UCLA camp

We drove down on Thursday after I went to work for a few hours. Peyton started UCLA camp on Friday. We stayed in a hotel in downtown LA, and walked 1/2 a mile to Grand Central market for dinner. P was nervous, but it was actually quite clean and relatively few bums. Especially compared to SF. The streets were pretty clean, but she held my hand tight while we walked. We each had our own meals; Peyton and I split a seafood stew, while Brandon had fish and chips, while Dave had street tacos.

We took a little tram up in the middle of downtown, then walked back the rest of the way.

We went to sleep early, as we knew we’d have a long day the next day. We checked in at the earliest time to check in, and then we had to wait another full hour before opening ceremonies.

Dave caught this pic when p had to go potty. Aaliyah Jordan, Zoe Shaw and Stevie Wisz.

Coach I (Kelly Inouye-Perez) fired the girls up and gave them a pep talk before they were released for lunch.

We headed to lunch, then they came back for some station work.

They were evaluating girls to see their skill levels before dividing them into teams. They did finally split into teams, came up with a team name, and also a skit to present the next night. The coaches took down contact information for the kids who had phones. Peyton learned to be responsible for her gear, her meal ticket, and being on time from meals. She was a bit nervous for lunch, since she didn’t have a team yet, but she texted me that some girls asked her to sit with them. I was happy for that. She even met another girl named Peightynn. We found her again on the field for the evening. They took metrics that first evening. She sent me this text:

We drove back to the hotel after this day. On Saturday, she went to get breakfast, but wasn’t feeling very hungry. She got two muffins, and also got me one. We walked up with her to Easton stadium, where they got to play on the actual field the softball team plays on.

They also got to check out the locker room. One of the coaches told us we could take her out on the field and take pictures of her. We snuck her out on the field and had her in the dugout and in various places. When we returned, the girls had already packed up their stuff, and were heading out. They were wondering whose stuff it was, and we were guilty. We walked down with her coach, and she was walking with us, and told us, “She’s good. How old is she?” We told her she was 10. She said, “If she’s this good now, I can’t wait to see what she’ll be like as she gets older.” She did mention, “She’s silent, but good.” We didn’t know what to say! I mean, we know she works hard, but it’s validating to hear it from someone else. Her coach is a player herself on CSUN. I saw her tap Peyton on the shoulder and try to talk to her.

I asked her later about it.

We continued down the hill, dropped her off at her own lunch, then we headed to lunch in Westwood. We joined another mom who was lunching already, waiting to meet up with the girls again. It was a long lunch, at least 2 hours. We didn’t know what else to do. We headed back to the field after stopping for Diddy Riese cookie sandwiches. Now, they were scrimmaging each other. I had warned Peyton of the schedule, and that she shouldn’t eat too much. She wanted to eat ice cream in the dorms when she found out that we were eating it.

We watched her scrimmage against the other team her age/ability. She was the starting short stop, but she did have to switch out to outfield with the other girls to make it fair. They alternated innings. But whenever she could, she would position herself there. She hustled up even though it was pretty warm out there. We were under umbrellas and still pretty warm. We then broke for dinner. We headed out to Beverly Hills for dinner, picking up some food to eat back at the stadium, as the girls were watching a movie after skit night.

Peyton’s skit required very little speaking, which was perfect for her.

The movie we watched was “Coco”. While we were leaving the stadium, another coach gave P a high five and said, “I remember you! You had 5/5 on your accuracy!”

We went home that night, as there was little traffic expected on Sunday. We still did leave by 7 am to get there with plenty of time to spare. She went to breakfast, and this time, she stayed in there and ate with her friends. She lasted at least 25 minutes this time. She even went to visit a dorm room of a friend of hers. I asked her how it was. Her response, “It was small. With bunk beds.” Her last station was another skill building with Bri Tautalafua, the third baseman.

She had them doing challenges, both infield and outfield. Surprisingly, Peyton did better in the outfield drills, coming in second for her team. She did run faster than the girl who beat her in the drill though, and Bri had to throw her a ball she didn’t think she’d get to end the multiple round tie-breakers. Finally, the girls had their last lunch, and this time, Peyton went all out. She didn’t have any more softball after lunch, so she had pizza, pasta and salad. And ice cream. They ended their day with shopping time in the student store, and fun and games, with water balloon toss. Coach I ended with closing remarks and then each coach presented their “Camper of the week awards”. I told Dave I was going to record. He thought it was presumptuous. I told him, if she didn’t get it, then I dump the footage. But on the off chance she got something, then I’d have it recorded! And I’m glad I did!

At the end of camp, she had made friends, namely a girl on her team from one of the strong LA teams in the area. She made an impression on the coaches, and had fun doing so. We didn’t get to see her coach after camp, as she went back to the field to clean up. We had Peyton text her thank you. She responded right away!

Next year she’ll go back and stay overnight! She’s ready now.

Annie Jr!

