AR Update

Brandon’s had some difficulty with reading comprehension tests. He likes to read books, but doesn’t necessarily read them for comprehension. Sometimes he bites off more than he can chew with these mystery books. But when it comes down to taking tests online for comprehension, he’ll get 58-80% on books like “Clifford”. Really?! I get emailed whenever he takes a test, so I can look up the book and see how difficult it is. I got an email this week that said:

Dear Robyn,
Brandon took an Accelerated Reader Reading Practice Quiz today.

Typically, he’s earned 0.5 points at a time, and that’s only if he’s getting 100% for an easier book. The points are earned based on reading level as well as percentage right on the quiz. 2.7 is a LOT of points at one time, so I looked up the book. It’s a 3 on the AR, equivalent to 3rd grade, and it’s a series that appeals to 4-8th graders. It’s 130 pages, while books like Clifford are at best 15-20 with big pictures, at that. I did tell him, as I always do, that I’m able to look up books that he’s reading. I told him what a great job he did, and he said he’d read it in class all week, then took the quiz. He read those books last year, but then he’d get scared doing so. He’s recently checked out another. I think he’s motivated, as he recently surpassed the 10 point mark. He gets a leaf up on the reading tree at school, but more importantly, he gets a free mini pan pizza. He’s hooked now.
