End of An Era

Today may mark the end of Dave’s head coaching era. We showed up at 750 am, and the other team did not. That meant we got our first victory! Well, the boys didn’t see it that way. They played a scrimmage game, though they really wanted a piece of the refs. The refs just took a breather, and Dave called fouls and the kids helped the refs keep score in between their chit-chatting. So many parents were cheering for Brandon to shoot the ball whenever he had it. There were a couple of other kids who’d never scored either who were encouraged to score. Dave tried to spread the kids out, and he tried to pass the ball to those who had never taken a shot before. The kids really had fun. Even more fun was the celebration breakfast after the game. All 10 kids showed up, and it was cute to see them all interact. Of course, Peyton wanted in there, too, so she hung around the boys as they were doing whatever games and looking at phones, etc. Finally, as Dave was passing out the pictures and medals, Jonathan asked him, “Will you be my coach again next year?” It was really sweet. All the families thanked him for coaching, and all the players signed a card for him. The families chipped in and donated a present to Coach, too. It was perfect, since he needed groceries anyway! I think it was a great experience for him, and it remains to be seen whether he will do it again. He says he is more assistant coach material, as I was trying to coach him to say something nice about each player before handing them their medal. Instead, he handed it to them with a “Great season” (short and sweet, so his style!) Peyton and I headed over to ballet, while the boys headed in another direction. She participated about 50%, so she didn’t quite get her earned treats. She got to go to Sydney’s party, which we did after changing her clothes yet again (she had been in 3 different outfits before 12 pm). We made a beeline to Sydney, and Peyton wished her happy birthday, and then she and Orion took off to play games. Each had a little bucket of coins, and they had a great time. Orion’s mom and I just chatted away, while watching the girls. We had to intervene on a few occasions, to help them work things out, but mostly they got along. Pizza was shortly thereafter, and then cake. Peyton said, “Sydney told us she was having an Oreo cake.” And sure enough, there was Oreo cake! We’d shared a piece of cake at Brandon’s party, knowing that there would probably be cake at Sydney’s. Peyton amazed me by only eating about 3/4 of a piece (usually she eats the whole thing!) She asked for water, and drank only that. I think she was too excited to get back to playing that she didn’t want to finish her cake. She did have a meltdown when she waited in line for the ticket blaster (it’s an air chamber where you grab as many tickets as you can), and then was told it was only for the birthday guest. We saw as one boy got a ticket in the eye, so I convinced her she didn’t want to do that anyway. I lured her away with the prospect of more tickets while playing games. She was okay with that. Peyton went up to both Sydney and her mom and said, “Thank you!” and even wished Sydney another happy birthday. Sydney told us she was staying 😉 I had a bit of trouble getting an over-tired Peyton to sleep at 3pm, but she finally crashed on the floor in her room. It is definitely NOT pretty when she is in need of a nap and isn’t able to get it. Now that she is awake, I’ve given her back her magic wand that she got from collecting her tickets. Here are pictures from both events
