Tourney Recap

Last Friday, Brandon had basketball clinic, while we brought Peyton to practice. We ended up spending 1.5 out of the 2 hours of clinic just on her batting and fielding. Dave had asked me to hit grounders to her, while he played first base, so she could practice the throw to first. He was getting frustrated with me for not hitting them directly to her, hitting too far out of her range, or not hitting hard enough to her. I commented that he was lucky I was making contact with the ball more than 75% of the time! And that I’d like him to practice piano with her in an attempt to make her better. Peyton chuckled at that. We went back to pick up Brandon from clinic (we were at a different part of the high school). The recruiter for the Asian league competitive team talked to Dave, this coming off the 4 night basketball camp that she just wrapped up earlier that week. He was talking to Dave about the upcoming team, which doesn’t even start until 6th grade! I think they are concerned about Peyton’s preference for softball, but otherwise, they offered her a spot on the team, one of three of the eight rising fourth graders that had come out earlier in the week. We talked about that in the car, while the kids were nodding off. We drove to my mom’s right after the clinic, as Peyton had a softball tourney in Sacramento. We arrived late Friday night, and my mom had accommodations all ready, both rooms were prepped upstairs. Brandon had his own room, while Peyton was going to take the trundle in the other room, with the full bed for Dave and me just above the trundle. While Dave was showering, Peyton was tossing and turning in the trundle, saying it was uncomfortable. She told me she was going to come up with me, and I told her she’d better do that before Dave was done. She scampered up to me, and was almost asleep when Dave came out and saw what was going on. She was half in her uniform, as we were to get up by 8 am to leave by 9 am. My mom had breakfast for us, and we all left together by just before 9. We got to the field in time, and we were all ready for hot weather ahead for the day. My mom picked the HOTTEST tournament to date this year to join us. One of the teammate’s moms asked if that was my mom, and she told me, “She is BEAUTIFUL!” I had introduced my mom to some but not all of the teammates/parents. She hung out with Brandon in the shade for the first game, then we ate lunch together in between games 2 and 3. After game 3, we headed back to the brewery that she had won a silent auction beer tasting for four. Three of us tasted, while the kids had cold root beer. It was refreshing! The kids played Uno, while we hung out until our dinner reservation. My mom made a reservation at Dingus McGee’s. Dingus is a name that the kids had been calling each other lately, as in “dodo”. The whole time we were at the restaurant, she was laughing at the mention of it. The kids shared a fettuccine alfredo with chicken and calamari, while I had a salad, my mom had fish and chips and Dave had prime rib. We ended dinner after sunset and with a chocolate lava cake paired with a candle, and we went home and showered up for the next day. Unfortunately, the next day’s field was further away, though on our way home. So, we had to get up by 515 am, to get out the door by 545 am, and then got coffee and to the field by 7 am. Dave made a stop for coffee, and I was going to go with him, though he pointed to the backseat, Peyton was still asleep. She fell asleep when we got to the freeway from my mom’s. I had previously told me mom she didn’t have to go with us, since it was about 1 hour from her house. Her immediate response, after sitting in the sun for almost 8 hours the day before, “No SH*@!” Because Brandon was hanging on her, she quickly changed it to, “I mean, NO KIDDING.” She did get up to help us out of the car. The first game on Sunday was much better than the previous day’s games. We ended up winning by 6-7 runs, with Peyton driving in 2 of those runs on a double.

I updated my mom while the game was in progress.

Then, the next game wasn’t until 1230pm. The girls had a big break, so they busted out Uno cards, and almost all of them participated in the game. They all stayed in the shade, ate lunch, and relaxed in between games, then came back out to play at 1230 pm. They got off to an early lead up by 5 runs! Then, somehow the momentum shifted, and slowly runs were given up. Later, the other team came up to tie the game, sending the game into an international tie breaker. Initially, they had called Peyton to go run from second, but later, swapped her out for the player that was last batted out. It was stressful, and things didn’t go the way we were hoping. Partially, the team parents were happy to leave the field by 2 pm, as opposed to staying until the 330 pm game, but also, we were hoping the girls would find a way to pull out the win! We drove the rest of the way home, got showered up, and felt the temperature drop about 25 degrees, as it was about 75 here at home. Dave found tickets to the Incredibles 2, and we headed to the movies! We’re trying to live it up during our summer break. I took Monday off, so I wasn’t worried about having to wake them up. They did get out of the house by 830 am, and I watched their swim lessons, one at a time. I then walked back home, leaving my car there, so I could build in exercise. I cleaned up, did 3 loads of laundry, and also studied for my recertification and completed a packet from that. I went to pick the kids up, and came home to do their work. Dave came home, and we all went back out on the field to hit with the kids. Brandon got two new bats for the upcoming season, so he was testing them out. We went to Dicks and saw one of Peyton’s teammates there! We met up for dinner after their errands

Tuesday, we did the same thing, but this time it was after I worked all day. She’s trying to get ready for the next two weekends, when they have tourneys in South SJ and in Tahoe. Then the “season” will come to an end. The kids got to talk to their cousins, Uncle Jeff and Auntie Meg, for Abby’s bday. We tried on Monday, but we got to her too late, and she was already asleep. We aren’t able to meet up with them this summer, as we have in years past, as our next free weekend is Labor day weekend, and they will be back home by then.

Here are the pictures from the weekend:
