Tourney Recap

Last Friday, Brandon had basketball clinic, while we brought Peyton to practice. We ended up spending 1.5 out of the 2 hours of clinic just on her batting and fielding. Dave had asked me to hit grounders to her, while he played first base, so she could practice the throw to first. He was getting frustrated with me for not hitting them directly to her, hitting too far out of her range, or not hitting hard enough to her. I commented that he was lucky I was making contact with the ball more than 75% of the time! And that I’d like him to practice piano with her in an attempt to make her better. Peyton chuckled at that. We went back to pick up Brandon from clinic (we were at a different part of the high school). The recruiter for the Asian league competitive team talked to Dave, this coming off the 4 night basketball camp that she just wrapped up earlier that week. He was talking to Dave about the upcoming team, which doesn’t even start until 6th grade! I think they are concerned about Peyton’s preference for softball, but otherwise, they offered her a spot on the team, one of three of the eight rising fourth graders that had come out earlier in the week. We talked about that in the car, while the kids were nodding off. We drove to my mom’s right after the clinic, as Peyton had a softball tourney in Sacramento. We arrived late Friday night, and my mom had accommodations all ready, both rooms were prepped upstairs. Brandon had his own room, while Peyton was going to take the trundle in the other room, with the full bed for Dave and me just above the trundle. While Dave was showering, Peyton was tossing and turning in the trundle, saying it was uncomfortable. She told me she was going to come up with me, and I told her she’d better do that before Dave was done. She scampered up to me, and was almost asleep when Dave came out and saw what was going on. She was half in her uniform, as we were to get up by 8 am to leave by 9 am. My mom had breakfast for us, and we all left together by just before 9. We got to the field in time, and we were all ready for hot weather ahead for the day. My mom picked the HOTTEST tournament to date this year to join us. One of the teammate’s moms asked if that was my mom, and she told me, “She is BEAUTIFUL!” I had introduced my mom to some but not all of the teammates/parents. She hung out with Brandon in the shade for the first game, then we ate lunch together in between games 2 and 3. After game 3, we headed back to the brewery that she had won a silent auction beer tasting for four. Three of us tasted, while the kids had cold root beer. It was refreshing! The kids played Uno, while we hung out until our dinner reservation. My mom made a reservation at Dingus McGee’s. Dingus is a name that the kids had been calling each other lately, as in “dodo”. The whole time we were at the restaurant, she was laughing at the mention of it. The kids shared a fettuccine alfredo with chicken and calamari, while I had a salad, my mom had fish and chips and Dave had prime rib. We ended dinner after sunset and with a chocolate lava cake paired with a candle, and we went home and showered up for the next day. Unfortunately, the next day’s field was further away, though on our way home. So, we had to get up by 515 am, to get out the door by 545 am, and then got coffee and to the field by 7 am. Dave made a stop for coffee, and I was going to go with him, though he pointed to the backseat, Peyton was still asleep. She fell asleep when we got to the freeway from my mom’s. I had previously told me mom she didn’t have to go with us, since it was about 1 hour from her house. Her immediate response, after sitting in the sun for almost 8 hours the day before, “No SH*@!” Because Brandon was hanging on her, she quickly changed it to, “I mean, NO KIDDING.” She did get up to help us out of the car. The first game on Sunday was much better than the previous day’s games. We ended up winning by 6-7 runs, with Peyton driving in 2 of those runs on a double.

I updated my mom while the game was in progress.

