My dad ate my homework; Improvement; Routine

Every month, Brandon is assigned a month of homework – 1) to read 20 books and give a little summary about each and 2) activities to complete with parent(s) to reinforce the monthly theme, seasonal idea, or math concept.  This past month, I did about 75% with Brandon, and wanted Dave to do the rest of the squares (there were about 6-7 left for the last week).  Brandon was off of school last week, so I tried to keep up with the reading program to have some structure to his week.  Truth be told, I usually leave the undesirable squares for Dave to finish up by the end of the month.  He needed a jump rope to complete one task (Brandon said, “Oh, I’m bad at that”) and some other random stuff, like looking up the president’s birthdays and finding the difference between the dates.  Dave claims he asked me for my jump rope, and he wanted me to look up the dates (like on the google).  As I brought Brandon to school today, I realized that his homework was due, and they still hadn’t finished!  We didn’t even bring it to school!  I told Brandon how important it was to be on time with his work, and how important homework and deadlines were.  This has brought me to the conclusion that Dave is fired from homework duty.  Maybe this is much like me with the cooking; if I feign incompetence, I will get fired.  This month’s special project is to make a leprechaun catcher.  Being Dave is the offspring of an engineer and that I’m not mechanically inclined, he was assigned to the project.  I handed him the information sheet, but changed the date to move up the deadline by one week in an attempt to get it done in time.  We’ll see how many leprechaun’s are caught in March.

Today, Brandon got some yogurt raisins in his lunch that were his very own special treat.  He chose them at the store and the way to keep his privilege is to stay out of other kids’ lunches.  I informed his teacher of our deal, and she wrote back at the end of the day that Brandon had had a good day.  When I picked him up, the after school teacher informed me he had a good day and also stayed out of other kids’ stuff.  Yay!  We’re 2-2.  He got into the car and told me, “I didn’t go into anyone’s lunch today.”  He was so proud!  I asked him how the raisins were, and he liked them.  I told him he could continue to have them as long as he kept his hands to himself.  Even though we had a hard weekend, he has turned it around during game time and I’m proud of him!  We are trying him off lactose to see if it works better for his tummy.  We got him lactaid milk and that seems to be better.  We cheat a little bit, like the yogurt raisins, but the pedi thinks yogurt is less of an offender than milk or other dairy.  Maybe that is helping his mood, too.

Now that it’s Monday and school’s back on, we’re back to our usual routine.  Brandon even asked me this morning, “Is it school today?”  I think he’s missed his classmates and the routine of the classroom.  For me, after the kids were in bed and ready for tomorrow, I went to the gym, then blog, then I picked up something I’d left off for two years now – knitting!  I didn’t think I’d remember, but somehow my fingers do.  I don’t remember what I was making, but I’ll just continue where I left off and hope for the best 🙂
