Day Three

This morning, I set the alarm for 830.  I’d purchased tickets for the hop on and hop off bus, and it included a ticket to the Boston Tea party museum close to our hotel.  That opened at ten so I wanted to be in early to avoid the crowds. We were going to eat at Dunkin Donuts but when we went there, the power was out! I didn’t mind and our plan B was back to Flour.  I got steel cut oatmeal with nuts and blueberries while Peyton wanted the French toast and bacon.  The meal was much heartier and filling than donuts would have been.  I’d forgotten to order her milk, so I gave her money to order herself.  She hemmed and hawed and finally decided she didn’t want any.  She didn’t want to I have to leave her name.  I told her to use mine. She really wanted it, I know. Finally she caught a break in the line and went to order.  She proudly returned with her cup of kids milk. I reminded her eventually she will have to order her own food!

We returned to the museum by 1025 am and were in the 1030 show time. We started right away and were given two characters/real names of those in attendance on that fateful night. Peyton was my apprentice and I was some coor.  She started in the aisle to see better.  The crowd was pumped up to be true patriots, angry at the crown.  Some were asked to speak up from the cue cards.  Two in particular were younger girls who read from the cards.  Peyton freaked out and went to my other side, away from the aisle. She whispered she didn’t want to speak aloud.  I assured her she had no speaking part.  The woman who was our tour guide was really good at her part!! She remembered most of the characters and which guests she’d  given each character.  We were given our disguises; they were feathers, which depicted the costumes the colonists used to avoid detection. They dressed up as native Americans so as not to be caught as unloyal.  After the introduction, we were led to the ship.  The kids were invited to dump tea into the harbor and we toured the replica boat, the brig Beaver. Peyton waited until the coast was clear and no one was watching. Clandestine dumping for sure. I took video which I’ll upload later.  The opposite boat was the Eleanor.  The Dartmouth wasn’t in port.  We saw the captain’s quarters, the tight cargo load area, and learned more about the night.  We headed on dock again for more history before we were ushered into the movie theater for another lesson from the women’s perspective.  It was a conversation about the loyalists and the colonists.  Then, the movie went out but the sound kept going.  The emergency lights came on. The docent looked a bit confused, and we were informed that we had to go back to the street to evacuate the museum.  We headed out and awaited more information. They stalled by spouting out more information. It was fascinating though Peyton was just hot. I had her in the shade and she was okay with her water.  After about thirty minutes of waiting around, being offered a refund, though our tour was included in our trolley ticket, the lights went on. We were invited back to the same spot. Peyton enjoyed the AC.   We then headed to another movie room with a story about a surviving box from the tea party. It was recovered mostly intact from the harbor. The family who kept it donated it to the museum.  It is housed in a glass case which spins around to tell its story.  Then we were shown a final movie about the battle of Lexington and Minute men. It was a 4-d effect as puffs of air shot out at us every time a musket fired.  We weren’t able to take photos in this area.  We finished off with a trip to the gift shop and potty break.  From there, we hopped onto the trolley.  We went a few stops before starting at the beginning. We had to change trolleys, but it gave us a chance to walk around back at Faneuil hall. We picked up a copy of Make Way For Ducklings, after I wasn’t able to find the hardcover on Amazon. She declined some chowder, saying she wasn’t hungry.  So we got back on the trolley to take a lap.  She didn’t want to get off as she was tired.  She napped while I plotted my course.  We had only walked a bit of the freedom trail, so I wanted to climb Bunker Hill Monument. We started the tour at 2 and didn’t make it all the way around until almost four.  The monument had its last climb at 430, closing at 5.  The last pick up stop was 5 so we were running short on time, almost the same amount of time lost with the power outage! We made it off the stop at 415 pm. We hiked uphill about 0.5 miles then headed up the 294 stairs to the top.  It was a tight spiral staircase.  She was all energized from her nap so she bounded up the stairs.  The stair depth was pretty impressive.  At least they were even.  But it was narrow. Maybe only two of us could have fit widthwise maybe not even that.  When people came down, we’d stop and let them by.  The rail was only on the right hand side going down. We held on to the wall/center column going up.  I was wearing flip flops today since my shoes were still wet from yesterday. There were stair markers along the way to keep us motivated.  It was a bit stuffy, and I was starting to sweat.  We finally made it to the top.  There was a grill gate on the center of the column. You could see.  All.  The.  Way.  Down.  And she kept walking RIGHT over the top of it!! I concentrated on taking pictures at each Cardinal direction. It was nice and breezy up there as the center column brought air from below while each of the four windows had its own cross breeze.  After taking our pictures, we headed back down.  I had Peyton stay behind me, but there were some kids were messing around behind us. I didn’t want to let them pass us as there were still people coming up.  But I took it slowly but surely.  We made it down and saw daylight again. My quads were burning!! After she got down the steps, Peyton said, “My leg muscles are stronger now!”   We hiked back downhill to get our trolley.  I asked her if she had to go potty or if she could hold it.  She said she didn’t need to go. THere was a trolley there right then, and it was 445 pm. I didn’t know if I could find a potty, and I didn’t want to risk missing the trolley. I believed her and boarded the trolley.  It was Bailey, the same driver as before! We went through all the rest of stops again. Ours was three and we needed to get to 16.  One by one, people got off.  Peyton and later, I, fell asleep.  I woke up when I heard the ladies in front of us talking about us.  Hey asked me where I was going, I guess making sure we didn’t miss our stop.  I told them it was our second trip around.  And since we had Bailey, we had heard the same spiel. We got to stop 15 and everyone got off!   He said, “And then there was one!”  Then Peyton popped up! He said, ” Oh I didn’t see your friend there!”  He asked me where we were going.  I told him our stop. He narrated for us for the rest of our journey.  We finally arrived, Peyton tipped him and we headed back to our hotel.  Dave was already home   We hung out for a few minutes to change and freshen up and headed to dinner.  We went to another Italian place.  We ordered soft shell crab, pasta and favs beans for Peyton, and polenta with oxtail for Dave.  It was all yummy.  Peyton wanted spaghetti but im happy that she went out of her comfort zone and agreed to share with us.  She liked our dishes, too, eating a few legs.  And a few bites of Dave’s polenta.  After dinner, we headed a mile out to the Omni hotel for the Boston cream pie that was first created there. It was yummier than last night’s I thought. We also shared the key lime pie. We walked the mile back and took an unplanned detour through fanueil hall.  Dave didn’t think I knew what I was talking about, but I’d been by there at least three times today. He’d taken a wrong turn somewhere.  In any case, I register my 10,000 plus steps for the day. It was a nice evening out with plenty of tourists or conventioneers.  Peyton was able to keep up with us despite wearing flip flops.  The sugar helped her out.  We are back now all showered up and feeling good.

