This year was a little different Mother’s day for me. It started out Friday morning, when we all woke up and headed right to school. For the first time in a long time, Peyton was dropped off first. We got her there right around 710 am. She had her last morning with Ms Lauren, just one on one. Then, we rushed back to Brandon’s school for some muffins with Mom. On our way there, Brandon said, “We’re early! And early birds get the worm!” I asked him if he knew what that expression meant. He said, “The earlier you go to something, then you get to eat the worm.” I did tell him he was a little right, and then made a minor adjustment and told him we didn’t eat worms. He laughed at that, and I think he preferred muffins in any case. We were one of the first to arrive, and we selected our muffin half, and Brandon took a banana half, and we sat down. I got some coffee, and I got him some OJ. He ate his muffin, then asked for more. I’d given him egg whites and cheese in the car on the way to school, but it wasn’t enough. He ended up eating about a whole banana by the time he put the pieces together. And we each had 3/4 of a muffin. I was a bit pressed for time, but I didn’t want to short-change him. After breakfast, around 750am, he said he was all done, and “What’s next?” I told him nothing; we just hang out. It was getting more crowded by now, so he just wanted to go back to the before-school program. So, I walked him back there, and gave him an extra hug goodbye. I reminded him to come to after school program today, since Dave would be picking him up. He knew I was going to LV, so he didn’t put much of a fight up. I then drove myself to the park and fly hotel and got checked in there. The shuttles run on the half and full hours, so I had intended to get there before 9, but made it for the 830 am shuttle. The flight was at 1020 am, but either way, I wanted to allow enough time. Turns out, the shuttle was right on time, and we were doing well on timing. I got through security without problems and plopped myself in a chair to read. After about 20 minutes, Alexa texted me to tell me she was there, and then later, called. We had about 10 minutes of chatting before we lined up for our flight. She had a higher boarding pass, so she lined up first, and told me she’d save me a seat. I met her on the plane and we caught up some more. We’ve known each other since 1st grade, and see each other now and then, keeping loosely in touch over the years – college, after college, and beyond. But it’s very easy to pick up where we left off, and continue on. When we landed, we called Laurie, who was on her way to pick us up. We’d be staying at her house for the weekend, and she was all ready for us! We hadn’t eaten, so we dropped our stuff at her house, and then went to go find something to eat. We picked a place near a store she wanted to shop after, so we had lunch at Tommy Bahama’s. It was definitely getting me in the mood for this coming week’s itinerary (not that I really have to get in the mood for tropical food). I had a mango and chicken salad that was super yummy. We had lunch and all of us chatted before going shopping. I found a couple of things, and then also shopped for Laurie’s unborn daughter. We headed back to the house for a nap, then since lunch was so big, we just headed down to the strip for our show. We’ve grown up with the “Boy” bands, but there were only a few that I really enjoyed. We’ve seen this particular group many times in the past, and they put on a great show wherever! They started with big arenas, then to our local community theater, where our husbands scrubbed $50 together for two of us to go back stage to meet them and take photos, and most recently to the county fair, which was sold out. We weren’t allowed in, since it was at capacity. We took some photos in the lobby area, then headed to our seats. Seventh row, on the aisle, at Laurie’s local rate discount. Amazing. It was such a small, intimate theater. No balcony, not a bad seat in the house! Ours just happened to be super-close up! The show started about 5 minutes after it was supposed to, and we all had a blast. They allowed pictures, video, you name it! Some were even in the aisle crouched down taking photos with “real ” cameras. I just had my cell phone, and did the best that I could. It was such a walk down memory lane, with the girls at either side. At one point, they invited guests to come down for roses! Somehow, I’ve aged over the years, and I’m no longer as shy as I used to be. I headed down the aisle! I had an outstretched hand, and had my hand on a rose before letting go, since someone else had reached it behind me. I didn’t want to have drama, so I let go. They were singing like a foot away from me, by the time I had my hands and arms outstretched with my phone. Crazy experience! After the show, it was only 930 pm, so we followed Alexa to the tables. She played pai gow while we chatted with a man and his wife next to us. They asked us where we were from, and we told him our general vicinity. The wife blurted out that the guy was from B-mont. We all responded saying, “We went to C-mont HS!” He then said that he was the “Athlete of the Year for the class of ’65”. He’s my dad’s age! We were talking about our high school, how it was for us, him, and what it’s like now. He was really funny, and they’d just gone to our concert, and SHE had a rose! She was like how Laurie would be in 20-30 years. She also liked JT, and couldn’t wait to see him. They were living in STL now, and I chimed in that Dave went to grad school at MU. We left when Alexa had had her fill and headed home. Scott was in the living room watching TV at home, and we caught him up on what our evening had been like. We also had a small snack before heading to bed, but it was after midnight, which was a late night for all of us! I shared a room with Alexa, and it was my intention to sleep in, but unfortunately, my inner clock had something else to say about that. I was up by 730am, which technically IS sleeping in for me. I read some more, then waited for the rest to wake up. We got moving for breakfast after a few hours, but we really had no agenda. We sat at a coffee shop, outside in the shade, for a couple of hours. The weather was perfect in the shade! We headed back home, stocked up on water, then headed to downtown LV. I hadn’t been there in awhile, and Alexa wanted to try her luck there. While watching at the tables, I got to catch up with Dave about Brandon’s game. My parents came down to watch him in action. They missed his pop fly catch! But fortunately, they also missed him hit into a double play. I went back in to find Laurie and Alexa. After Alexa was done, we headed back to home. We rested up, and then headed to a restaurant I’d gone to last in Reno. It was super yummy chicken and waffles, and I wanted more! Laurie had a birthday coupon to redeem from a couple of months ago, so we were in business. Scott joined us, as he’d also wanted to come! Alexa and I shared a salad and an order of chicken and waffles. She’d never been, and I encouraged her to split it with me! She thanked me when she saw the size of it! We then headed over to the M, which I’d never been to before. They were having a wedding and prom there, so it was fun watching the girls in their dresses. Prom dresses have definitely changed over the years. We headed home after that, and I got packed up and ready to go home the next morning. My flight was at 845 am, but I wanted to get there with enough time to not rush. Laurie was gracious enough to drive me to the airport, and everyone else stayed home still asleep. It was a smooth trip back; I got back to pick up my car and headed home. I had coffee on the plane expecting not much sleep once I got home, as the day was in full swing. Dave was out shopping for our upcoming family trip, so I got to unpack and clean up a bit before they got home. Peyton came in first, and immediately asked for me. I got big hugs from her, and then I caught up with Brandon on his weekend, too. We then packed up and headed to my parents’ house. Dave had been there on Saturday, as he worked for a few hours while the kids stayed there after the game. But my aunt, grandma and uncle were there, too, so we wished everyone a happy mother’s day. Peyton refused to sleep, so I told her she couldn’t play the video games Brandon was, given he had actually fallen asleep in the car. She was okay with that. She did join Brandon when he was outside blowing bubbles. They had a lot of fun making, then chasing the bubbles around. We had dinner at home, then we quickly left, as it was almost 7pm. The kids were each eating a half ear of corn, which helped them stay up. We started losing Brandon at the end of the drive, but he managed to stay awake. Neither of them put up a fight going to bed and staying there. Dave and I are trying to pack our stuff for our trip, but it seems overwhelming! I’m still doing laundry from this weekend, too. The kids are looking forward to it, especially since some of our friends are already there. Happy Mother’s Day to all the hard-working moms out there. I’m glad Dave was able to manage the kids this weekend so I could celebrate in my own special way 😉
Pictures to come!
