Hard Day

Today was a somber day for us.  Our neighbor, who we have lived across the street from for over 30 years, passed away of melanoma last week.  His memorial was this morning.  I dropped the kids off at school like any other day.  I’ve used the skin cancer as a lesson for Brandon.  He fights me to put sunscreen on his face daily.  My hands are too cold.  Even this morning he was whining about having to put it on.  I told him that if he didn’t want to put it on, then that was his choice.  But that I didn’t want Peyton to get cancer.  And that our neighbor had cancer and it went to his brain and he died.  I stopped talking.  Dave chimed in and said if you have cancer, the cure is to chop it off.  Peyton heard us and stayed still while I lathered her up in sunscreen.  She let me put it all over, not moving a muscle.  Brandon saw me ignoring him, and he put his spoon down, walked over to the pump on the counter, pumped some in his hand and lathered up.  If that’s what it takes, that’s what it takes.  Dave agreed to attend with me.  The memorial wasn’t until 10am, so Dave took the time to drop his car off for an oil change.  I picked him up and we went to breakfast.  We had to make it quick since we needed to head up.  We got there early, about 20 minutes.  My parents called asking me where we were.  They were waiting for us at home.  Knowing we were already down there, they left.  We walked across the street from the church to get some coffee for me.  Peyton woke up me at 3am saying that her bed was wet.  I got up and went to change things, but was tired as a result.  They were sampling coffee there, but it was too late as I’d already ordered a skinny mocha.  They even gave us a 1/2 bag of free coffee, and we took it, but really had nowhere to stash it.  Dave put it in his inside coat pocket.  So, we now had 10 minutes left, so I chugged the mocha and was rather warm inside.  We met up with the family, gave them our condolences (I grew up with the family’s son, playing outside most of our summers), and sat behind my parents.  My dad immediately asked, “Where were you guys?  Did you go to coffee?”  I chuckled and asked him how he knew.  He said, “Cuz you smell like it!”  Haha…I knew I’d need a mint, but Dave showed my parents his inside pocket, like half-flasher.  It provided the levity we needed.  Soon, the service started.  I had planned to return to work by 1230pm.  The service was only about an hour.  I’d planned for 2.  We were not planning on going to the burial site, so we left after saying our goodbyes.  My dad was going to work, and my mom was going to the site.  We headed back home, but made a detour to sample a cupcake being featured at our favorite cupcake shop.  This was definitely what I needed.  I did manage to wait though, having Dave take them back home when I dropped him back off at the dealership for his car.  I headed to work, and got there right at noon.  I finished work at around 530pm, and poor Peyton was the second to last kid there.  They were about to eat snack, since she was hungry.  I told the teacher normally we’re eating dinner by 530pm.  Poor thing.  We didn’t get home until after 6pm, and Dave was long gone with Brandon at swimming.  They got home, and Brandon was telling us about his not so good day.  He is playing too rough at recess, and is getting REDs as a result.  I told him to be on green by the time I get there for lunch.  If not, he will have to help me do yard duty.  He said, “Well, at recess tomorrow, I’m just going to do NOTHING.”  I told him, “Great!  I hope you stay out of trouble.”  He said, “NO, I am just going to sit there.”  Haha…he meant do nothing as absolutely just sit there, not nothing like he wouldn’t get in trouble.  We’ll see how things unfold tomorrow.
After the kids were in bed, which was right after 7pm, I took off to run.  Today was supposed to be a “HARD” day, meaning I was supposed to run 5 miles at a pace 30-60 seconds per mile faster than my normal pace.  Keeping in theme with it being a “hard” day, I stuck to my guns. I rested yesterday, so I felt okay today, so I started out with a faster pace for me.  Toward the end, I had set a goal to run less than a 10 minute mile average.  That meant kicking it up a bit at the end.  I took a picture for Dave:

A bit blurry, but 49:40, 5 miles!!  576 calories burned, though this is probably inflated, as it is for the default 150# setting.  Enough to cover the cupcake I’m about to consume 🙂    Girl next treadmill musta thought I was nuts.  I tried to be nonchalant about taking the picture, until the flash went off.  Haha…
I’m getting my hair cut this weekend.  Desperate times call for desperate measures.  We’re driving 100 miles one way to go to the lady who originally cut my hair in 6th grade.  She’s since moved away, and still cuts my mom’s hair.  I’m taking Peyton and we’re getting our haircuts.  I couldn’t do it without her, and I really want the legacy to continue.  The lady is about 50 and will be able to say she’s cut three generations of hair.  I told Peyton after school, and she was so excited!  Pictures to come.  I needed to do it this weekend, as I’m trying to cut it before the run at the end of the month.  And next week is Chinese new year dinner.  Phew.  Thanks for sticking to the end.