Then, the next game wasn’t until 1230pm. The girls had a big break, so they busted out Uno cards, and almost all of them participated in the game. They all stayed in the shade, ate lunch, and relaxed in between games, then came back out to play at 1230 pm. They got off to an early lead up by 5 runs! Then, somehow the momentum shifted, and slowly runs were given up. Later, the other team came up to tie the game, sending the game into an international tie breaker. Initially, they had called Peyton to go run from second, but later, swapped her out for the player that was last batted out. It was stressful, and things didn’t go the way we were hoping. Partially, the team parents were happy to leave the field by 2 pm, as opposed to staying until the 330 pm game, but also, we were hoping the girls would find a way to pull out the win! We drove the rest of the way home, got showered up, and felt the temperature drop about 25 degrees, as it was about 75 here at home. Dave found tickets to the Incredibles 2, and we headed to the movies! We’re trying to live it up during our summer break. I took Monday off, so I wasn’t worried about having to wake them up. They did get out of the house by 830 am, and I watched their swim lessons, one at a time. I then walked back home, leaving my car there, so I could build in exercise. I cleaned up, did 3 loads of laundry, and also studied for my recertification and completed a packet from that. I went to pick the kids up, and came home to do their work. Dave came home, and we all went back out on the field to hit with the kids. Brandon got two new bats for the upcoming season, so he was testing them out. We went to Dicks and saw one of Peyton’s teammates there! We met up for dinner after their errands

Tuesday, we did the same thing, but this time it was after I worked all day. She’s trying to get ready for the next two weekends, when they have tourneys in South SJ and in Tahoe. Then the “season” will come to an end. The kids got to talk to their cousins, Uncle Jeff and Auntie Meg, for Abby’s bday. We tried on Monday, but we got to her too late, and she was already asleep. We aren’t able to meet up with them this summer, as we have in years past, as our next free weekend is Labor day weekend, and they will be back home by then.

Here are the pictures from the weekend:

Tourney of Champions

Brandon’s team won their division, beating a coach that Brandon had had in all stars a few years ago. He’s always been a thorn in Dave’s side, though the coach is rather tame against Dave. But the coach is a hot head, and they had to beat a bunch of friends that are mostly a year younger. They had played them throughout the season, and finally, last Wednesday, they won their game. It was a double elimination tourney, so they put the final dagger in their season last week. That meant Brandon’s team got to represent the league in district play. Their first game was Thursday, but Peyton had practice. Based on Dave’s string of texts, I thought they lost. Peyton and I ate dinner at in and out, and we saw Brandon’s teammate’s sister, who told me they won! So, we went over to where the boys were, as they were headed back after trying to have dinner close to where they won. But SCU had just let out for the summer, so the hang out was crowded with college kids. The team hung out at the local joint. While we were there, we saw Peyton’s coach’s coworkers, as identified by Brandon’s coach, who also works with them. We tried to get Peyton to take a picture with them, but she wouldn’t. We tried to bribe her, and she declined; she wouldn’t budge. Brandon agreed to take a photo with her. Soon after, the girls’ softball team comprised of girls that Peyton played last year, when she was playing up. They are all Brandon’s age, and they were there to hang out, too. So we got a picture with her, which was more of a willing picture, with no bribes involved. Dave was excited to beat the league where one of Brandon’s travel team coach coaches (one of the coaches that has daddy ball issues). Round 2 of the redemption series, after beating the coach within our league.

Today, the second round of the TOCs was being played. Dave went to work in the morning, waking Peyton up by 630 am. She crawled into bed seemingly wide awake. I entertained her awareness for thirty minutes or so, playing my phone games before realizing I’d be too tired if I gave in. Soon, I heard the door slam shut. It was 830 and Peyton had fallen back asleep. The fam wasn’t until 130 so we had time to play piano and math for a bit. My dad, a Yankee fan, came down to watch, wearing Yankees gear. We went early, and while Dave and Brandon warmed up, we walked to get boba and lunch. Peyton was happy to chit chat, to the point I had to hurry her so we could go back to the game. We made it back for the introductions, announcements and national anthem. They were playing at the home field of yet more of Brandon’s teammates. In fact, the one calling out the players’ names was one of his travel teammates.

Here are the boys’ introductions:
The team we were playing today had 3 of the travel teammates, with another coach with a kid on the travel team, who is also vying for Brandon’s spot. Dave wanted to beat them, as well, to make a statement.

