Epic

Yesterday was the mother of all days.  It started at 5am.  I got out the door in 15 minutes, headed to our neighborhood coffee place, which had opened 15 minutes beforehand, and got in and out of there in 3 minutes.  Before I had finished paying, coffee was in hand.  Of course, I didn’t feel like eating or drinking anything, but it was for later.  I set off on my 90 minute drive to my conference.  I arrived early, which I was hoping would be the case, so I didn’t feel so rushed.  The drive was nice, no traffic, and it’s been awhile since I just drove in the car.  There were many a solo rode trip up and down the state back in college, but that was some time ago now, too.
I was AV monitoring one of the rooms, so I stopped in to register myself, and picked up my supplies for the room.  I picked up a to go breakfast there, and headed to the room.  I had to set it up, and make sure all the equipment was working.  I sat down and ate breakfast.  I tried to call Dave to see what was going on at home, but he didn’t answer.  Finally, one guy walked into the room.  He was a younger guy, so I asked him if he was the first presenter.  Turns out he was another preceptor.  Ooops, my bad.  Consider it a compliment 🙂  .  We talked a bit of shop then coordinated our day.  We had 8 resident speakers, and it was going to be a busy morning.  I haven’t come back to this conference since I had been here many moons ago. The first speaker started right on time, and things went off without a hitch. Dave picked right at 8am to call back.  Luckily, the phone was on vibrate, and did not disrupt any of the conversation.  It was much better to be on this end than at the podium, but surprisingly the speakers were very well composed and confident. Helped that some of them were in their second years of doing this.  We ended our session and headed to lunch.  The moderator was from France, but was also Chinese, so it was a little weird asking him about home.  He said he ate Chinese food at home, but with French sauces.  Go figure.  I was picking his brain about France in case we ever decide to go back.  I told him we’d probably go back when the kids were a little older to appreciate it.  While eating lunch, I ran into the resident who was with my boss.  They had tried to look for me at my room, but I had already locked it up and headed to lunch.  It was good to see many faces of people whom I have not seen since being a student, resident or job applicant.  One person even mentioned, “Wow, it’s been a long time.”  Hmrph.  At least he remembered me.  I didn’t see many classmates or familiar colleagues, but there were many potential bosses there.  A little intimidating.  So the resident went to get ready for her talk, while the boss and I roamed around and chatted with him a bit.  It’s interesting what perspective he brings, especially when it’s a candid conversation.  We later ran into his boss, who is only a few years older than me.  I almost walked right past him, since he was dressed like Dave, when he normally wears a suit and tie.  We killed the next three hours going to several talks and then waited for our poor residents who had the last 2 spots of the afternoon.  The last resident didn’t even make it to the program!  Luckily, she had been drumming up business and recruited enough to fill our entire room.  After our session, I again tried call Dave to check in on things.  Again, no answer.  We had 30 minutes, where the residents were going back to change, and we all headed in separate directions.  Since I didn’t stay the night, I was a nomad, so I headed to the gift shop.  I normally don’t “travel for business” so I decided to get them something.  There were a couple of pop up books there, so I got them each one.  Since we were by the sea, there were sea-themed books.  Brandon got a shark book, while Peyton got a bunch of sea creatures.

We headed to dinner right on time.  Other parties from different sites within our company were already there.  This was an annual event to celebrate being done with the presentations, but since our talks went late, we were late to the celebration.  They put us right by the window, looking over the water.  We were able to watch the sunset, and enjoyed the Hawaiian-inspired cuisine.  We were eating with a vegetarian, so we had to order with her in mind, but did order meat, meat, meat as well.  We had an appetizer sampler with a crab cake, shrimp, and short rib.  Then we ordered BBQ ribs, and a veggie sushi roll.  The boss was teasing us because no one ordered any drinks.  I told him I was driving back home, so I was out, and the residents felt badly about drinking with boss.  Boss had one glass of red wine alone.  We all ordered entrees, and discussed summer plans.  We met up with a former resident, who had eaten dinner already, and whose group was taking off already.  Her boss was a bit “tame” and heading home for the night.  So she joined us while we ordered dessert, but since she’d had her own at her table, she ordered ice wine.  Now the boss had a drinking buddy.  He ordered an after dinner drink, and continued on with conversation.  Groups were leaving by now, but we all were enjoyed ourselves.  I was having fun hearing all the old pharmacy stories, and hearing some unsavory ones as well.  Told the boss that alcohol was like truth serum 🙂  We were talking about our kids, troubles with driving, the law, and accidents.  I was getting a little worried when the conversation turned to almost head-on collisions, knowing I’d have to drive back in the dark on windy curves.  But I didn’t want to miss out on any of the conversation, so I stuck it out.  We left a little after 10pm.  I texted Dave I was heading home before I even got to the car.  The plan was to let GPS navigate me home, while chatting with my mom (on bluetooth through the car).  That seemed to work, to keep me up.  That plus all the caffeine I had consumed throughout the day.  I had not once felt sleepy, even though the boss had admitted to feeling drowsy on several occasions through the talks.  I was driving back through the sleepy town, stopped at a stop sign, then suddenly saw blue and red flashing lights.  OMG this was not happening.  I clicked off mom, and prepared for the worst.  I was somewhat calm for the situation, being that the last time I was pulled over was in Missouri right before the freeway exit to Kenny’s house 12 years ago!  I had my wallet right on the seat next to me, hands on the wheel until I presented the license as requested.  Officer said, “You were going a little fast back there.  This road is a 25 mph zone.”  I meekly asked, “How fast was I going?”  He said, “I clocked you at 39mph and accelerating before I put the radar down.  Didn’t you see me there?”  I guess it didn’t feel fast since our street is 40mph.  But it was a sleepy little town.  And, I told him I did not see him there.  I had no idea where he came from, and I usually look for cops and spot them.   Then he said, “Where were you coming from?” I told him the conference and the name of the restaurant down the street.  I blabbered on, “It was a three day pharmacy conference, but I had only come down for today, and was leaving now to go back home. I was following the GPS so I didn’t realize what the speed limit was, as I was just trying to get home.” He asked, “Where is home?”  I told him the general area.  He said, “Where do you work?”  I gave him the full name of my workplace as requested.  He stepped toward the front of my car and then asked, “I know that restaurant, and those conferences, usually have alcohol there.  Did you have any alcohol?”  I said, “I’m not going to lie, there was alcohol there, but I did not drink any because I knew I’d have to drive home, and I have two little kids there at home.  I wouldn’t do that.”  He was calling in my license, and heard back from dispatch.  They repeated my full name, address and that I needed corrective lenses, while he studied my license.  I think he may have also seen the two carseats in the back, which corroborated my story about the little kids at home.  I was going to take them out earlier in case I had to drive people, but luckily, I left them in there.  He handed me my license back and said, “Have a safe drive back, good night.”  I was flabbergasted!  I headed out cautiously, and at the speed limit.  I called my mom back and explained what had happened.  I was driving the speed limit or less, and I told my mom I was going to get pulled over again for going too slow.  I finally pulled up to my garage, right before midnight.  19 hours later from when I first set out.  Even after I got home, I was too amped up to sleep, so I told Dave what had happened, too.  He had waited up for me.  I got him to tell me about his day with the kids.  He got Brandon to practice in time, had breakfast with Peyton, went to PT, and picked them both up just as planned.  Peyton was sad when he left her at school, but other than that, things were all good.  He even took them to Chinese food since he knows it’s not my favorite.  Both were in bed by 745pm, so he had it relatively easy after that.
Today, we’re getting ready for graduation, and our trip to “the park”.  Dave is finishing up a sorbet he’s making for our camping trip – ambitious.  It’s fruit, and no diary or nut to accommodate all the food restrictions. No rest for the weary!
