Cold Outside!

The meterologists have been warning it was going to be cold this morning. I checked my phone, and it was 32 degrees. There was frost everywhere on the cars and on the street, but the true test of how cold it was was Brandon asking me, “Can you get me my sweatshirt?” He had his usual t-shirt and long-sleeved shirt, but he needed one more layer. I’m sure he doesn’t like running around in his jacket, since it’s kind of bulky. Veruca Salt

The other day, while Dave was on his quest to find the 49er happy meal toy, we saw the Build-A-Bear girls’ toys. Peyton looked at them and when I asked her if she had a choice, which would she pick. She immediately pointed to the gingerbread person, and said, “I want that one.” She bypassed the purple one, the pink one, the other cute ones, and kept tapping the display. “I want that one.” She looked so determined. She didn’t throw a fit when they didn’t have that one, but it was just funny how determined she was about “that” particular one. We looked at a few other McD’s to see, and no such luck. She did get a bunny with long, floppy ears along the way, but not the gingerbread man. Dave was out tonight, doing some errands, and he came back with something brown. He opened it up and set it next to the larger gingerbread man that my mom had gotten her. I told him that he was turning her into Veruca Salt. He didn’t know who I was talking about.  I grew up on this movie.  I will push her in myself if she turns out like that 😉

Elfie!

Elfie came back for a visit! He was supposed to return 12/1, but he didn’t arrive until this morning. The kids found him hanging out on the refrigerator door. But when Brandon tried to help himself to milk, he smooshed Elfie’s legs in the door. He touched him trying to save him, though I tried to walk him through closing one door at a time in the right order. I left the kids eating breakfast, with Elfie to watch over them while I got ready. Called Out

While we were eating dinner, Brandon looked over at me and told me he had to tell me something. He was very serious, and he told me, “I got called out in class today.” In my day, being called out was like having someone ask you to fight them. So, I probed and asked him who called him out. He said, “Mrs. Pathogenesis Insulin resistance gives rise to viagra 50 mg hepatic steatosis. He wasn’t giving me a lot to go on, so I kept asking, “What did Mrs Duorah call you out for?” He proceeded to tell us that she read his writing, as it was a good example, and she wanted to share it with the class! I wasn’t clear if he had to go up to the front of the class or not, because I was too busy asking what he wrote about. He said, “The car show.” I asked him what about the car show and what kinds of cars he saw. He said, “Lexus,” and I can’t remember what other makes he mentioned.  He also brought home a “Caught Being Good” for being “safe and responsible”.  He got it for “identifying and fixing a problem”.  I asked him what that meant.  He said, “Oh, well, I saw some gopher holes, so I grabbed a stick, and started to fill them in with dirt so no one would trip in them.”  He must have been having so much fun doing that!  Apparently, he’s not an animal activist.  Poor gophers.

More Good News!

Exactly one week after learning about our Boards results, I found out about the Nike lottery for Washington D.C. I was on the phone with a patient, and was scrolling through my cyber Monday mail trying to delete it. Then, I saw Nike in the sender’s field, and the first sentence, “Your entry to the 2014 Nike Women’s Half…” I had to put the phone down so as not to be totally distracted. My heart was pounding, just like last week, and as soon I finished up with the patient, I turned the phone back around and tried to view the email. It was so small, and I had to scroll back and forth to get the gist of it. Basically, it said we got in! I texted Joyce, Tina, and Suong to check and see if they got the email, too. We registered as a group, so technically, if one of us got in, then we all did. But I wanted confirmation. Joyce didn’t get the text, but her credit card was charged, which is another way to verify that we were accepted. Finally, Suong confirmed and then Tina, who was already off work by then. Tina was so eager, having looked up tickets last year when we were accepted last-minute, and she booked her flight. I hopped on the same flight, and then Tina called the hotel to reserve 3 nights in April. Only later did Dave help with researching flights and found a non-stop, but I felt better about going together with Tina on her flight. We were all so excited, even though Tina has a full marathon coming up this weekend. It gave me my motivation to run tonight, since it’s been awhile. I got two miles in under 20 minutes, and I was happy with that. I’ll have to re-do my training schedule with April 27th in mind. I was reminded today by Kathy that it’s a good thing that we don’t have to take the boards again, as they, too, would have been in April. I wasn’t able to focus 100% on Nike in October because I had boards to contend with, so no there is no excuse!

HATE school?

