Today, I went in to work at 7am to get started early since I knew I’d be taking an extended lunch for Brandon’s kindergarten orientation. Luckily, Julie was able to help out, but I was still frantic driving back and forth from work to school. I met up with Brandon and Dave to a sea of kids and their parents. Dave said that Miss Becky, Brandon’s teacher, told him that Brandon was a bit apprehensive about coming since no one else in his class was going. He’s in tune with what is going on around him.
There were people all over the front of the school. Seems that public school parents aren’t as well-behaved as private school parents. We were cut in front of at least two occasions by pushy parents, with their kids in tow. Really, this is just breeding more pushiness as the kids think it’s okay to do it. We lined up according to alphabet to get Brandon checked in with a name tag. Apparently, some parents cannot follow directions, either, as they were in the wrong lines, having to hop around and disrupt others who were patiently waiting in the proper areas. Definitely have to be proactive in this system. The numbers have come up a bit, as well, as they are now at 23 kids per class, up from 20 last year. Better than some other public schools, but higher than the private school system which is capped at 20. All the kids were dropped off in the playground area, while the parents were asked to sit on the blacktop for a presentation from the principal, other parents and PTA members. Brandon took off running to the structure to go play. He barely even looked back as he waved bye to us. He had no reservations in going to play with the other kids. Some parents lingered at the gate, while I didn’t want to have him see me watching him go.
It was exciting listening to all that we’d be involved with next year. It seemed to be diverse set of parents, more so than Brandon’s current school. I did get a bunch of vitamin D and a little tan sitting out there. We ran into Joanne, Willie’s wife, and Samantha! It was nice to see a friendly, familiar face. I don’t think she remembered me, since we’ve only met a few times at weddings and get togethers. After the presentation, we went to pick Brandon from the playground. He was on the monkey bars, and right next to Samantha! We saw some other kids who were laying around on the benches, looking pretty tired. The event started at 1pm, which is right during Brandon’s nap time. He didn’t look too delirious, but I did ask him what he did when we were gone. He said he had a partner, whose name was “Blank”. I thought maybe the kid didn’t have a name tag. Then I said, “Are you sure his name was ‘Blank’?” I asked him to describe the kid (thinking maybe he’d made an imaginary friend). I asked him what he looked like. Brandon said, “Ah, he had peach skin.” I asked him what color his hair was. He didn’t know, but then I asked, “Was it blonde, brown, black?” He said, “What’s blonde?” I asked if the kid’s hair was yellow. He said, “Yes.” Then I asked, “Was his name ‘BLAKE’?” He said, “Oh, Blake. Maybe.” Then he said he lost Blake. He didn’t know where he went because he didn’t follow him. Hard to tell what is truth and what is fiction. He said they listened to stories and drew pictures of their families. I think the teachers were seeing how the kids interact with one another and observe their social skills more than their academics. I was hoping Brandon would have a short nap before going, but Dave didn’t pick him up early enough.

The other day, at my dad’s house, I was downstairs, while Brandon was upstairs. Suddenly, I heard, “SQUIRREL!” Just like in the movie! Dave and I were laughing at his likeness to one of the dogs in the movie. I was thinking of that while the kids were being assessed. I wondered how he was doing with the other kids.
Finally tonight, we went to another free scoop day. The kids got a scoop of sorbet, while Dave and I ate one scoop of ice cream each. Brandon, Dave and I all finished about the same time. Brandon was nice and offered me a bite, and said, “Well, you can try it if you want to, but I already licked it.” Peyton was given her scoop in a cup with a spoon. She ate it over 30 minutes. No joke. She nicked the scoop with her spoon and methodically ate the rest of the scoop that way. Thoroughly enjoyed that. Dave and I couldn’t believe how slowly she ate it. Good thing it wasn’t too hot so that it didn’t melt by the time she was done. We did get a good walk in, as we were checking out the play structures scattered throughout the mall. Some were so intricate and looked like a lot of fun. They were going to be auctioned off. Dave only imagined one of those being put in our backyard.
