Dolphin Tale; Dim Sum; Too tall; Gender Divide

While we were watching Dolphin Tale yesterday, there was one part where the dolphin was alone in the pool.  Peyton, ever the empathetic one, said, “Oh, it’s all alone, so sad.  Look at the whale.”  Brandon started to giggle and said, “That’s not a whale!  It’s a dolphin!  It’s Dolphin Tale!”

This morning, I broke out some of the old tracing books that Brandon never found interesting and asked Peyton if she wanted to color, trace, and learn her letters.  She was eager and even had fun in his old kindergarten prep books.  I had dated some of the material when he completed them, and it turns out that some of the pages she was doing, Brandon had done exactly one year ago!  Her writing isn’t as good, as she is just learning, but she understands some of the concepts, and has fun with the activities, especially all the coloring ones.  We had markers, crayons, and pencil, so she enjoyed it.  Seeing Peyton, Brandon wanted to join in, too.  He just did some free coloring on his own, mixed with baseball practice with Dave in the backyard.  Dave was teaching him some things he learned in the clinic on Friday night.  And he’d just learned Brandon’s team would be the Giants.  Dave is a huge Dodger fan, so this pained him immensely to have Brandon be affiliated with this team.  After practice, we cleaned up and headed out to dim sum with the Chao’s.  It ended up being Kenny and Cameron, as Logan was napping.   Peyton didn’t want to eat much lunch because she wanted her workbook that we’d brought.  I told her she could read it while we were waiting for food, and when she was done. She ate some, then said, “I’m all done, can I have my book now?”  We had a nice lunch with half of the family, and later, Brandon and Cameron were having fun with Cameron’s trains.

Dave went for a bike ride today, up to my dad’s, while I had the kids at home.  I was supposed to coordinate the napping with Dave’s arrival, but Peyton was sound asleep and looked so peaceful. Brandon and I were discussing something that happened earlier, as I’d discovered that at his current height, he could reach the Lego gun storage that we’d been amassing.  Dave asked me why we didn’t just throw them away, but I couldn’t do it.  Instead, I’d just kept them together in a small zipper bag.  Apparently, he’d been crying out to tell me all morning long, “finding” guns in his tote and giving them to me.  It was at this time that I asked him to try to put them back on top of my dresser.  He did it with ease, though Dave didn’t think he could yet reach.  I wondered why there were so many loose guns, since normally he gives them to me upon opening up a set.  Out of curiosity, I looked for the gun bag.  I saw the bag was empty and there were some guns strewn about the top of my dresser.  I took the remainder of the legos in his room out, and he was pretty upset.  Dave was leaving around this time, so instead of Brandon taking a nap, he was sending me hate mail under my door.  Something along the lines of, “I hope you have a stupid day Momey.”  Yes, lovely. He’s seriously a teenager already.  I went in to talk to him calmly and explained that I was upset with him for taking out the guns, and he was upset with me for taking his legos.  I talked about how he can earn things back with positive behavior and we hugged it out.  I’ve now had to find higher ground with which to put things that I don’t want him getting into.  Pretty soon, I’ll need a safe, since he’ll probably outreach me in the next couple of years.  We proceeded to read some more of his reading program, then he was getting restless to go.  I told him we had to wait for Peyton, and I think he purposely went into her room to wake her up.  She awoke a bit cranky, but got excited when I told her we’d be going to Pappa’s house.  We drove up to meet with my dad and Dave.  In the car, Brandon asked Peyton, “Do you like Ninjago’s?”  Peyton said, “No, I like princesses.”  It’s funny that the distinction has been made.  She enjoys Legos but draws the line at nijagos.  They do have a more girlie line of legos these days, but we haven’t yet tapped into it. When we arrived, she spotted Dave’s bike outside and said, “OH! Daddy’s bike!”  When we entered the house, Peyton was still clinging to her books, not following Brandon downstairs despite his requests.  I told her to sit at the table, but since there wasn’t a clear space at any seat, she said, “I cannot!  Because there is stuff there.”  I cleared her a seat, and she got right to work tracing and doing simple mazes.  It’s amazing that these books were virtually untouched from Brandon, but she can’t get enough of them!
