Today, I reviewed Brandon’s weekly report and saw he had some reds. He hasn’t had reds in awhile, so I asked him what he did. He said, “I said some bad words.” I dared asked, “Which ones?” He said, “D-U-M-B.” And I said, “Anything else?” He said, “B-U-T-T.” 1) I’m glad he didn’t say them out loud and 2) the boy can spell! Ugh…! Why not use his powers for good, not evil!!
This morning, Sean brought a hat to school, and Brandon took it away from him. He was playing with it and said he was going to wear it. I didn’t want to offend Sean’s dad, who was standing there with us, but I told Brandon, “Give the hat back to Sean, please.” Sean’s dad said, “It’s okay for you to try it, if it’s okay with your mom.” I shook my head and nodded for him to listen to what I say. I didn’t have a chance to explain why, again, not wanting to accuse Sean of having heebie jeebies, but still, we don’t share stuff. Later, at the school assembly, as with every Friday, he came back with a dirty hat. I asked him what he was doing with it, and he said he was told to give it to his teacher. We were walking back to the classroom, and bypassed it. We were heading into the office, and I wasn’t sure why. I made eye contact with his teacher, and she told me there was a case of lice in one of the kindergarten classrooms, so they were headed to the office for head check. Brandon handed her the hat that was found, and
she didn’t want to touch it either! She asked why he had, how he got it and what he was doing with it! Reluctantly, she took it from him. (I hadn’t wanted to touch it either). I told her about what had happened with Brandon earlier today with Sean. She said she was going to talk to the class about why they were in there after they got back to the classroom. I got goosebumps just thinking about it, and wanted to go home and decontaminate. I’m due for a 6 mile run tomorrow, but since that was probably unlikely, I decided to squeeze it in between the start of school until lunch time. That meant I had to get a move on! I did make it back in time, and checked in with the teacher who said that one child in Brandon’s class was found to have nits. If just nits, then only that child’s parent is notified. If lice, then the child is dismissed and a letter goes home to all the kids’ parents. More heebie jeebies…and I didn’t want to touch any of the kids! So, I brought Brandon back home after school, and immediately made him take his clothes off and take a bath. I didn’t want to scare him, but I told him that someone in his school had lice eggs. He told me that he’d talked about it in his class already. Then he said, “No, not someone in my school, K___ has lice eggs in her hair! She was talking about it!” Ugh…I hope he doesn’t get it. Luckily it’s not one of the kids he normally plays with.
