Kids

Peyton has a bit of a runny/stuffy nose these days, and she put her finger up there and said, “I have boogies.”  I said, “Boogers?”  She stood corrected, and said, “Yes, boogers.”  I asked her if she wanted a tissue, and she said, “Yes, please.”
Peyton has been playing around, and mimicking us.  When we are serious, we say, “Look at my face,” and have stern looks on our faces.  She will tell Brandon, “Looka mah face,” and will give him a grouchy serious face.  Brandon told me this morning, “Mommy, she’s rolling her eyes at me.”  When I looked at her, she just had her eyes all the way up while her chin was pointing down.  It was a goofy face, but she wasn’t rolling her eyes.  I went upstairs, against my better judgment, to get Brandon’s toothbrush ready.  As soon as I left, I heard Peyton scream.  I ran downstairs to find Brandon with Peyton’s bowl by the sink.  I asked what happened.  Peyton said, “Bruddah took it away.”  Brandon said that she spilled it, which is why he had removed her bowl from the table.  He was trying to be helpful, I guess.
We went out to dinner midweek as Dave had to pick up Peyton before 5pm for her school’s open house.  He went to a restaurant nearby to get the early bird special.  It was not in a convenient place for me from my work, so it took me awhile to get there.  He had both kids, and had ordered for me!  When I got there, I had to ask the servers for my husband and two little kids.  They were just behind the hostess table behind a wall, so I couldn’t see them right away.  I got there, and both kids said, “MOMMY!”  Dave ordered them a kids fish dish and the server brought it already split.  They were so great – for one meal, they brought out two milks, split the dish evenly, and told us later they’d bring us ice cream for each.  We told them to wait because the kids had to eat more first.  Brandon didn’t want his cooked carrots while Peyton didn’t want her fish.  Of course, she did fine with her veggies, and Brandon did fine with his protein.  We told the kids when they finished their respective foods they could eat ice cream.  We had the server bring out the ice cream when we thought the kids were as done as they were going to be.  So, she brought it out and was about to set it in front of Brandon.  He reached up to grab it, and surprised her, almost causing her to drop it.  It caught her off guard.  I intercepted it, and put in front of me.  Brandon was upset, but not enough to touch the carrots.  I dug into the chocolate scoop in front of me.  He was sulking.  Peyton, sitting on Dave’s side, suddenly wised up and grabbed the fork in front of her and finished the rest of her protein.  Wow.  What this kid won’t do for ice cream!  I think this has been the case since she had the ice cream sundae on her birthday.  Dave gave her two small spoonfuls and tried to finish it all so she wouldn’t eat any more.  Brandon still never got any.  I ended up getting both kids on the way home.  Brandon was still mad at me, but wanted to come home with me.  Peyton, maybe gloating, said, “Mommy!” I said, “Yes, Peyton?”  She said, “I loooove ice keem.”  Hehe…Brandon had no response.
Brandon has been learning about health and nutrition.  He said, “When you hiccup, your heart stops beeping.”  I asked him, “Your heart beeps?  I think you mean, ‘Beat’.”

Peyton LOVES to sing.  She will cycle through all the nursery rhymes she knows, then moves on to Bruno Mars and Katy Perry.  Her newest song is “Let’s go outside, let’s go outside, have some fun! Have some fun!  Let’s go out-side. Let’s go out-side, have some fun.  Have some fun” (sung to the tune of Frere Jacques).
The teachers told me that she is really good with her fine motor skills.  They were playing with a key ring and a bunch of plastic keys.  Peyton had filled up 3 full key rings!  She was also working on threading pipe cleaners through buttons.  She’s really developed in her gross motor as well!  Today at gym, she was able to climb up on the ladder.  She wasn’t doing this as of last week.  She needed me to really help her last week, whereas now, I just have to spot her waist.  She wasn’t scared either when on the high beam, when the teacher had her do a forward roll on the beam.  Last session she did it once (really, she had no idea what the coach was doing to her), then wouldn’t do it again.  This time, she did as she was asked the first time, then didn’t have such a surprised look on her face (like last time).  At the second rotation around to the high beam, she knew exactly what to do, and didn’t even need the prompting to put her hands down.  It helped that the class was done to 2 students today.  She has also been practicing her gross motor skills with her dirty diapers.  The wet diapers we change in our room, and they get kicked down the stairs to the kitchen trash.  I’m usually holding her down the stairs, hence my kicking of the diapers.  Last week, I was holding her hand down the stairs, when she stopped in front of a diaper that had been changed overnight (a full one).  She squared up to it, looked down, concentrated, and gave it a kick.  She landed it solidly, and shot it down the stairs.  I couldn’t believe the contact she had made with it on her first attempt.  Dave swears she’s going to be the athlete of the two kids.  She is always the one interested in sports on TV, knows when they say, “Touchdown,” and will ask questions.  We should sign her up for soccer so she isn’t just a spectator for Brandon, but can be a participant.
Finally, my mom was in town tonight.  We wanted to go out on our own, so we took the opportunity.  We were rushed to get ready, and I didn’t have much time.  So I took out the rubber band in my hair while trying to get the kids their dinner.  I fluffed up my hair a bit, then Brandon looked up and said, “Hmm, pretty!”  So thoughtful (and funny that he even noticed)!
We had a nice dinner, and went shopping to get some party favors at Brandon’s favorite store.  Dave said he looked funny while carrying around a toy shopping bag while we didn’t have any kids.  Actually, it was more of a creepy look.  He was embarrassed because he saw one of the younger whipper-snapper kids that he plays pick up basketball with, and it was seriously hampering his “tough guy” image.  I don’t think he was spotted, at least that’s what I told him to make him feel better.  We got home and the kids were already asleep.  Peyton will have gone over 24 hours without mum-mum, her longest!  This is the beginning of the end.  Hopefully her immune system can hold up through the next few months.  On a good note, she is drinking more milk!