The team dropped 5 runs in the first inning, with bone-headed plays. Brandon was playing first base the whole game. Fortunately, he made the plays that were needed, and he didn’t have any errors. The team made a valiant attempt to come back, getting as close as 7-9, but they couldn’t rally the team to the end.

Peyton’s recap

Saturday morning, our carpool came to get us at 830 am. We ran into a bit of traffic, and we were a little late, but arrived safe and sound.

The girls had three games, at 11 am, 2 pm and 630 pm. We had picnic style food, and the girls ate in between games. Peyton has been struggling with batting, but in the second game, she hit a big one!

She unfortunately ran into the tag at third as she realized she wouldn’t make it. Too bad! It was 3 outs by then. She said she didn’t cry (That was the way she was going to get to watch A League of Their Own, as I’d shown her a portion of the “No crying in baseball” clip.)

The team was really down in the middle game, and she came into pitch. She did okay, and fortunately didn’t get hit by a come backer like her teammate did against the third team they played. She was afraid to pitch after that.

Sunday’s game started at 8 am, meaning we had a 530 am wake up call. Peyton was texting Dave while I showered up, giving him a summary from her perspective. He was trying to cheer her up, and give her a pep talk for Sunday. They had two games on Sunday before we were out of there by midday.

Dave had ribs going, but our carpool had to go home, since the dad had to work. The girls won’t remember the scores of the games, but they will remember hanging out, playing charades in the grass, and having a great time with one another. They also hung out with the older team, who helped them warm up and got their spirits up.

Saturday and Sunday

In the morning, Dave headed to work, while the kids got their weekend homework done. Peyton had to read, practice piano, and clean up before we watched the Royal Wedding. She couldn’t wait, so she got all of that done quickly. We snuggled up to watch from the beginning, as the guests were arriving. With almost each guest, she would ask me, “Who is that?” The only exception: Oprah. We watched almost the whole thing before it was time for lunch and her to get ready for her basketball game. We headed down to that after Dave got home from work.

Peyton was the tallest member of her team at tip off; H and the other taller 3rd grader were not in attendance. Peyton held it down for the tip off. There is strict defense for the first 3 quarters of the game. The other team is not allowed to defend before the three point line, and it is a warning if you do it once. The second time, it was a technical foul. Peyton was asked to shoot free throws, and by this time, we were scoreless. She got it close, but no cigar in two attempts. I think this was the first time she shot free throws without anyone rebounding or around the key. The game ended up a lot to too little, and that meant the season was over. We headed to dinner with the team, and hung out before going back closer to home to practice softball at the high school. Brandon had volleyball after, so he was with us, too. He started climbing the bleacher stairs on his own, so I went to join him for a workout. We timed each other, and he was faster than me by a few seconds. Soon, we moved back to the football field, and we started sprinting at 50 yards. He was at a disadvantage because he would giggle, thus causing me to giggle as well. Finally, I asked Dave to record us, and Peyton counted down, so it was official.

After we were done, we reviewed the recording, and Brandon asked, “Is this thing on slo motion?” Haha, nope, it’s just us. We’re slow. But I’m still faster than slow.

Maybe because I had an awesome cheer section:

Yeah, it was cold out there.

Dave dropped us off at home after dropping Brandon off at volleyball. After showering, Peyton stayed up to watch the ucla softball game until the boys returned home and both kids were sent to bed.

The next day, Peyton had her piano recital, but Brandon had baseball practice. Dave dropped him off first, while I got Peyton to the recital to warm up. She was reluctant to practice with anyone around but she did lightly touch the keys. She was toward the second half of the program, arranged somewhat by complexity of songs.

Here is her performance:
This is a piece from her level 5 book. I think I played this in middle school or 5th grade at the earliest. She didn’t think she could memorize 5 pages worth of music, but little by little, she got it together. She really wanted to learn it, and worked hard at it since late February, early March.

She also worked on her brownie patch for her family artifact presentation:

She did this in a few takes, and I did a little teleprompter action and held up her presentation, to look less like she read from her paper. She hadn’t practiced enough to memorize that, and we just needed to get it done.

