Saturday

After basketball, Brandon and Dave headed out to Josh’s birthday party. Brandon and Josh go way back, friends since kindergarten, as they were in the same class, and last year, too. Peyton and I headed to nap. I’d gone out to run 5 miles in the drizzly morning as soon as I was awoken by kids this morning, so I was beat. She napped for awhile upstairs in her room, then came down and hung out with me to nap some more. When we’d both had enough, we headed out to the library. We returned books and got more. Peyton picked out a goosebumps for Brandon, while I got him a pokemon one. After the library, we went to get groceries, gas and then in search of tofu-fa.  There’s a place by the kids’ first school that Dave told me about. He’d gotten food there before, but I only knew of the general strip mall, not the specific store. We headed inside to the food court-type setup. I didn’t see it, so I decided to keep walking down the storefronts. I was distracted by a music store hoping to find more kid-friendly piano books. Peyton found the next in our series, and I found the type of teaching I learned growing up.  Five books later, we headed out the door.  We kept walking, then I went into a small shop. As soon as we entered, Peyton said, “Oh, I’ve been here with Daddy before!”  Yay, I’d found it. I should’ve asked Peyton in the first place! It never occurred to me, and I never told her what I was looking for. She even said, “Yeah, that’s the man that was there before, too!”  So we got our tofu and headed out. We got home a little after 5, and Dave said Brandon’s friend’s mom had called to ask if Brandon was free. He had just woken up from his nap, since he was exhausted from the game and birthday party, which had trampolines.  Soon, his friend picked him up and headed out for dinner and a playdate. With just one kid, we headed out, too!  Peyton knew she couldn’t have dessert for sneaking candy at Valentine’s, but she was happy to be with us. She did miss Brandon, but not like last time.  We got home before Brandon, and he was promptly returned by 7:45. He told us he ate pasta and bread. Then he asked me if he could eat some carrots.  I asked if he had veggies and he said no. I asked if there were veggies and he said he declined salad. I was surprised! He likes salad!  Apparently he only likes it when we’re around and started to feel guilty about it. He also said he had butter on his bread. I don’t think his friends will like coming here to eat. :).  Dave was just showing them a little Star Wars (finally) before bedtime for both. We have another fun-filled and packed day tomorrow!

Chess Tourney

Yesterday, Dave went to pick Brandon up at CDC around 4 pm to take him to the chess tournament. He’d had chess club earlier in the day, but the tourney was to start after the second chess club session ended at 345 pm. This was the school’s first school-wide tourney. The last one Brandon participated in was open to all schools. He wanted to join in, so we did sign him up. No parents were allowed inside, so Dave left to go get a birthday present for Brandon’s friend’s birthday today. He came back about 1.5 hours later. Peyton was asleep at home with me, since she had missed naptime with the field trip and piano. They came home a little after 6 pm, and Brandon was carrying a tall trophy. I’m not sure how many participants were there, but Dave thought around 15 or so. Brandon did name a few kids’ names, and they were all his friends. Glad there’s no hard feelings amongst the kids who have to compete in chess, and also in baseball and basketball. We did go out to eat, but not to get him fries. We ate Korean, and he was just as happy about that.

AR Update

Brandon’s had some difficulty with reading comprehension tests. He likes to read books, but doesn’t necessarily read them for comprehension. Sometimes he bites off more than he can chew with these mystery books. But when it comes down to taking tests online for comprehension, he’ll get 58-80% on books like “Clifford”. Really?! I get emailed whenever he takes a test, so I can look up the book and see how difficult it is. I got an email this week that said:

Dear Robyn,
Brandon took an Accelerated Reader Reading Practice Quiz today.

Typically, he’s earned 0.5 points at a time, and that’s only if he’s getting 100% for an easier book. The points are earned based on reading level as well as percentage right on the quiz. 2.7 is a LOT of points at one time, so I looked up the book. It’s a 3 on the AR, equivalent to 3rd grade, and it’s a series that appeals to 4-8th graders. It’s 130 pages, while books like Clifford are at best 15-20 with big pictures, at that. I did tell him, as I always do, that I’m able to look up books that he’s reading. I told him what a great job he did, and he said he’d read it in class all week, then took the quiz. He read those books last year, but then he’d get scared doing so. He’s recently checked out another. I think he’s motivated, as he recently surpassed the 10 point mark. He gets a leaf up on the reading tree at school, but more importantly, he gets a free mini pan pizza. He’s hooked now.