We were wrapping up our day recounting to Dave what we did.  Bailey had asked which other drivers we had. Peyton didn’t answer at the time, but told me, “Remember, her name is Jewels! And if we didn’t like her, her name was Ruby.”  He other guy she forgot was Dallas. But she remembered that she was our first driver, over eight hours before!

Day two

Dave woke up and headed out early this morning.  It didn’t bother Peyton at all, and I went back to sleep, too.  I didn’t get up again until my pillow fell off the bed which woke Peyton.  I asked her what time it was.  She answered, “11:38”.  What?! Even by California standards, that’s a late morning!  We got up and ready and went to the local pastry shop.  We ordered brunch – a kids sandwich, one slice of French toast, bacon slice, parfait and the sweet bun Dave mentioned was good there.  We finished everything but the bun, which we took to go.  We split the kids sandwich and toast, and it was plenty.  Now that she was fueled, we returned for the swan boats.  It was hot but we made it. We went to the public library and browsed the Amercian Revolution display.   We took some pictures, took a potty break and browsed at the study area.  Her comment on this was:

Looks like in Monsters University where they are tryin to get the flag.  She noticed it was very quiet and used her inside voice.

Her comment on this was:

“Looks like the stairs and books like in Belle”

After that we took a detour to shop. She didn’t mind since it was 100% air conditioned.  We shopped for bags and I contemplated while we headed back to the hotel.  On our way back through the park, the weather was turning on us.  We heard lightning and thunder far away, then closer.  Then saw people running.  There was a creepy guy behind us talking to himself, so we ran too. Then there was one chunk of hail that fell.  No rain just hail.