This weekend

First Friday went on for Cuatro de Mayo at our neighbor’s/schoolmate’s house, who hosted it. Peyton and I went, while the boys went to the movies to see the Avengers movie before anyone else ruined it for them. P had a great time hanging with the girls, while I chatted with the moms.

Saturday was all softball. Brandon missed his baseball game and vball clinic as we headed to tailgate by 8 am. P had her jersey on and two of her teammates, who coordinated with the same outfits. We had Peyton’s UCLA ball from last year, which was given to her for shagging foul balls at the Stanford game. We had a sharpie and she was all set. Her teammates had tickets behind homeplate, and we had tickets in the bleachers/general admission. We tailgated for almost 4 hours, watching batting practice from behind the fence catching four foul balls. Dave tried to catch one barehanded! Another coach caught a ball to protect his windshield. Another ball hit off a tree otherwise it would have cracked another coach’s window. Then, when it was game time, we headed in. The pitchers were both lights out, and it was a low scoring game as a result. Her coaches gave her their ticket half way through the game, so she joined her friends for the last half of the game.

After the win, Dave took her out where the players were exiting for the bus, which was parked just by our cars in the side parking lot. She got many of the players. I had been standing behind the head coach in the restroom line, as there was only one set of bathrooms for the entire stadium, players and coaches included. But Dave had told me to bring up our mutual friend, but I hadn’t seen the text just yet. But he did when we got her autograph, and she totally warmed up when she heard that we knew that friend. She saw Peyton’s jersey, and told us that was a great organization. Dave found it reassuring that she knew of the organization, just as the founder had informed the parents. We got pictures with most of those whose autographs she had, though some had to rush off to the bus.

Here they are:

We then headed to dinner with the coaches for Mexican dinner on Cinco de mayo. We had to wait for our table and one teammate’s dad knew the staff. He put the kids to work folding a stack of napkins. These kids took the job seriously.

four of them worked to fold that stack!

Our night ended after 9 pm, over 12 hours from when it started.

We all slept in on Sunday, with Peyton coming into our room, and then falling back asleep. Her first activity was basketball, then her piano party to practice for their recital, and finally her friend’s play. We were supposed to go to the play last night, but bailed because of getting back late from dinner. So, it was a bit unexpected for us to show up today, but our friend saved us tickets in the third row. We had great seats and had arrived just in time to start the show.

Peyton saw other friends, a t-ball teammate, a softball teammate, and one of Brandon’s baseball organization’s kid. We knew that the softball teammate was there because as we arrived, we heard “Hi, Peyton!” I was scrambling for our seat, but Peyton saw her friend’s older brother and acknowledged him. We were able to take pictures with Peyton’s friend after the show was done, but I could tell Peyton was so tired. It was over an hour and a half show, and a few times, I felt her head lean up against my shoulder.

There’s been a lot going on, mostly uploads by FB nowadays. It’s easier!

Here is the most recent piano piece:
Last weekend, Peyton’s team had a tourney and made it to the final game, after going 3-0 on Saturday, and winning the first game on Sunday. Peyton got to play second base for Saturday’s games, but on Sunday, with all the regular players back, she was out in the left field. Though we were down in the final game, there was one highlight:

(another mom caught this for me, as I hadn’t been filming)
That’s Peyton’s coach with the “OOOH” in the background, which she loves to hear and point out when she listens to it.

From Saturday:
hit by pitch!

She didn’t cry. She was told to run to first in a hurry. The coach’s mentality was just to normalize it to not have her react and start crying. She hustled down to first, then missed the steal sign, most likely because she was rubbing her back. The same pitcher hit her teammate at a previous tourney and caused a bruised rib. I put ice on her back after the game, and she didn’t bruise at all!

This past week, Brandon had games on Monday and Wednesday, while Peyton had practice on Tuesday and Thursday.

Brandon’s game on Monday had no scoreboard keeper, so Peyton volunteered to run it. She got into it, and by the end of the game was trying to call balls and strikes.

