Practical

I was deleting some texts that I had been accumulating, as they were taking up more memory that I cared to spare. I found one that I’d sent to Dave while we were in Boston. We were getting breakfast, and Peyton noticed on the chalkboard, “Soy milk is 0.50$. Yes, there were four carafes for “milk” – nonfat, cream, soy, and whole. And I did get soy milk 🙂 Is she practical? Or being Chinese? 🙂 Next up, napkins?!

Responsible, Friendly Leader

Brandon won the award for Responsibility on Friday, but he was a bit disappointed while we were walking back to the car after school was done. I asked him why, and he responded, “Because I wanted leadership. I got it three times so far.” I told him that being responsible was a good characteristic of a good leader. He didn’t seem to buy it. Game Quotes

Today, Peyton put her UCLA shirt on in the morning. The kids went out to ride bikes, while I went to run and get coffee. We’d been waiting all day long for the game to start, and when it did, she said, “WOO HOO!” and pointed to her shirt. Then, as we did watch the game, she quickly got bored and said, “Can I go practice the piano?” She’d already practiced early this morning, but she wanted some more, I guess. Double Duty

This morning, we were getting ready to go to school. Brandon was getting an award, but he didn’t know. Dave took off with Brandon while I got the camera and took Peyton. We went to get breakfast out, since I never take her. We got an oatmeal each, and I caffeinated. We got back to school, and I signed in the office, while she took off. I met up with Dave, who was hiding, in stalker mode with his hood up. He was trying to hide from Brandon. We waited until his name was called, then he was too busy or not paying attention to hear his name. We got a picture of the award winners for RESPONSIBILITY, then Dave headed to work. I walked with the class to read. I was a bit nervous, since it was a larger class (32), and they are older kids. The silly attention getting tricks with kinders don’t work as well with older kids. Brandon was also mortified I was there, but I did not introduce myself as his mom. The other mom and I prepped a bit in the back area, while the teacher got the students to do their usual morning routine. After we were done chatting, I walked around trying to learn the kids’ names. I knew about half of them from over the years, but I still needed some work. We had the kids introduce themselves, and I was able to meet a few more. But I still have problems with the more ethnic names. I got the two “Brians” and “Max”, but I’m having problems with the A Indian names. The lesson wrapped up nicely, then I went back home to change gears for the first graders. I went back 30 minutes later, thinking I’d show up a little early to meet with that mom. I didn’t see her, so I walked over to the classroom. The kids were not there, so I waited outside. They were coming in from arts/dance, and Peyton saw me from quite a bit away. I couldn’t see her clearly, but I saw some kid waving, so I figured it was her. The other mom didn’t show up by the time the kids were in the class. I told the teacher I’d wait for just a bit, but as the kids were already sitting on the carpet area, and it was 11:03, I decided to start without her. I did my intro, and was getting to know the kids when she strolled in around 11:10 am. REALLY?!?! Geez…she is a stay at home mom, so it wasn’t like she was coming in from work and that’s why she was late. I just continued, and did my lesson. I wouldn’t want the teacher to think I was a slacker, so it looked bad in my opinion to show up late to something we had all agreed upon. The lesson went well, though one of the kids in the front row kept trying to trip me by sticking out his legs. Good thing I learned his name quickly, as I called him out on it. The lesson ended in the allotted time, which was great for us. Unlike Brandon’s class where he ignored me, she asked me to come over, planted a wet one on my cheek with a hug, and good bye. I went home to have lunch before going back to school to pick Peyton up. She practiced her piano without tears (yay!), and then she read quietly to herself. We headed back to get Brandon, making it 4 round-trips to school today – start of school/ his class, her class, her pick up, and his pick up. Yikes. Brandon practiced his piano, and then when Dave came home, Peyton and I left for the library. It was a low key evening for us, with salad and chicken from a take out place that Dave’s been ordering because of credits he’s received. We sent the kids to bed early since they’d been out late all week long. phew, we made it through another rough, busy week!
While the kids were getting to bed, Brandon asked Peyton how her class went today. I guess he wanted to compare notes of my presentation to them.  She requested my presence there so in sure she didn’t mind at all.

Desk assignments

Brandon’s teacher is teaching them financial responsibility. They get money for turning their homework in, and don’t if they don’t. If they are caught running or something unsafe, they get a fine and money gets taken away. Now, they have to apply for their desk assignments, and they have to “pay rent” for said desks. So, they have to account for their rent before being able to shop for goodies in the student store. I love it! His application listed five guy friends, and one girl, G. He told me he had to pick one girl. I asked him if G picked him. He said they aren’t allowed to look at other people’s applications. We’ll see what he gets; he said they will find out Monday. He also gets his math teacher assignment on Monday. They are breaking the class up by math ability, and starting to switch classes.

Height. Brandon’s class lined up by height, unofficially, and he told me he was 6th tallest in his class. I asked where G was, and he said she was 5th. So they were standing next to each other in line…haha. He still doesn’t say much about it.