One piece of hail.  So cute.  Many, not so much.  A few hit my head, and it was not pleasant.

Only the rain caught up to us. And then the deluge.

I struggled under a tree to get the poncho out for her.  This is looking back at the tree…

I was shivering while trying to keep my phone dry.  It’s the lifeline for us to get around. I got her situated then gusts of wind blew sheets of rain toward us.  I got my poncho out to cover myself.  We ran under the awning of a theater before gathering ourselves.  I tried to wait it out but as we were getting colder, I hailed an uber.  But I had to update my app.  Figures.  There were tons of police driving by with sirens blaring.  The uber guy showed up and we had to jaywalk in front of a police car to get there.  I think the cop was not going to do anything given the circumstances.  We headed home, a mere mile, but the driver’s app was messed up. I had to navigate him around using my phone. Apple vs Samsung.  Geez.  While we made our way home, Peyton asked, “What was the quartz that fell from the sky?”  It felt like it as it pelted us on its way down. I don’t think she’s ever seen hail before. We arrived back to the hotel and squeaked our way home.  We showered and got warm and cozy. I can tell Dave had been home as the pile of wet laundry gave him away.  Here are the rest of our photos from today.

We’re waiting for Dave for dinner now.

Ice skating and camping

The girls wrapped up their ice skating session. Here are the pictures michelle took upon her arrival Friday.  I was there just after

I was there earlier in the day but was asked to leave by my kid.  I didn’t take a picture since they were still in the middle of their lesson. But I got their videos.  After that, we picked Brandon up.  Both were showered up as was I to get ready for camping. We waited for Dave to get home, then we headed out for dinner at Ike’s sandwiches. We bought three sandwiches for four of us. We were meeting up with theresa and Martin after making “The Climb”.  No joke of a hill.  We had lots of gear, and we started up the mountain. The kids each had something to carry – their backpacks and another bag for each.  I was carrying things up when I came upon a man with a cart.  I was doing him the favor of not having to haul it back down. Dave struggled with his own wagon.  We had to drop weight along the route as we were too ambitious.  We had the kids going back and forth picking up things along the route.  We set up shop in about an hour and a half meeting theresa and Martin along the way. I was soaked in my one sweat by the time we were done.  I wasted my shower! And because of it, I was also getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.  I layered up on clothes and sprays, lotions and the bracelet. The majority of the damage had been done.  They were sneaky and ate between my knuckles!! The kids fared better fortunately. We ate while theresa and Martin made their food which was surprisingly yummy!!  Peyton wanted their stroganoff more than her own sandwich!! We gathered around the fire until Peyton asked to go to bed.  She was tired. Brandon stayed up a bit later but a tip in his chair and a bonk on his head sent him to bed early, too. He didn’t argue when we suggested it after Peyton was asleep. It made things easier though. He was quite calm by then.  I couldn’t sleep that night well because the three of them slept with a blow up pillow. It squeaked every time they moved. The kids did not. But Dave couldn’t sleep. And kept tossing and turning. I mean squeaking and squeaking. When Brandon woke up the next morning, he said he still had a headache.

I’d warned him about tipping in the chair even before it happened but he never listens to my warnings.  We ate breakfast and then Martin and theresa joined us for their biscuits and gravy meal. That was yummy too! Peyton ate some eggs that Dave pealed for her.  As she ate, I heard crunching noises.  I asked her, “Shell?”   She quietly nodded. Poor thing! Brandon was given a knife to whittle a stick then helped Dave with some firewood to bring up.  I was scared he’d lose a digit or slice his knee.  Finally, he finished and I did a count.  Phew nothing lost. We waited for our next guests, The Brown’s to arrive.  We hung out with L and C to give them lunch while their parents unpacked the car.  They wouldn’t eat until their parents came back. I think they didn’t want food from strangers but were too polite to tell us that.  C told us, “I like cold food.”  They both told us they were hungry. They passed the stranger test at least!!  We enjoyed the brown rice spam musubi and cookies Bonnie made.