Here are Brandon’s hits:

He had a great game!

Unfortunately, the game lasted 2.5 hours, and the sun was almost gone by the time it was done. It was also super cold, but the ump thanked Peyton for a job well done. He asked her how she knew how to keep score so well. I mentioned her softball background, and when he asked which team she plays with, he knew the head of her organization! He told her to tell him “Harbo says, ‘hi’!” He asked her what position she plays. She rattled off, “Second base, short stop, left field, right field, third base, first base and pitcher.” He congratulated her on all those positions and told her to keep it up.

Will continue this weekend later…

Hope’s bday card because she got hit by a pitch

Sliding practice aftermath.

Long weekend

Friday, I went into work early, so Dave took the kids to school. I worked for a few hours, then went to Peyton’s class to help with their artwork. I picked her up less than an hour later, and we practiced piano and read. Then, we went to get Brandon from school. She was selling cookies, her last shift, from 4-6 pm. Brandon didn’t want to stay home, so he brought his book and came along. We were at Safeway, so we set up on one end of the store, while Peyton and the troop/cookie mom worked the other door. It was easier to separate mother/child units, which worked well the first hour. The second hour, both girls wanted their moms back, so they swapped places. It made the next hour go by really quickly! Peyton was up to asking EVERY customer if they wanted to purchase cookies. It was raining at that time, so she got some pity sales. People who would leave, turn around as she asked them, and then come back to check our her dwindling supply. We finished up by 6 pm, but not before I spotted some people inside trying to talk to Brandon. I asked him what they were asking him. The lady commented that he looked bored, and wanted to know why he was sitting there for so long. The man wanted to help translating for him, as he didn’t know English. However, Brandon doesn’t know Chinese, so I’m not sure how much help he was going to be. He was then chastised for not knowing Chinese. Must be his parents’ fault (insert eyeroll).

We headed home, and I got them fed. We were all so cold by then. They showered up, and Dave got home around 7 pm. We packed up our gear for our weekend away in Sacramento. Peyton woke up at 645 am, and we hopped on the piano quickly. We were done by 715 am, and then we got ready to leave. Dave was driving us to get out of the house by 8 am, as he wanted to avoid traffic. Their first games were not until 12 pm, but he rather just hang out and not stress. We received a text from the Yins that they were on the road, too. We stopped to get gas, rather got off and on the highway, since the gas was higher than Dave wanted to pay. As a result, the Yins came up right behind us, and we all stopped for gas, though a two different places. We all showed up to F’s game, which was the plan for us to pick up H and Ryan en route to the little girls’ game. We watched F’s game, and then we left to drop Brandon off at his game. My mom was there to meet us, and then we left him with a teammate to rush over to the start of Peyton’s game. I stayed with the younger girls, as I wanted to see them play.

They did a good job against the team they played. Tricia and F came up before the end of the game. I had been texting her updates prior to that. Ryan and H ended up going with them, while Dave, Peyton and I went back to Brandon’s gym, just two miles away. Luckily, our two were close, as F’s game was about 15 minutes away, without traffic. We all watched Brandon’s 2 pm game before our family of 4 went back to Peyton’s game at 4 pm. My mom took off from there. Peyton’s second game was tough. They had two tall girls on the opposing team. Peyton got stripped at the half court line and she was getting huffy. Then, on a fast break, she was pushed from the back and fell hard. With a few minutes to play, she went down in tears. Ryan talked to her quietly while she tried to regain composure to shoot her free throws. She played tougher after that, and picked herself back up. The game finished strong, with the best five on the court, prompting me to text Tricia that “Ryan means business.” They had 4:18 to play, and they were up by 4 points. Luckily, they hung onto the lead.

