Free Day

We didn’t have any practices or games or any other activities today. We started our morning springing forward, but we didn’t change the kids’ clocks, so we got to “sleep” in until 8 something. We didn’t really get moving until after 9 am. I practiced piano with Peyton, while Brandon made his own oatmeal for breakfast. Dave wanted to go for a bike ride, so he got us all set up to do so. We were going to our trail as we normally do, but there was a detour. Instead of riding around the detour as the sign suggested (Dave didn’t read it as I had), we went in a different direction. Instead of MTN, we went to DTLA. That meant we were riding on the actual street with REAL cars. It was a little frightening being on the open road so close to the cars with these little people. They did great getting to our breakfast spot on the corner. I wanted to ride to DTLA, but that meant another 1.5 miles there, and almost 5 miles back. We told the kids if they wanted to get ice cream, they had to ride out and back. Both agreed! Dave and I enjoyed a treat from the bread store (coffee and a pastry) instead of ice cream.

I just mapped our circuitous route, and it was 14.2 miles. Poor Peyton was on the smallest bike of all of us, and at times, she looked like she was a bear in a circus. She has gears, but they were not enough for her. We kept them separated for the most part, and there was only one minor crash as Brandon was slowing to a stop, then bailed at the corner of the street two blocks from home. He came to rest on Peyton’s leg, which prompted a bit of outrage from her, but otherwise, we were unscathed. We hung out for the rest of the afternoon, but I think they were sufficiently tired out! I texted Michelle from DTLA, and they’d gone earlier in the morning for brunch! We should have coordinated; she had offered the kids to ride up and Ted would give us a ride home, but I think that ride is harder than our longer flat one. We’re all geared up for our new week, with more daylight now and nice weather!