Peyton was standing outside my room this morning, after coming in to use the potty. It was eerie, but since it was almost wake-up time, I told her to come over. I asked her what she was doing, and she said, “I don’t know.” I’m not sure she was totally awake. Then, we were talking about getting ready for school, and she told me, “NO, I don’t want to, because I HATE school.” I told her she didn’t hate it on Wednesday. So, I prompted and said, “Do you not like it because you will miss me?” She said, “Yes.” So, I told her the plan, that was our “usual” plan, and she got over it. She said, “I learned it in school.” I reinforced how much she knew from school, and that she had to practice for their Christmas recital this Friday. And we can’t do that at home, as she needs her friends there to rehearse. She was totally fine when we got to school, and she got to sit in her spot.

DISH!

We were to meet up with the Kao’s at 9 am at the dish. It’s a 3.2-3.3 (the website says 3.3) loop. I had geared up with water, apple chips, a cut up persimmon and some grapes. We left the house late, but managed to arrive at the meeting spot 5 minutes after 9 am. We met up with Michelle and the kids while Ted parked the car. We started our ascent, and the kids were happily walking, giggling, and wasting too much energy. We warned them that they had to conserve. The last time we did the dish was with the double stroller and Josephine who was training for a run. That was at least 2-3 years ago, and both kids were happy to be in the stroller. Dave, not so much, as he pushed the thing everywhere. This time, no strollers were to be found. I’d asked Peyton ahead of time if she was going to hold Mckayla’s hand. She told me, “No, I’m just going to hold your hand.” At least she walked alongside Mckalya, who tried to grab her hand. Peyton was evasive, and she didn’t say anything, but didn’t hold her hand either. At one point, the three older kids were pretty far ahead of us, while Michelle and I walked and talked together, then Dave, and then Marcus and Ted. When we got to the top, the kids wanted water. I didn’t give our kids water until Ted arrived with Mckayla and Marcus’ water. We cheered Marcus on as he got to the top, though he wouldn’t high five me 🙂
We stopped for a little water break, and some persimmons to go. Marcus had a good second half, while I half-dragged Peyton. I got her moving with the prospect of more apple chips when we got up to the second hill. She made it all by herself, with lots of encouragement. We took the kids’ minds off the walk by talking about their mutual love of Disney rides and listening to Disney songs on the phone. Peyton struggled the last half-block back to the car, but we told her we’d be going to lunch.
Marcus wanted Brandon to read to him, and Mckayla shared her coloring with Peyton, so that helped determined our seating arrangement.  Everyone was hungry, and the kids all ate nicely.  When they were done, they went back to reading, playing and coloring together.  We said goodbye, and then headed home for a nap.  Now, we’re going to get ready for the week to start. It’s officially December!

Mochi Making

Dave’s coworker invited us over to make mochi with her family. Brandon didn’t want to leave my mom’s house the night before, so he got to stay overnight. Peyton didn’t mind at all, and she happily came home with us. I asked her if she wanted to stay with Grandma or Mommy and Daddy. She replied, “Mommy!” She got to stay up a little bit and watch the UCLA basketball game, but when she got loopy, we sent her to bed. We woke up early on Saturday and drove up to BSK. It’s a restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch only, and usually by 9 am, we were told there was about a 45 minute wait. I called on the way up there, as it was about 9 am, and they said the same thing, about 30-45 minutes. When we got there, Dave dropped me off first, then I went to put our name down. Dave and Peyton came 2 minutes later, and then they told us the table was almost ready! It was great, since we hadn’t eaten anything yet, and Peyton would start to complain. We ordered Peyton a granola with yogurt, while we split chicken and waffles and corn beef hash. It was good, but filling! We were so hungry, I didn’t take pictures of it 🙂 Peyton liked her granola and yogurt after I put a dollop of homemade jam on it. The yogurt was plain, and she doesn’t like it like Brandon does. After we finished up breakfast, we headed over to the house. The invitation was to stop by at any time from 10 am – 4pm. We were there by twenty minutes after 10 am, and there were just a few people besides family there. They had already started making mochi about an hour before. Peyton was shy of course, but she warned up a bit when we went to go shoot baskets in the backyard with Dave. Then, Dave got his hands in the mochi and started to shape it like the others. I stayed with Peyton at a table nearby with the coloring books and workbooks I’d brought to keep her company. We stayed a few hours, tried to eat lunch, but were still too full for the most part. Then, we headed back to pick Brandon up. Peyton didn’t sleep like I thought she would, but instead stayed awake for the new span of the bridge. We picked up Brandon, then headed home to watch the UCLA football game! Dave wasn’t really able to watch fully, but at least the outcome was desirable. The kids went down early, since we’re trying to get them back on schedule. I told them they’d need their rest for the activity we were doing tomorrow.
