Fourth Of July

This morning, we woke up when the kids did, after 7 am, and had a quick breakfast before getting on the road. We wanted to avoid holiday traffic back. Peyton fell asleep in the car almost immediately, even before Dave could stop for his coffee. She had said she was tired because Dave snored most of the night. He even moved places, so I couldn’t kick him to shush him. We woke her up as we parked, and we had another round of breakfast and coffee. We got back on the road, and this time I fell asleep. Brandon was in the third row, so there was no fighting to be had. We got back into town and got Peyton’s recalled furniture emptied and put into the car. We headed up to get our refund, and then headed to eat Vietnamese food closer to home. We came home, and the kids were sent to nap. Well, Dave napped and the kids rested in their rooms. When I went to check on them and they weren’t sleeping, I had them come down. Brandon had more laps to do today, so we walked to the middle school while Dave and Peyton headed in the car. They practiced softball, while Brandon and I did some laps together. After Brandon was done, we went over to join the softball crew. I didn’t want to get hurt at first, so I was hitting balls switching between soft and baseballs while Dave fielded first base while the kids took turns in the infield. We headed home together, with a pitstop for some American apple pie. We had the baseball covered. We came home for some pot pie (left over from a previous Ikeda’s trip). While the pot pie was cooking, Peyton did her piano, while Brandon continued in his book. Both ate while watching the Dodger game. We got them to sleep a bit later than normal, but we got to watch a bit of the 4th of July special. Brandon is a bit nervous with the fireworks, so we got him to bed just after most of the booming was done.

New Adventures

Luckily, the Kao’s agreed to come on an adventure with us. We’d been river-rafting as adults, but had never brought kids before. Dave had texted me if we should go up on Friday. Within a few hours, we’d had a plan for Sunday. Sunday we set alarms for 620 am to get out of the house by 7 am. We left 10 minutes til since we knew we needed to get gas on the way out. Coffee was also in order, but Dave had a particular place in mind at Davis. Michelle shared her position with me, which I’d never done before, and we were not too far off from one another. We met up at our coffee place, then headed to get lunch at Subway. We left earlier, but had another stop at WF to get some last needed supplies before heading to the raft place. The Kao’s got there first, and we got one of the last parking spots. It was definitely crowded! We parked a few cars away from the Kao’s, and each of the mom/kids were with the car, trying to keep the kids entertained without getting run over from the cars circling the parking lot. Soon, the husbands came back and we were off to get our rafts. The rafts came with enough life vests and two oars. We set out in the river, and got ourselves situated. Once we figured out the rowing situation, we tethered the two rafts together. It was nice and pleasant, with only minimal paddling, mostly to keep us straight down river and to avoid obstacles. We did hit some enemy pirate kids who were attacking us with water cannons. But we got ourselves steered away from trouble. The kids (and adults) were looking for more adventure, so we steered toward any rapids that we saw. My kids had to go “potty” during our trip, which meant hanging off the side of the raft and taking care of business. Peyton had performance anxiety and needed two trips to get the job done. At one point, Dave took a breather from paddling, and we ended up running into the tiniest tree in the middle of the river. We were able to push ourselves away, and Dave was back on duty, but not without a few leaves in the raft. The most difficult part of the trip was paddling back to the pick up location. We were to the right, and had to paddle hard left to make it back on shore. We did make it, and we dragged the empty rafts back up on dry land. The total trip was about 2.5 hours. The kids all were instructed to go to the water, in preparation for our shuttle ride back to the start. The kids didn’t quite get subtly of peeing in the river discretely. Peyton hunched over and did her thing, standing within Marcus’ radius of his toileting area. I tried to separate from them all! The ride back was about 15 minutes or so on a school bus. We said goodbye to the Kao’s when we got back to the parking lot. We headed another 20 minutes or so to my mom’s house. We showered up and headed to taste beer at a place my mom wanted to take Dave. We ate dinner at home, and just lounged around until bedtime. We all had plenty of sun, but luckily, no burns for three of us. I made sure to get the tops of our thighs after learning our paddleboard lesson in Hawaii, but Dave had not done it. Despite having board shorts that go down below his knees, he did still have some sun up high as he had hiked them up in the raft. We had even reapplied half way down the river, and now he has a three inch band of red on the tops of his thighs. Now, Dave and Ted want something more thrilling. We’ll see if it’s still kid-friendly, but now we’ve tested out this part of the river for our other friends to join next time. We may even parlay into camping! Go pro pictures to come…

Totally relaxed at grandma’s house.

