with his classmates. Today was Decki’s birthday, so a few of the classmates got together at Decki’s house to celebrate. The invitation said, “No gifts, please.” But how can you not bring something? So we got Decki a balloon with Lightnin’ McQueen and Mater and a Cars card, which, when opened, makes noise and Decki’s mom a tulip arrangement. Brandon was practicing saying, “Happy Birthday, Decki” in the car, then managed to get most of it out when he first saw him.
One look around the house, and it was evident why Decki’s parents insisted no gifts. They have a Thomas train table, geotrax, a swingset and sandbox outside, and a million other cars, trucks, and trains. The swingset was pretty crazy – it has a rock-climbing wall with a rope ladder, slide, three swings, and a canopied upper deck. Brandon saw the rock-climbing area and managed to climb all the way to the top on his first attempt. He needed a little spot at the top, just my hand to support his rump, but he made it. Sliding down the slide was another story. He went a little fast the first time, becoming airborne, his seat landing firmly on the tanbark. Later attempts, he changed his style and slowed himself down with his feet, casually easing to a stop. Brandon had a bit of trouble with the sandbox as he flipped a shovel-full of sand up into his face, getting some in his eye. He made matters worse by trying to rub his eye with sandy hands. It just became a big mess, eventually the tears flushed out the sand. He gave it up to have some fun elsewhere.

Since Decki has an older brother, there are mostly two of everything. Outside there were two easels, two lawnmower bubble makers, and two dumptrucks. There was an adult-sized backboard with at least 10 different basketballs, all different sizes, and a little hoop set up for the little guys to dunk. There were two girls at the party, Vanessa and Veronica, but most of the play centered around boy-themed things for Decki, Brandon, Neil and Caiden, Decki’s brother. It was supposed to be a light lunch, but there was so much food there! It was a good time to meet all the parents that we never have a chance to say more than “hi” or “bye” while dropping off and picking up the kids. It was the perfect day to enjoy the outdoors. There were bubbles set up, but Caiden was the only kid who could get any bubbles out. Brandon stuck the wand in his mouth, then proceeded to sit in a puddle of spilled bubble soap. It was cute though because he sat right next to Decki to blow bubbles side by side (he opted not to sit on the dry side, but boys will be boys). The party was supposed to be from 10-1130am, but Amy had not taken into consideration the time change, so the kids were just fine and not in need of a nap until later. So we stayed a little later, having time to enjoy a yummy lunch (Brandon got to drink juice!) and then the grand finale of CAKE! It was the cutest little Thomas cake, with a Thomas train on a little track in the middle of the cake. Of course Brandon wanted to see it and touch it and eat it. We all sang to Decki, who had the biggest smile looking at his cake. Cake and ice cream (two flavors) was served, and we left shortly after, saying goodbye to all of Brandon’s classmates. Decki is Brandon’s best friend at school, so hopefully we have a chance to do another playdate. NOt sure how it would be to have them both here, but I’m sure Brandon will want to go back to their house. I can only imagine that Decki’s parents would have to spend the rest of today cleaning up the mess made by 6 toddlers!