After the game, a mom/child pair asked me for a ride to the next destination, the pizza place. We were already taking H and Ryan there. Since there was a full car, I opted to NOT drive, and handed Ryan the keys. We got there safely, and the place was pure madness. It was ChuckE cheese on steroids. We got our hands washed, I started with the girls’ food, and then I helped myself through the buffet. Ryan met us after dropping us off, and washing up as well. The kids had only 45 minutes to eat in the party room, since we were late after the game. The third grade boys were already there. Brandon and Dave had gotten a ride back from the Woos, back to the hotel. Krissy was in charge of the team gift, so she went back to deliver that, while Chris came back to the madness that was the pizza place. After our time was up in the room, they kindly kicked us out, turned it over, and presented the kids with their play cards. We then went to F’s team’s room and hung out there. After their time was out, and we were kicked out of yet another room, we rolled over to G’s team’s room. Each room was being turned over and reconfigured for another team. The kids were all together, though at one point, I went to find Peyton as I didn’t see her with H. Ryan had H in line to turn in her points for prizes, so I panicked. H told me to find her in the bumper car area, but she wasn’t there, only two other teammates. I finally found her at the basketball hoop game. Shooting with F and her friend M. They were totally keeping an eye on Peyton, and joining in with them. At one point, F and M, both 8th graders, shot for a combined 80 points. Peyton and F tried once, and then again, and came up with 75. Peyton wanted to beat them, I’m sure! We finally went back to the hotel , where Dave had been drinking for quite some time by that time.

The whole organization was staying at the same hotel, pretty much taking over all 3 floors of hotel.

I had Peyton shower up as I unloaded our stuff. It was 10 pm by this time, so I texted Tricia to see if H would be coming down to the lobby. Brandon was already there with his team. My rules for Peyton:
1) no going to the pool, 2) stay out of other people’s rooms, 3) walk in the hotel, 4) no more food, 5) stay away from Brandon.

She only broke the “stay out of other people’s rooms” as when we went downstairs, H’s parents took Peyton to their room to hang out. Then the girls came downstairs to hang out with their teammates, but then returned to the big girls’ room. They had two rooms between the five of them, and F’s teammate stayed with G and F in the room on our floor. In fact, when G got back from the pizza place, she came up to me to ask what room she was in! I connected her to her mom to tell her which room she’d be staying in. I was chatting with one of the grandparents, the wife of Peyton’s coach last year. We chatted for over an hour, while Dave was talking to other parents. The kids were totally entertained, no tattling, no issues, for over two hours. They stayed up until midnight! I went to retrieve Peyton from the Yins’ room, and H asked me to take her back down to her mom. So I did that while leaving the big girls in their room. I didn’t know, but Brandon had retired to the room to put himself to sleep by 11 pm. He was over staying up, especially as his teammates all bailed. He can’t hang super late like Peyton can. We found him watching clone wars upon our return. He’d changed and gotten himself ready for bed.

I thought it was going to be rough in the morning, but it wasn’t too bad. We woke up just before 7 am, out of habit. Dave went to go get coffee outside of the hotel, while we slowly got ready. When he returned, he said that H was already downstairs eating breakfast with her parents. I’ve never seen Peyton get ready so quickly! Brandon had been ready to eat an hour before that, but I didn’t want him down there without supervision. Breakfast was included in our stay, so the whole team/organization was there. Brandon quickly went with his teammates, while we sat with Peyton and the Yins. During breakfast, the Yins asked Peyton if she wanted to join them for M’s game, and then F’s game. Then we’d all meet up for their game at 1230 pm. She was excited to finish breakfast and get ready to go with them. We had Brandon by then, and his game was at 1120 am, and since it was so early, we headed to visit a nearby bakery that one of our teammates had found.

Brandon’s game was close to start, then they started to pull away at the end. Dave was planning to leave by noon, so I headed to go with him, having my mom drive Brandon back to our game. She’d come for the two final games on Sunday.

Unfortunately, we missed Brandon’s spectacular performance! A dad texted me after I left that “Brandon is on fire! He had a three point play!” The moms around my mom had said that we shouldn’t have left such a good game!

