Rest of the afternoon

So we did lots of work, then ate lunch. In my effort to get my exercise in today, despite being with child, I took Brandon to the park.  He got to pick the close one or the far one.   He chose the far one, so we set out on a brisk walk.  When we got to the park, we hung out on the swings (the reason to go to the far park), and then we had a good game of tag.  I was deemed “it”, so I tried hard to get him.  After about 5 minutes, and some work, I tagged him on the structure.  It was now my turn to run from him.  I managed to stay away from him, but not without some work.  After I declared a truce, we went back to the  swings. He earned 10 minutes extra at the park, so we stayed a bit longer after I had called “Time”.  We came home and grabbed the mail.  Brandon received a game in the mail from his school counselor.  We rushed right home and he showed me how to play it.  He’d played it with her before, and it was for 8 year olds on up.  It’s called “Sleeping Queens” and he was teaching me how to play.  I had the instructions open to follow along, but he did an adequate job of explaining the rules.  We played best 2 out of 3, and he got me.  The game involves some addition, and he was able to make equations with three numbers.  It was pretty fun!  I had him write a “Thank you” card to Ms Lorretta right away.

We went to get Peyton, and I told him that I’d spent all day with him, so it was her turn with me.  Brandon agreed.  He went to play by himself and watch a show while I worked with Peyton on her workbooks.  He did reasonably well, but Dave got home an hour later than normal, and Brandon was losing his ability to play by himself.  He came down to earn more points on his math, and was becoming a bit needier.  I sent him to take a bath just to kill time and give me more time with Peyton.  I gave Peyton hers, too.  Finally, Dave brought dinner home.  I found out that Brandon can do some addition in his head, and I’m even having to write and carry 10’s, while he can do it sometimes in his head.  I’m not sure how he does it since I told him as long as he’s consistent, he can do it the “unconventional” way.  I carry one’s to the 10’s column, but he chooses to add the ones, then adds the 10’s, then adds those together.  Jeff said it was okay to not have the kids add up numbers the old school way if the kids don’t see it that way.

Brandon got to stay up later tonight to play with Dave, and Peyton was sent upstairs early after brushing her teeth.  She was being naughty, and climbing on the outside of the stairs.  Suddenly, we heard a crash, and tumbling.  She must have fallen at least 4 stairs, and almost looked like she sommersaulted.  She’d tried it earlier today, and was lucky, as she caught herself from a slip, and was hanging onto the bannister by an arm.  I let her fail to learn a lesson, but apparently, she didn’t learn.  Maybe after this most recent fall, she will learn her lesson.  I’m resisting the urge to go check on her.  She just came out again to give me her rubber band in her hair (she doesn’t sleep with them in, but it was there for dinner).  She looks just fine.
