Fish! Birthday Party

This morning was the first swim class for the summer. We get the same time slot, first thing in the morning so we can start our day earlier. We arrived at the pool with 5 minutes to spare. I’d been prepping Peyton and telling her how important it is to listen to the teachers, especially in the beginning when they assess the kids. This is how they lump the kids, by ability now, no longer by age. She is now in the “4 and up” group. Knowing how stubborn she can be, I was afraid she wouldn’t listen to the coaches and they’d think she didn’t know how to do what was asked. She also watched a video of Marcus and Mckayla swimming like fish in a pool last night. I told her, “If you don’t do what they ask, then they will put you in the baby class, since they won’t think you can swim.” It is best to appeal to her competitive side, because bribing her with anything else won’t work. She and Brandon sat together poolside, and the guards asked the parents to move far away from the pool. We were only a few of the obedient parents; the rest took a step back, but not nearly as far as the guards had requested. So, we saw from far away that Peyton was just staring at the teacher who asked them to swim out from the wall. Brandon went right away, and Peyton looked back for a second. Then she pushed off the wall, and glided to the guard. The next thing I saw was one guard taking four kids away to the deeper area. It was Brandon, another boy from last year in his class, who is a stronger swimmer than Brandon, a girl about 5-6, in between Brandon and Peyton’s age, and then Peyton bringing up the rear. She’s about 42 inches lately, but they were headed to the four foot area. I thought it was a mistake, and she was being stubborn again by following Brandon around. We were almost going to go tell her to go back when the guard told them to all swim over to the wall at the opposite side of the pool. The boys got to the wall first, and the two girls needed a bit of a push. When they got to the wall, he started asking their names. The guards never called her back, instead were sorting out the other three groups of kids that remained. I was amazed! Peyton would be a dolphin! She was very determined to keep up with the group, playing red light/green light. She was very careful in listening to the commands, while the boys jumped the gun a bit. But they were faster in the water, but she was methodical. Brandon was using both arms and legs, and in the beginning, Peyton was only using legs. Suddenly, it clicked for her, too, and she got more arms involved. She did a better job than last year staying on the wall while the coach took each kid one by one. She and Brandon did goof around a bit, but not as bad as I would have imagined. I looked around to what the other groups were doing, and I could see that Peyton may have been bored with them. She is definitely going to be challenged in this group, but I think that will make her stronger in the end. The kids got out of the pool after 30 minutes, and then we semi-dried off before getting back into the car. We headed to Logan’s birthday party, as both kids were excited to help him celebrate. It worked out well since it was being held at the pool! But they were on structures and jumpy houses first, then pool later. We arrived and Michelle, Mckayla and the Brown’s were all there. The kids went to play on the structure, then suddenly, I saw something dripping from Peyton’s suit. Apparently, she thought it was okay to pee through her suit! ICK! So, Dave went to hose her down, before bringing her back again. Luckily, she was waterproof and there was soap in the restroom. Peyton was hungry, so she started eating when the others did. Brandon preferred to play a bit on the structures, and only wanted to eat a little fruit. He got himself up onto the rock wall, but then needed help getting down. I only coached him down, telling him where to put his foot. I didn’t want to “save’ him by carrying him off of there. He did scrape his knee a bit, but nothing out of the usual for him. He was saved when Ian, Kira, and Kathy showed up. He now had more of a playmate, especially as he likes older kids. After lunch, we headed to the pool area. There were many rules, and one of which was kids under 7 had to be within an arms’ reach of a parent. I was dressed for the pool, but since only Peyton needed a chaperone, Dave was going in. Brandon and Ian had fun with one another, and it was shallow enough for them both to stand, but deep enough for them to still have fun. Robert and Ashlyn were on the noodle, swimming around, and Marcus was with Ted. Peyton was just goofing around. Mckayla took and passed the swim test, so she could swim unassisted! Logan and Connor preferred to hang out on the steps, playing with the rings. Kathy couldn’t go in due to recent minor surgery on her back, so Kira couldn’t go. I asked her if she wanted to go with me, and she agreed! So, I went in with Kira, who clung to me with all four limbs at one point. I assured her that I wouldn’t drop her, and she was able to relax a bit. I took her out with a noodle, and she had fun kicking around. The kids were playing with the noodles and diving for rings. At one point, since I’d been holding on to her the whole time, I started looking around, found Brandon, and then laid eyes on Peyton. I suddenly forgot that I had Kira, and wondered why Peyton was over there. I looked down and then remembered! Haha…senior moment. We got them out of the pool before we were asked to get out, and they quickly showered and dried off. Kathy came over to get Kira, and she mentioned she was surprised Kira agreed to go with me. Glad she was able to have fun, too. Brandon made up for lost time, and ate food at this point. Peyton had round two or three, whatever she was on. Dave and I did the same. We headed out and challenged the kids to stay awake on the drive home. They were playing with the swords they’d gotten from the goodie bags. Brandon even told me the sword was keeping them up! We got them bathed, and then Peyton went down for a nap. I was sitting in her room, about to blog, and she turned to me and smiled. The next thing I knew, she was fast asleep. She may sleep for awhile since she was tired out for all the day’s activities. Brandon is playing quietly in his room, just as he was asked.

Here’s the picture of the kids eating. Peyton wanted to sit next to Connor, but Connor wanted Raz to sit next to him, too.