They ended up winning 55-26. Brandon was allowed to announce his teammates at the mini award ceremony. They were all given towels, and he called out their names to accept their award

His son is in the third grade, and then he has a first grader and a 2 year old. We saw him both on Saturday and Sunday, and we hadn’t seen him “Live” since college or just after. We’d been keeping up with him via FB so I knew that his kid did look “familiar”.

Peyton’s opponent was going to be the host’s team. They had 2 fourth graders that we’d already been scouting the night before. Apparently, we were placed in a bracket with 3-4 graders. There was a #12, so they were going to put our #12 (Peyton) on her. But only one of their 4th graders showed up, just before game time. She was a big girl who could move, and definitely their best player.
I did hear a grandma during the game ask, “Who has #12?” We had one 2nd grader on the team, as we needed another player to sub out. She integrated into the team really well, and gelled with the girls after just a few minutes. She learned the plays, caught passes from Peyton, and scored 4 baskets in one game!

Peyton got lots of playing time with H both on the court and off. We had to say goodbye after the game was done, as Dave wanted to get back to work. We headed out, without lunch, though neither kid complained. We had snacks at Dave’s work, let the kids catch up on their reading as did I, and then after an hour of that, we played Charades on my phone. We were playing Disney characters, and we were all having a great time with that. Soon enough, Dave came back to get us in the snack area, and we headed out to get IN and Out. We had a great weekend of basketball and laughs. Now, the season is over, and we are headed into softball and baseball season. However, there is another team forming for another league, and we may try to make what we can. I guess H and P want to play together some more!

Final tally: girls 3-0. Boys 2-1.

Who?

Peyton is excited to see Wrinkle in Time. She read it recently, and we were talking about it. She sounded like she was asking me a question, when she said, “Oprah is Miss Which?” I told her I didn’t know. She said, “No, Oprah is Miss Which.” Asking me? Telling me? I had no idea. Then, she said, “You know, ‘Miss Who’, ‘Miss Which’, and ‘Miss Whatsit’.” It’s been awhile since I read the book, clearly.

Today, she wrote a letter to an author about another book she just read. She read the book and finished it over the break. I saw a FB post that listed good books for GS girls. This was one of them, and if they write the author, not only will they get a letter back, they will get a patch (with the payment of $2).

Total Devastation

Late Sunday night, after Peyton returned from a softball team tryout in Sacramento, I saw an email from her piano teacher. It started out by apologizing that Peyton did not pass her theory test. I had not yet seen the results, but I assume it was sent to the teachers first. I had to tell Peyton. I went to her room, as she had just gone to bed. I asked her if she was awake, and she said, “Yes.” I told her I had a bit of bad news to share. I told her that she didn’t pass her test that she took the day before. There was silence, and then it hit. The tears, crying, sobbing, and continued sobs. She was so devastated. I hugged her tight, and tried to come up with something that would console her. But I knew nothing I could say would help. I asked her if she wanted to read the email. She composed herself, dried her eyes a bit so she could see, and then slowly read it to herself. I told her she could try again next year as her teacher had recommended. 30 minutes later, after asking for tissues, she started to cry less. I asked her if she wanted me to stay with her. That cheered her up. I told her to move over (in her twin bed), and I brought my stuff over. I was trying to temper the situation, telling her that Thursday might be hard, since it was her lesson. I also told her that the recital might be difficult as that’s when they hand out the certificates. Not passing the theory test meant that she would not be receiving one. I asked her what she thought would happen. She suddenly put her arms up like the shrug emoji. I started laughing, she started laughing, and it was at that point, I know she would persevere. She did continue to sniffle herself to sleep, but I reassured her that I was not mad at her, that I still loved her, and that we could practice lots for the next time. She seemed determined to get back at it. Her teacher told her to smile at the fact that she got excellent, and 5+ on her songs and the performance aspect of her testing series. I also told her that if she didn’t make the softball team, there would be next year. She is still trying out one year ahead of schedule, as it’s a 2008 birth year team, as that’s the youngest it can start. She was getting a head start on that.

