Fun in the Rain

I picked Peyton up, and we hurried home to eat dinner. I told her we could walk to the park and see the baseball practice, but she had to eat dinner properly and not make a mess. She ate her chicken, snap peas, and carrots. I told her it was best to eat all the different colors. She looked down at her plate and said, “But I don’t have red.” My veggie platter was still out, and she said, “Can I have a tomato?” She doesn’t like tomatoes. I told her, “But you don’t like tomatoes, are you sure you want one?” She nodded. I gave her one of the grape-sized tomatoes. She took a bite, then gagged. I told her she had to eat it since she’d asked for it. I told her to use some hummus from her plate. She dipped it, then started eating the rest without complaint. She said, “Yeah, it’s not bad!” I’m glad she was willing to give it another chance! I said, “Next time we go to In and Out, are you going to eat the tomato?” She said, “Yes!” Wow! She keeps asking when she can bring a lunch to school. She has the lunch calendar, and she will review it on the way to school. One day, she had hot dogs, veggies, fruit and milk. She was telling me about it, and she told me about eating hot dogs. I told her she didn’t have to, and that she could eat more of the veggies. She said, “But there were no veggies.” I asked her what she meant. She said, “But there were only fries!” ACK! Fries are NOT veggies. So I told her we could bring her own lunch next time there were beans and weanies or hot dogs and fries (about once per month for each). With the polka dots?” She remembers her bag from over two years ago! I did tell her she can bring that to school. Some of the other kids bring their own food, for what ever reason. So, her first home lunch will be on Friday. I’d previously not wanted to have her stand out from her classmates and have her eating different food from the other kids, but it sounds like she is asking for something else. She was even requesting carrots. It is a nut-free school, so we will have to keep that in mind when we bring food for her.
So, she finished up dinner, and we got ready to leave out the front door. As soon as I opened it, we were met with light sprinkles. It wasn’t too bad, but she told me, “I guess we can’t go outside.” That didn’t stop her from making it down the steps. I told her, “Go put your rain boots on, let’s go walking!” She’d already had her jacket with a hood, as did I, and it wasn’t raining that badly, so off we went. She was so excited to be out! We got to the park as the baseball team was disbanding. The structure was wet, so I told her she had to be careful, especially since her rain boots were slippery. She got to play for about 5 minutes while Dave cleaned up his stuff. We ended up driving back home, since the rain was coming down a bit more by then. Dave decided he didn’t want to go to the PTA meeting tonight, so he got the kids down, while I headed to the gym early. I would have been late to the meeting by the time I was ready to go anywhere, but for the gym, I was earlier than usual, so it was nice. By the time I came home, the kids were in bed, but still awake. I gave them each a hug, then it was quiet time.