Both Theresa and Dave brought hot dogs for Bonnie and both bought Hawaiian buns.  That made me happy!! We all enjoyed lunch before kathy and Chris arrived with the kids. They had three carts and three of them pushing! Ian was a pusher and definitely pushed his weight’s worth!!  He then became babysitter for the younger kids.  He helped show Brandon more tricks in the kendama as well as fixed his broken one from the night before. Chris told Brandon, “Ian is the Doc Mcstuffins of kendamas!”  So true. He’s also the kid whisperer.  After the kaos arrived, the whole gang was there!! Everyone had smiles on their faces, which I was worried about because of the hike. Dave had told me the night before to not talk to him while he pushed the cart uphill.  Bonnie had her scavenger hunt all prepped and ready to go. The kids were paired up let loose about the camp site.  It was cute to see them working together.  Food was being prepped and cooked for dinner. It was still early but better to do it before hunger sets in and kids like mine become “hangry”.

Peyton set up “her tent” up high for her and Mckayla. Kira didn’t want to join them but didn’t mind being next door neighbors.  It had to be situated a bit but it worked out.

Dinner was a hit with Korean short ribs, pork chops and green beans. We had more Hawaiian bread and fruit, too.  We also had a s’more assembly line that chris put together.  He also used this power torch!! Luckily his eyebrows and lashes survived.

The kids played with their toys from Bonnie and even had a light show going. Depending on shutter speed, some pretty cool light pictures were taken!  We had a campfire going again and the kids were put to bed about the time the lights went out.  Now it was a matter of put to bed versus asleep.  Especially the two girls on top.  They had a few potty runs only because I was afraid of Peyton getting up to potty in the middle of the night.  Did I mention the portapotties that the park used to save water?! Ick.  Dave went to bed before ten. He didn’t want to be too tired for his flight.  I went to sleep by eleven. Apparently the girls didn’t until midnight!! Our kathy listened to them next door.  Both were in okay spirits in the morning! They were up by seven or so. I was picking up the tent while Peyton asked me to go potty with her. We all cleaned up the site early because we knew we had to get going early. And going down in shifts and together would be helpful. After breakfast and packing up and our requisite photo (take two from the previous night) we headed downhill.  Three groups got down in one haul.  Chris helped me with our wagon while I held his stuff then he was going to return the carts uphill to get the rest of their stuff.  We headed out behind the Kaos. Peyton was melting down slowly but surely so I got her to take a much-needed shower then an even more-needed nap.  She was out cold even while Dave packed up and left.  Brandon was sweet and told me at drop off “have a nice trip!” She woke up and had no clue where daddy was. We locked up a few hours later and went to my parents’. I didn’t have time for my usual post-camp nap as I did two loads of laundry along with sorting.  Next year will be our fifth camping anniversary and we’re already looking forward to it. We’ll see where our adventures to us.