Here is her footage as Dave caught from the side:
Monday, she came home, and did not balk at being asked to practice. She even let me record the songs she played before she forgets the songs she worked so hard to refine the last 4 months:

A “Free” Saturday

Last night, we were looking at our schedule and saw that only Peyton had an 8 am basketball game. As soon as they said that, there was an email sent out to the team from her coach. He coaches high school, and he was inviting the team out to watch his team against another HS team in the area. We were all in as the other team has a daughter of one of Peyton’s first competitive coaches. The home team has a daughter of Peyton’s most recent summer coach. So, we knew at least two players, and three coaches that would be there. We showed up after basketball, and after breakfast. We hadn’t had time to enjoy breakfast, leaving the house at 730 am. They were playing the first team where H and P missed, and the teams tied at 18-18. This time, H was out but Peyton was there. The score was 24-4. The refs told Dave to back off on defense. He was already laying back by having other girls run point. But backing off on an aggressive team wasn’t going to teach the kids anything. Sure they didn’t double team, which they aren’t supposed to do anyway. But even then, the other team wasn’t getting any shots to fall. The coach is a rather aggressive one and it was nice to see him get riled up by this. He was shouting at his players while Dave could barely be heard from the stands. I updated Tricia throughout the whole game and when it was done, Dave got a text from Ryan. We saw one player who used to play with us. She switched teams and got to be point guard which she always asked to play. Even Brandon made the comment, “She got her wish. She’s playing point guard.”

When we arrived, her basketball and softball teammate had just pulled up as well. Her dad was the coach, and I wanted them to go watch the game from inside the dugout if they were allowed. He was busy on the field, so he didn’t notice their attempt to go in the dugout. We watched from the visitor’s side, as we had a whole family there, in the sun. Toby kept looking at his watch, since he had to leave. We asked him where he had to be, and he said “Volleyball practice” at their home high school. We told him that Brandon had played in middle school. He joked that he should come with him to run practice. We had already been trying to plan a reunion to Dave and Buster’s, so we planned to do lunch there after the game. So, he said it was totally fine for Brandon to come with him and shag balls with him if he wanted. Brandon shrugged and headed out with him, while his #2 daughter made a game time decision to go along with them. So, we were down a kid and able to watch the rest of the scrimmage. It was a slaughter, and we got to watch our friend’s daughter pitch. There were some good plays, and it showed how the girls all chatted to each other. We are working on that aspect with respect to Peyton’s game.

When the game was over, Peyton was asking me if we could take her friend, the current coach’s daughter. She had wanted Peyton to come with her to their house, but when she found out we were going to D&B’s she wanted to go, too. So, we took her along with us, and met the other family back there. Brandon came in later, and we all ordered lunch while the kids played games together. Peyton melted down when I told her to introduce her teammate to her old coach and his family, even though she was excited to do so when I first told her that was the requirement in having her friend come with us. The three girls all played together, while Brandon was given an unlimited card for video games. Later, the girls joined him when they ran out of credits for ticketed games. After a few hours, the kids all cashed out with prizes. We said good bye to the other family, and then we walked around for a lap, doing some shopping. We went back to use the unlimited video game card for another half hour or so. Then, R’s mom texted to see if they needed to pick her up. I told her we were on our way back and could drop her off. Her dad came out to greet us, and then we said we’d see him all over again tomorrow for practice. Never a dull moment! We came home to shower up, and Peyton practiced for her piano test tomorrow.

I hope she does okay, as she is having second thoughts about skipping one full level over last year. She tested at level 2 last year and was eager to skip 3 and go straight to four. Hopefully she made the right choice.

The report back on Brandon was that he has a soft touch, can pass well, and is learning how to dig out tough serves. He got to fill in on the scrimmage as the other boys were leaving from practice. Coach had told him that he may have some more experience than some of the kids out there today, who were new to the sport. We told him he was being flattered, to which he said, “I know.” One kid was asked NOT to serve it to him, but it kept coming to him anyway. Luckily, the kid is a good sport, and he didn’t let it bother him. Glad he was able to put some work in to what may be his go-to sport in high school!
