Summertime

Brandon was telling us about an “Ian” in his class on Tuesday. Peyton suddenly whispered, “Kira.” I laughed because Ian and Kira are siblings, but I had to tell her that Brandon was talking about another Ian at his school. This prompted her to ask when we were going to visit Miss Kristina at her old school. She still remembers! I told Kathy today at work, and she said Kira still remembers Peyton, too. And that Peyton’s brother’s name is Brandon.
Brandon was telling us last night how there was an incident at school. There was a new boy at school who started trouble with the teachers, and even threw a chair at one of them (according to Brandon). He got a very serious face, too, and said that he was using “inappropriate language”. It was so bad, Brandon didn’t even want to repeat it. I’m glad I didn’t have to remind him; he kept it to himself on his own.
Peyton pointed to my chest and said, “Oh no, you have a lot of mosquito bites. Right there.” (They were pimples from the sunblock I used on my chest; I didn’t know how to respond, so I simply said, “Yeah, too bad, huh? I’m okay.”

This summer, Peyton is trying to spell everything. She will pick a word from a book, then spell it, then ask me what it is. She’s go “NO” and “YES” along with “GO” and a few others. Or, she will ask how to spell common objects, so along the way to school, we will spell “BUS”, “CAR”, “TREE”, and other random objects. I do try to sound them out for her, so she can practice her phonics, which she is already pretty good at. Sometimes I think she messes with me. If I say, “LL-ah” (for L), she will say, “Um, Z!” Uh, what? When I say, “No…” she will start to giggle. I hope she is messing with me and doesn’t have hearing problems!
Finally, today, Brandon’s CDC went up to the campsite where we were yesterday. The little kids joined the big kids for a day of camp fun. I asked him what he did and he told me, “We went on a creek walk, found two crawfish. I ate a hamburger and a hot dog, some apple juice, no soda though, and went in the pool, but it was too cold.” At dinner, he propped his head up on his arm, and slowly ate dinner. Dave started laughing at him, as he looked so pooped. Brandon sighed and said, “I’m exhausted.” I don’t think I’ve ever heard him use this before.  He sounded so adult!  Since he’d already taken a bath before dinner (since he was outside all day long), we just told him to go to bed after brushing his teeth. He barely finished dinner, and he dragged himself upstairs to bed. He was in bed by 715pm, and I left shortly after to go to the gym. I’m sure he didn’t last long. This camp thing is fantastic!! The teachers did tell Dave that he didn’t have soda, though you couldn’t tell by the way he was acting there – he was very active. He did have 100% apple juice, which was my consolation to him for not having soda. He must have thoroughly enjoyed himself today.