Last science night – done! After swim class, the kids split up to different practices. I took Brandon to his, while Dave took Peyton to hers. Hers was cancelled due to heat. He normally would have taken over, since the parents were all disappointed and visibly irked, but it gave him the opportunity to get stuff done. He fed Peyton and got her to do her homework, while I was planning to warm Brandon up myself. But then the team was already warming up across the field, so he declined my help. Last week, I left, and when I came back, he was miserable. This time, I made sure I stayed put, especially as nothing was going on with Peyton. I cheered for him and instructed him from the side to pay attention or run harder. He caught a pop fly once, but didn’t know what to do with it when a runner was going without tagging up. I, along with the other coaches, shouted for him to throw it to first, where the runner left. I know you’re not supposed to, but I wanted them to know I was there. He was still not much in the infield, but according to Brandon he wants to play center field. They put him on second, and he was trying to turn double plays, and he looked so awkward trying to throw across his body. After the team huddle, one kid said he wanted to run. The coaches weren’t making them, and they told us, but the kid took off to the tree. Soon after, another one left after him, then another. Brandon was #5 or 6, and I was shocked! I told the mom next to me that it was definitely peer pressure. We came home around 7 pm; science night ended at 8, meaning that Peyton hadn’t been there that long. So, Brandon and I ate dinner, he showered and brushed his teeth. We got to school around 745 pm, and I started talking to a mom, while Brandon went to make another kazoo. Soon, Peyton found me, and right at 8 pm the place shut down. As I was buckling Peyton up because she was holding too much stuff, I found this:

I took the kids home, and then Peyton showered up, while Brandon went to sleep. Now, I’m prepping for my reading in both classes tomorrow. I happen to be on the first rotation for this month. And we have Citizen of the Month for our RESPONSIBLE child – Brandon! The teacher let me know yesterday…so great for him!

Alone Time

I got to spend time with Brandon yesterday. Dave took Peyton to the A’s game right after setting up for science night.  Brandon did some homework at cdc so I checked that. He did two worksheets for elapsed time.  He was to finish up before we were going to go to science night. Then he said, “I have good news and bad news.” He’d had his meeting for student council that day at lunch, so I told him to start with the good news.  He showed me the candidate application.  I congratulated him for making the appearance especially since that meant he had to burn lunchtime.  Then I asked what the bad news is.  He said, “I may not win. There were like 50 people who showed up.” I told him that wasn’t bad news.  I told him trying was the good news.  He was taking it seriously at least.  He had to get parent signatures, his own and his teacher’s.  Then turn the form in on Friday.  He had to come up with 3 reasons he wanted to run.  His first, “My mom made me.”   Uh, um, no.  So he came up with “Because I’m a leader.”  And then “I like school and want to be involved in school activities.”  He has yet to name a third reason but he has some time.  So we headed out to dinner – Indian food since Peyton wasn’t around. We both got through our spicy meals but it was tough.  We made it back to science night and he enjoyed moving around the stations while I chatted with parents I saw.  He kept his eye on me while I tried to do the same with him. I wasn’t as good about seeing him as he was with me knowing he didn’t want to be left behind, I’m sure.  We left before eight since he said he was done.  He showered up and was in bed by 8:30.   It was a relaxed evening with the boy.  Here he is all smiles:

Peyton came home from the game around 945 pm and came up to my bed.  I’d gone to sleep around 915 but was out cold.  She said, “hi mommy” and woke me from sound sleep!! My heart was racing trying to get my wits about me.  She showered and then went straight to bed.  Hopefully she has a good day today.  She’ll have another daddy day as he will take her to practice and science night with him. I’ll have Brandon again at baseball practice.  Another long day.

Band day 2

While I was driving back home after work, I got a call from cdc. It was from the director’s number.  I answered and it was Brandon who abruptly asked, “Where’s my clarinet?”  I told him, “Hello.  It’s Brandon, mommy, was the way you should start a conversation on the phone.” But he sounded a bit panicked.  I told him I was on my way home to get it then would get him shortly. He was eagerly awaiting my arrival.  I told him band didn’t start until 335 pm.  Presently it was 305 pm.  I had him figure out elapsed time to see how much longer we had.  He took awhile but figured out we had 30 minutes.  The director and I had a laugh about proper phone etiquette which Brandon lacks and then I told her the bright side is he cared! And he didn’t want to miss band.  I told her last week was BTSN and we switched schedules around to accommodate.  I told Brandon we’d be reading in the car.  But Peyton needed to be picked up.  She opted to stay so Brandon read 20 minutes to me in the parking lot.  We went to band, and I dropped him off and waited in the back. I grabbed his water bottle half way through but stayed much of it. The other mom asked me if Brandon had practiced.  Fortunately, I was able to tell her yes!

After he was done, we went to get Peyton. H’s dad was getting her at the same time. Ryan said, “Whatcha got there?” Pointing to his case.  Brandon said, “Clarinet.”  Ryan asked, “Are you good?”  Brandon said, “Yeah!”   Love this kid’s confidence. I was signing Peyton out so I wasn’t sure what I’d heard.  But I confirmed, and he said yes.   I told him I was glad he thought that way, but he still needed to practice.

We came home and did homework, then we headed out to the piano teacher’s house.  Peyton took her turn to read while Brandon played. Piano teacher asked Brandon if he liked piano or clarinet more.   He said, “Clarinet!”  After we got home, I headed out to a PTA meeting while Dave took them to make a tow hitch sale from CL.  I got home and all was quiet.  But I learned Brandon didn’t study for his test the way he should have with Dave.  grrrrr…