Impromptu fun

Dave had marinated some pork chops overnight and knew we couldn’t or shouldn’t eat it all. He texted Ted to see if they were free. They were! By this time, Brandon had already gone out to play baseball while Peyton practiced her piano. The Kao’s were in the area so they headed over after they were done with errands.  The kids were excited to have guests over.  It was warm out so they didn’t go outside as much. They played games inside and aside from my set of siblings, they did fine with each other.  Dave grilled up the chops and when it was  time to eat, the kids chose outside.  They ate with minimal distractions while we ate inside.  Soon they finished up and came back in to play more.  The Kao’s didn’t stay long but after they left, we sent the kids to nap.  And nap they did! Peyton slept for over two hours and Brandon was still out when I got up to check on him. I was napping with Peyton so I know she was out. He had 20 to do. But since he headed out on foot to the middle school, I took off three laps.  Then he tried to cut the lap when he thought I wasn’t looking so I added three more.  I walked them with him so it was all fair.  I even gave him an “out” taking off two laps for one run around the track at my pace.  He only took me up on this twice around.  Peyton practiced softball while we did this. After we were done, we headed to get acai bowls and then home for dinner. We’re packing up for tomorrow’s adventures.  On the river! Stay tuned.

Self Defense and Spanish Recap

After taking the Y’s to the airport this morning, I came back to watch Peyton’s self defense class.

Game #3

Dave came home early, and I thought I’d get help with the dental appointments. The dental office asked if we could come in an hour early. That meant cutting into piano time. We did a little piano, then we had to get going for the dental appointment. Dave spent time trying to go find a dry bag to hold our gear for our river rafting trip on Sunday. We went to the game right after. We all went together, but I know now that it was a mistake. Peyton did some worksheets, played in the park, then we watched the game. The team was down by 6 runs in the third; we were the visiting team. Then, we had a great inning, scoring 10 runs. The other team was taunting our team. Brandon came up with two outs, runners on second and third. He found a hole in right field, got most of it, and got around to third base.

I had a phone reminder to meet with Tracy for dinner. I knew I was screwed because I’d forgotten to drive myself. I texted her to let her know the situation, and also, I’d wanted to see this exciting game. I was able to watch it…but in complete suspense.

He had some missed opportunities fielding, which I let him know about, too when he was bragging about his monster hit. He needs to be kept in check, and with the team up by 10-6, they were trying to hold the other team from scoring in 2 more innings. Slowly the team started coming back, though Brandon’s team scored another run. The game came down to the bottom of the 6th, with bases loaded, 11-9. The pitcher walked in a run, and then with 2 outs, the final batter had a full count and swung on the last pitch for a swinging strike. This saved the umpire from having to make a call on a strike or ball. The batter whiffed it. The team and our bleacher section went wild!

During work, my mom had texted that she was back. She helped me get Brandon to practice. I did stop by practice first then told him I’d go home and change then come back to get him and refill water.  He was fine with that. I went home, put the key in the door, and as soon as I did, she came running off the couch with a “Mommmeeeeee!”   My baby was back!  She gave me a huge hug while I stood there still holding my purse and lunch bag.  It was really sweet.  She buried her head into me and just soaked in the hug.  She showed me what she brought back.  Then I showed her the new game and got her dinner ready.  I took off with instructions to shower up by the time i got back. When we got home,  I did help her brush her teeth and did her hair. Then she went to bed.  And was sleeping before 745.  She had transitioned to EST.  I’ll have to upload some of her pictures later.  Tomorrow both kids will be at GA and then have practice.  We’ll have to go get them early from the park so they can make practice on time.  Early morning for me thanks to grandma for dropping them off!
