Mommy Day Care; Holy Molars!

Today, Dave had work, while I stayed home with the kids.  I wanted to keep them entertained, but my goal was to not use the TV.  Normally, they get to watch TV on the weekends, but today is not technically a weekend day.  And I wanted to be strong.  So, it started out as any usual day; Dave got out the door right after 7am, after feeding them breakfast.  I got them ready to go out, and let them play, because not many places are open at 8am.  I needed to go get milk, but other than that, had no agenda for the day.  We headed out right after 9am, to go to TJ’s for milk, cheese, and cereal – the staples of our lives.  Brandon walked with me, while Peyton rode in the cart.  I played “I Spy” with Brandon to have him help me get our normal cereal.  I had to speed things along as Peyton was getting antsy.  We all tried the warm cinnamon bread that was out for samples.  Brandon always looks forward to the samples.  We headed back home in less than 30 minutes.  We put the groceries away, then it was arts and crafts time.  I set out some paper that I had ripped out from my old spiral bound notebooks.  I got the crayons and then the novelty – shaped scissors.  I figure since they aren’t really sharp, Peyton could learn how to use scissors without missing digits after we were done.  Brandon went straight to work, constructing “Expedition Everest” a ride we saw in Florida last year.  It’s a thrill ride with a Yeti inside the mountain.  He didn’t go on it, but he watched while we did, so he had pretty good recall of the components – a train, a mountain, and of course, the Yeti.  Here is his picture:

He waited to show Dave when he got home, then he was okay for me to “recycle” it. Peyton needed a little help with her scissors, but wanted to do it on her own.  She was so happy when there were tiny bits of paper coming out of the scissors, “Look I make!!”  After the place looked like it had snowed, we cleaned up for lunch.  I cooked up some of the gnocchi that I had just got in the morning, and sliced up some avocado for Peyton (she pointed to it in the store, and I thought it sounded like a good idea for her).  She also asked for “salad” which was kind of strange; she sounded like a supermodel, watching her weight.  She ended up not really eating the bits of lettuce I had given her, but did like the gnocchi and avocado.  Brandon said, “I don’t wanna finish my lunch, I want to eat it after nap time.”  We’ve all not been getting much sleep at night; Peyton has been waking up screaming the last few nights, several times throughout the night.  It’s been a little rough.  I knew he was tired.  I asked him to finish his food, and after that, we’d all go upstairs for a nap.  We were all down by 12pm.  I told Brandon if he woke up first, and Peyton and I were still sleeping, he could go back to his room and play quietly.  I told him I’d go into his room as soon as I was awake, so I knew where to find him.  I told him if he did move from his room, and I got up to go look for him, I might think he was lost.  Peyton let out another scream about an hour into her nap, and I was sure Brandon would wake up.  She was able to fall back to sleep.  Soon, I heard him creeping around, but I pretended, and then did, go back to sleep.  When she woke up again, Brandon was sitting in my room.  It was kind of creepy, but I think he waited a long time for us.  It was 3pm!  So, we got up and had a snack – an orange and a cheese stick.  Then it was zingo time!  We played several games of this.  While we were playing, Peyton’s nose started to run.  I asked Brandon to get a tissue on our kitchen counter.  He ran over, grabbed one, came back and held it up to Peyton’s nose.  He said, “Okay, blow!  Blow, Peyton.”  He totally took care of it.  Until she blew so much out, it got a little messy and I took over.  He got up to wash his hands, then came back to join us.  Later, I think it left a big impression on Peyton.  She told me, “I haf a big bruddah.”  It was so sweet.  I’m glad the kids got to spend so much “down time” together.  We spent the rest of the afternoon with the crayons again, this time with some mazes, puzzles, and coloring books.  Peyton was enjoying writing in Brandon’s workbooks.  I had dinner on the table a little after 5pm, as the kids were both telling me they were hungry.  Dave came home shortly after, and both kids, who were at the dinner table, jumped up and said, “Daddy!”  I told him, “I missed you, but I did it!”  Peyton chimed in and said, “I miss you, Daddy.”

During the day yesterday, Brandon tried to convince Peyton to get under his blanket, like a fort.  She said, “No, I can’t breathe there.”  I was amazed she was able to say that.  And I don’t blame her; it was a dark blanket.
So back to Peyton waking up in the middle of the night.  This is our sleeper child normally, so I was figuring something is going on with her.  She is inconsolable when she does wake up.  Nothing I can say or do will help; she just cries it out for about 2-5 minutes, then goes back to sleep.  I decided to check her gums this afternoon.  When I did, I saw why!  The back molars on top had both broken through her gums.  Then I realized, the bottom ones were already in.  I’m not even sure when those happened.  I don’t think they were out at her last dental check up, as I had asked the dentist.  Poor second child – definitely not keeping up on the milestones.  Both teeth are right about half out, with the other surfaces in the back yet to pop through.  Dave went out to get more numbing stuff tonight, because he says, “I can’t handle it anymore at night.”  Poor Peyton.  We put the kids down around 730pm after our usual routine, including the 2 books, and though Dave said it was a bit early, neither kid, nor I, complained.  Both were out by 815pm.
