CNY

Today was one of Brandon’s friend’s (Alex) last day at his school (he’s going to Chinese school).  I asked if he was sad.  He said, “Yeah, he’s been my best friend for like 5 days!”  It’s probably true, since Joshua’s birthday party.  We didn’t even invite him to Brandon’s party, but since Joshua’s party, he’s been wanting to un-invite Joshua, and invite Alex. In honor of Alex’s last day, his parents brought in a cake.  The teachers told Dave that they were giving the “hyper” kids a smaller piece of cake.  Needless to say, Brandon received a smaller piece of cake (it was an ice cream cake), and the teacher was met with a frown by Sad Brandon.  Dave didn’t really think it was fair, but I am all for giving all the kids a smaller piece.  No one needs that much sugar, especially these little 4-5 year olds.  Glad they’ve figured out Brandon does better with less sugar.  Besides, I tell him he’s sweet enough without all that extra sugar.  He doesn’t buy it.  There was an article in TIME and as soon as Peyton saw the picture, she said, “Peyton crying.”  It did look like a shirt she has.
Anyhow, Dave and I had both read it independent of one another.  I was worried Brandon would be a statistic, given he doesn’t understand the concept of delayed gratification.  Dave had heard of a study conducted where kids were offered 1 cookie right now or 5 cookies after waiting X amount of time.  Those kids that took the cookie now were more likely to have lower paying jobs after 20 years.  So at dinner tonight, we went out to celebrate CNY and “treat” Dave to Chinese food as a family of four.  They brought out shrimp chips while we ordered from the menu.  I decided to enroll Brandon in the study.  I offered him one chip now or 3 chips in 5 minutes.  He said, “I want one chip now and in 5 minutes.”  I repeated myself, “One now OR 3 chips in 5 minutes.”  He said, “I want 3 chips later.” So, I made note on my watch and gave him 5 minutes.  So, we ordered, and a few times, Brandon asked me, “Is it five minutes yet?”  He played quietly with his lego man, and had the chips in front of him.  He kept asking me, and finally I told him to not ask until I told him it was time.  He just looked up at me periodically, but kept quiet.  Finally, after our order was taken, and after 5 minutes and a little bit (since he hadn’t asked, I forgot to check), I told him he could eat them.  He started scarfing them down, and Dave told him to slow down and enjoy them.  During this time, Peyton had been given her first chip.  After she was done, I told her she had to wait to eat more with Brandon. Her way of asking for more was to point at them and say, “What’s this?”  I’d tell her and another minute would pass and she’d say, “What’s this called, Mommy?”  After Brandon was allowed to eat them, she got another two.  They were yummy as they had pieces of garlic mixed into the chip.
While on our way home, Brandon asked if we could have a bake sale at our house.  Dave asked him what he needed money for.  He said he didn’t know, but that he just wanted to do one.  Maybe he just wants the sweets.  Then “Chasing Cars” came on the radio while Peyton was singing “Miss Kristina’s here today” and cycling through her friends’ names.  Brandon asked her, “Is this your favorite song (referring to Chasing Cars)?”  Peyton said, “Yes.”  Brandon then responded, “Okay, then be quiet and listen to it.”  Funny.  Oh, and she didn’t stop singing.  Brandon just nicely asked us to turn up the volume since his sister wouldn’t stop singing.
After the one dose of acetaminophen, Peyton was brought back to life.  You can’t even tell she was down for the count just a few hours ago.  That means we get to go shopping tomorrow!!  Well, after I bring her in just to make sure her cough doesn’t develop into something worse.

While we were out, we ran into Kimthy, getting cream puffs.  There was a role reversal as Peyton was the friendly one, while Brandon hid behind my leg.  Dave said Peyton gave Koko a mean stare down, even after Koko had just gotten her cereal!  Maybe that was part of her not feeling well, but I doubt it.  Even after Dave was turning to leave, and they were telling her to say bye to him, she continued to stare down Koko.
Chopsticks-in the spirit of CNY, Brandon wanted to learn how to use chopsticks.  We had him practice on small pieces of shrimp chip while we waited for our food to arrive.  He kept missing his mouth, and the chip would fall on his lap.  I told him to pick it up and try it again.  I told him not to cheat and use his hands, even though I knew he wanted to eat the chip.  He tried and tried, and finally, he coordinated the chopsticks and his mouth and got it!  We tried a second time, and with help from Dave, he got better at it.  Peyton just watched the whole time, soaking it all in.  When the food arrived, there were lychees in our sweet and sour pork.  We put one on Peyton’s plate, and she grabbed her chopsticks.  She said, “I do it!”  She had this look of determination on her face (Dave calls it the “Mah eyebrows at work”), and took one chopstick and stabbed it right through the nut.  She tried to bring it to her mouth, but thought better of it, given it was probably the size of her mouth.  I asked her if I could cut it for her since it was too big.  She agreed, “Too big.  Cut in half?”  When I did it, she went back to trying to stab it with the chopstick.  It was easier for her to maneuver and once she got it in her mouth, she smiled and said, “I did it!”  Just like big brother.