First Day

Our travel day wasn’t too bad. My mom and Brandon dropped us off at the airport at 730 and we had four hours to kill before our flight. We had tickets to the red carpet club but we had to go through security twice as a result.  We went through to get to the club. Peyton wasn’t impressed with the food but ate a light dinner there.  We brushed our teeth there then after a couple of hours, checked out and returned to our side of the international terminal. We had an hour on that side and played crazy rights and had her spell and read some.  Once on the plane, the flight was only three plus hours.  Not long enough to fully sleep. Luckily, we had a thin girl sitting in the window seat, while Peyton took middle and I took the aisle.  She laid out across her seat and mine. We arrived in Minneapolis and deplaned at H1.  Then we walked over to H4 to look at the terminal screen only to find out that we were right back on H1. I gave her the choice of breakfast or going back to sit on our gate. We checked a bag through to get priority boarding since we were going to our final destination.  I didn’t want to risk losing the bag in the first leg since all our clothes were packed together in one bag.  We got on this time as window and center seats.  A group with Down’s syndrome came on and Peyton started to stare.  One girl sat down next to me.  I hesitated starting to converse since I wanted to sleep the flight.  She had a chocolate bar and Peyton was staring at that for awhile. Once we were airborn, both of us slept.  I didn’t sleep much the first flight, even though it was dark since I didn’t want her kicking the girl.  But because she had the plane wall, I slept fine even though it was super bright out. We landed and took the opportunity for a potty run without the bag since we went before picking it up at the carousel. Dave told me the cab ride was almost thirty dollars the night before.  But it may be more because of traffic.  Or there was public transportation to a station near our hotel.  But it required a bit more brain power. I decided to try the latter.  One can buy a weeklong subway pass for $19.  Peyton is free because she is a kid.  So I bought my pass and headed out after getting our bag. I’m not one to use public transportation but I’ve been duped in cabs too. Especially since Peyton would be without a car seat.  We jumped on the bus that would take us to our station. One family did the same and got off at the first stop. They later boarded again another so to later.  They walked from the front to the back of the same building they said. So they realized their oops by seeing us sitting in the same seats.  Peyton recognized them, too since they had tween aged girls. We finally made it to our stop. We went to look at the map and couldn’t find our “stop”.  I then googled it and was informed I needed to go above ground.  From there, we were less than a half mile away.  No problem!! Peyton was getting hot and bothered so I breezed by the food trucks that were all parked near the grassy square.  I checked into the hotel, dropped off our stuff and sun blocked us.  It took us awhile to head out again, about an hour and that translated to a long wait for us. Each truck had anywhere from 10-30 people in line.  All business types.  We ended up finding a not as crowded one closer to the hotel.  It was a Vietnamese inspired so Peyton wanted soup noodles.  It was about 85 degrees out so I convinced her to get a noodle salad.  I got a tofu pineapple curry over salad. We took it back to the room and ate. It was so yummy! And spicy.  So glad she didn’t get it.  Her pork was yummy, too.  I told her to take a nap and then we’d head out to explore.  I set the alarm for 1.5 hours and she blew through that.  It ended up being more like two hours.  So we headed in search of Faneuil hall. It was less than a mile away.  No problem!! She whined a bit but I had her help me navigate and look for streets.  We made it there and looked at the public market, too.  We went to the Make Way for Ducklings children’s book store.  We found some signed copies of books, two for B and two for P.  They are books in a series that they are both aware.  From there, she wanted to go home.  But I convinced her to go to the “real” make way for ducklings. It is a statue in the park. It was another mile or so away.  More whining but then a cold bottle of water took care of that.  Also having her carry her own camera.  We stopped to take pictures along the way then suddenly, we were there!  We stopped for pictures and also saw the swan boats.  We were too late for a ride but at least we know where to go back to catch the ride.  We headed back to the hotel for yet another mile walk. As we arrived at the subway station entrance where we started this morning, she knew.  “we’re almost home!!”   I was surprised she learned our area so quickly. We saw only one food truck: “Cookie Monstah”. I asked the man if he’d be there longer. He said he was closing soon since he was running out of some items.  I made the game time decision to get it now.  We’d try to save Dave some.  Peyton wanted ice cream and one cookie. I got a cookie sandwich. She got a sugar cookie and Milky Way ice cream while i picked the coffee Oreo and PB and salted caramel cookies.  It was supposed to come on two chocolate cookies but they ran out. We ate and walked the few blocks back. While she was eating, she exclaimed, “Wow, this is delicious!!”   We arrived at the hotel around 6.  Neither of us could finish our cookies!! We were overcome by the cookie monstah!!  Dave wasn’t back yet so we headed down to the pool. I told Peyton she needed to swim eight laps.  When we checked the pool earlier no one was there.  Now only one kid and mom were there.  It was a lap pool that was 3-4 feet deep.  I ended up swimming a few laps with her.  When Dave arrived, I had him time us.  Peyton’s fastest was 23 seconds.  I clocked in at 17 but her technique is still much better.  We got out by 7 and showered up. We headed out for dinner with Danielle. They had chowder and a salad while I had the lobster roll. Peyton had a corn dog and a salad. She couldn’t finish.  I told her we couldn’t have dessert but her meal came with it. I asked the server to bring her the fruit instead.  Peyton reminded me, “Because we cannot have any more dessert today.” She brought out the fruit – blueberries and mango squares.  Blueberries and other berries are plentiful in the northeastern coast per our dining partner from NJ. She ate all those with some sharing to help.  Then we hung out at the hotel bar to have Dave and Danielle eat their dessert.  They had a rhubarb tart with honey ice cream.  After they were done, we headed upstairs.  But she is not tired now. Though she is yawning which is a good sign. It may rain tomorrow so we’ll have to plan our events accordingly. We had a good day considering how tired we started out.
