.  The Yins came to get Peyton and me to take us to the girls game across town.  Dave and Brandon joined after their game. Peyton’s team was up by 10 points by then.  Peyton and H were told to pass only. They were given challenges to pass and move the ball to those who didn’t get a basket yet.  Once they got a basket, they could shoot again until they scored and another challenge was issued. Peyton decided to go rogue and started shooting when she wasn’t supposed to.  She had a few wide open looks and then put it up.  She was to work on the jump stop.  She did have a pass to one of the girls, but it was too hard.  She looked back at her coaches with “the look”.  At least she tried.  Dave’s next challenge for her in the Rec league is to dribble behind her back. She’s got the cross over going already.  After Peyton shot, dave looked like he had sucked on a lemon.  Ryan mouthed “I will pull you out.”  Tricia was watching Ryan. I was watching dave.  I knew it’d be a long ride to SF.

The next game was in the city. Dave drove us up to the city while we took H and her dad.  Tricia and the older girls had their own basketball schedules to keep back at home.  Ryan told the girls there were no challenges in the next game. When we arrived, the families were so happy to see us. The team was playing on a full length college court. There were supposed to be 12 kids but they only had 8.  They were gassed and couldn’t move the ball past the half court line before it was stolen.  They didn’t have strong ball handlers.  Initially, they had Peyton, H and their friend D on the starting five.  But it wasn’t working out well, so they changed it up to sub D out for J.  With the three of them, they were able to score. Peyton had 4 points out of 10 for the team.  The other team ended with 16.  They hung in there at least.  They got tshirts for participating and took a team photo.
