This was my first week on maternity leave – it flew by! I am definitely doing more to keep busy than I ever did with Brandon, probably because of the time of year. I finished up the last of my Christmas shopping this week, wrapped all the gifts, and delivered some of them. We had our Secret Santa exchange midweek, and then ended the week with my dad’s office Christmas party on Friday night. We enjoyed a nice 5-course meal at a Chinese-French place in the city. Brandon even got his own 3-course special kids meal – two pot stickers, won ton soup, and then a huge plate of chicken, bok choy and noodles! That didn’t stop him from eating some of my puff pastry or part of the coconut where the soup was contained, digging into my lobster (we each got a whole lobster), my Peking duck bow-bow, or the aspargus that went with the Filet. He even ate some of the salad we got as our appetizer. Needless to say, it was a yummy dinner. I think he was starving because it was about 8pm when we started to eat dinner. Shoot, I was starving by then. He got his own big boy chair, and sat through dinner either eating or drawing on the place settings. He only slipped off the paper a couple of times (hope the restaurant has some good stain remover). We each got our own dessert, even him; I’m glad it felt healthy, since it was a peach mousse with raspberry coulis. We played some games – somehow we always manage to take part in the cash prizes. Nice winning (read: taking) money again from my dad! This year, Dave and I made out with $100 – thanks to Dave’s charades rendition of “Home Alone”. I guessed from his clue and won the table of 8 of us each $50. Then we also won the Scavenger Hunt to find the business cards stashed throughout the restaurant. Brandon did ok through the games, but freaked out a bit when Dave had left the room as part of one of the games. He screamed, “Daddy…I want Daddy.” My mom tried to calm him down, which he did until one of the other games require that a “man kiss a man” so Dave grabbed Brandon (from my mom) and kissed him on the cheek. We were ruled against as Yolanda said Brandon wasn’t a man (yet). Dave tried again and kissed my dad on the head, but Yolanda wasn’t having that either, another two men had already sealed the deal (we didn’t win the “subjective” games, given we were at the boss’ table. I wish I had had a camera out and had been fast enough to see Dave peck the top of my dad’s head (he was seated at the time). Anything for cash, right?
The last event was the gift exchange. I got a set of bowls, a set of speakers, and a squishy stress ball. Dave got my parents’ re-gifts from last year (my mom forgot to bring them last year, so she brought them again this year). He wanted the iPod docking station, as my mom said it was twice the value of the requested amount for gifts. Unfortunately, someone else wanted it, too. And it was stolen twice. Then Dave got stuck with gift #2 – a lighted stand mirror, like the kind you use to put make-up on. It’s too big for Dave to use to cut his hair, so today we returned it to one of the stores, which surprisingly still had it available (remember, my mom bought it last year!).
We decided not to stay over my parents’ house last night even though we had another party at their house today at lunchtime; we’re still working on the sleep training and that would have probably set us back. So we drove home last night, around midnight, and plopped Brandon into his own bed. Dave woke me up at 7am because he turned on his laptop, so I started watching the rest of my rented movie. About an hour later, I saw the handle on our door being pushed down. It looked like a ghost was coming in, like the handle was possessed. Well, it was Brandon, coming in around 815am, looking so proud of himself. “I slept in my own bed,” he declared. We brought him up to the bed, and he started watching cartoons. We started to get ready early, so we could go back to my parents’ house. We dropped Brandon off with my mom and went to run some errands. We got these pans that are eco-friendly, safe-cooking non-stick pans. Then we also went to get Brandon’s gift from Santa. Oops, so I wasn’t completely done shopping for Christmas gifts. We got him a Lego ambulance and a fire truck so that he can add it to his Lego/Duplo collection. My mom went out with Brandon for some groceries for the party, and also picked up some things for our playdate with Decki tomorrow (more on that later). When we got back to the house, we started prepping the meat for the party. Some of my dad’s ex and current employees were coming over for an MJ party. My dad asked us over to help cook (we’re earning our keep). Of course, the other half of the family decided to come late, and just showed up whenever they wanted, not contributing anything to the cooking or serving. Whatever. Anyways, after they had all eaten, they started playing poker. I took this opportunity to have Brandon take a nap. I used some of our new-found techniques and asked him if he wanted to take a nap in my old room or the guest room (he had to take a nap no matter what, that wasn’t negotiable). I also used my “when/then” meaning “when you take a nap, then you may watch cartoons”. After testing out my bed and the couch in the family room, he selected the guest bed. He wanted Mickey pillow, oops, but I told him we didn’t have it here, so I gave him a choice of the VS pink doggie or my star pillow (teenie bopper things, I didn’t have much to work with). He chose both; I covered him up with a soft throw, which he first resisted, then felt and wanted to be covered up. He said, “I want you to sleep here, Mommy,” while he patted the bed next to him. I told him I wasn’t going to nap with him, and I walked out of the room, closing the door behind me. He didn’t resist! I was shocked. I walked back upstairs and Dave and my mom were amazed that I had come back so fast. About 5 minutes later, Dave went back downstairs to check. I found him sitting in the family room alone. Again, shocked. My mom came down to find both of us sitting in silence. The door was cracked a little bit, so we could see inside. He was quiet, occasionally sitting up, but he remained inside the room. Two minutes passed, and we looked in the crack again, and he was out. I was so proud of him!! It only lasted about 1 hour, since the girls came down to play MJ and were a bit loud. I gave Brandon a big hug for taking a nap all by himself. True to my word, we watched Bug’s Life when he was more awake. He was still yawning, so I knew he was tired, but at least he got an hour in. We didn’t stay too long, leaving around 730pm, so we could head home for the usual nightly routine. I think we’re finally making a break-through!!
Tomorrow, I have my department White elephant gift exchange and dim sum, and then Decki’s coming over for a playdate and we’re going to make and decorate sugar cookies, and then we have Dave’s birthday dinner with the rest of the family after that! Another full day. I hope the playdate goes well – it’ll be the first time Decki has come here (compared with the 3 times we’ve been there). We’ve been a little hesitant to have them come here, but Brandon has been asking, “Can Decki come over to our house?” Decki’s house is 10x the size of ours, so I had to come up with something that could hopefully “contain” them. I made some cookie dough with Brandon on Thursday, and bought a bunch of decorating stuff for them. We picked out all the cookie cutters that interested Brandon – Carolyn had given us a humongous set for our wedding – but Brandon fished out the train, car, and truck ones, and he wanted some of the letters – so we have “B”, “C” and “D” for Brandon, Caiden (Decki’s brother), and Decki. We also pulled out “M” for Mommy, and “A” for Amy, Decki’s mom’s name. I told him we only had so much room in the ziploc bag so we had to limit his choices. After some negotiation, we fit about a dozen or so shapes. I prepared him and told him that Decki is our guest, so he gets the first pick in what shapes he wants to use and that they have to share. Decki’s dad said part of the appeal with Brandon and Decki is that it is a love/hate relationship. So I have to prepare for that, and teach Brandon how to be a good host. We shall see!