Friday night, Peyton had a show at 5 pm, but Brandon had baseball practice and then basketball practice, with a bit of downtime in between. I was out in front of the multi-purpose room by 330 pm, with a great parking spot, and Peyton waiting for curtain call at 4 pm. We just hung out until she had to leave. Then, Dave arrived around 415 pm, as Brandon was picked up by another mom, who has a son on both of Brandon’s baseball and basketball teams. Dave helped me secure first row seats, as I was the first in line, and I’d overheard the lady behind me tell her son to run as fast as he could and save as many seats as he could with his sweatshirt. I was not happy. I was when I did get my first row, however.
We received a photo of Brandon eating ramen, which he had a super big smile in front of a bowl of noodles. The mom that took the picture is my college roommate’s BFF’s roommate from college. Small world. Thank you, FB, for making that connection for us.

P nailed her solo, lines, and dancing for Friday. I was super proud how she carried herself, and how she shined up there on stage, even from last year. Last year, she seemed to look around, check out what other people are doing, and then do her dances. This year, she was helping to corral other people to their spots, and she had a larger role. As soon as the show was over, Dave left to coach Brandon’s basketball team, while I zipped Peyton to basketball practice. I left her with the coach, who would be taking her to dinner with his family, since Dave’s practice ended at the same time. I went to a holiday dinner for my work group. We had to do so much coordination to even have this happen! Crazy-town.

Saturday, we had a lazy morning, as we skipped out on Santa. We didn’t get out of the house until lunchtime, then it started to rain. I got some ingredients to make mochi, so Peyton and I made that before i sent her down for a nap. She got up, then got ready for her second show at 730 pm. We made it to school by 525 pm, and no one was there yet, as the 5 pm show was already being seated. Dave took Brandon an hour before to baseball. His games were at 630 pm and 830 pm, but there was an earlier rain delay that was backing up games. Dave came back, but this time, my parents, aunt, uncle, and H had joined me in the front of the line. Her softball teammates also joined in, and I knew she was more nervous because of that. We took the first row with the kids, then my family and I along with the moms sat behind the kids. P cracked during her first song, but then nailed the rest of her parts. The ensemble for “Hard Knock Life” did better on the second night, so glad they saw that. They were a bit off on timing on Friday. After the show, we took a bunch of pictures, but NONE of Dave and me with P.

We brought H to our house, cut up a bunch of mochi for her, and waited for her mom to come get her. Dave was freezing his tush off watching Brandon’s second game. They got run-ruled both times, and Dave was glad to come home. Brandon was so cold, he did not fight wearing the neck gator that I’d given to him. Along with the cool weather long-sleeve under his jersey. Peyton wanted to sleep with us, but I told her only if she got showered and in bed before Dave got home. She just made it, as she was in our bed as Dave got home, and he didn’t know she was there until it was too late. She was sound asleep.

This morning, when P got up, Dave was gone! I thought he went to sleep in her bed, but turns out, he went for a run! What’s gotten into him! He showered and got ready for Brandon’s baseball game, while I headed out to the private HS open house that my friend at work recommended that I attend. She didn’t want to go, but I had her go meet with the softball coach, who remembered her, gave her a high five and said, “Good to see you again!” She met three of the softball team members, who asked her who her coach was, what position she plays for, which team she plays for, and her name, of course. I asked about how the handle being a student-athlete, if there are any multi-sport athletes among them, and what positions they all play. P was hiding behind me the whole time. I had to force her to say bye to them. Sheesh. We went to sit in on a few performing arts performances-orchestra and an improv group. That was funny, and P really enjoyed it, when she “got” the jokes. Our final stop was for the hyped-up cookies! There were a ton of cookies laid out on trays, and my friend encouraged us to take as many as we liked! P took two, as did I, and then we took 1 each for the boys. I didn’t want to go overboard! We came home, and P changed for TC basketball. The uniforms were new this year, but she didn’t get her lucky number. I took her to the game, but I didn’t realize how early I should have arrived. I only got there 20 minutes early, when I realized we should have gotten there 30 minutes before. In my mind, I probably had that in there, but I failed to execute that. Dave arrived after the first few minutes of the first quarter.

Bunts: these bunts had caught the attention of the bunting coach.

Today, they had mini games since it was the final day at camp. I was talking to the coach at the far field, and I missed seeing Peyton bunting with that coach’s dad. When I walked over there, she was bunting and the coach was telling her that she needed to beat 13 (which I found out was HER own score). She did have another streak, but it didn’t beat 13. That was the final winning number of consecutive bunts.

The best part of camp is that she made a friend. Another shy kid, that she befriended from her team since day 1, who is in a similar age group as she. She ate lunch with her each day, and paired up with her as a perfect throwing and catching partner. She is also a pitcher, so they were paired with one another on pitching. The only time she was without her was when she left early from camp yesterday for practice. Peyton looked lost without her, and had to pair up with a less skilled player, and they didn’t get as far in their mini games.

Today, they partnered up and they were the last two pairs standing for the catching and throwing drill. Since Peyton already won a ball from the earlier skills game, she bowed up from getting another, but her friend was awarded a ball for their efforts. I befriended the grandpa, a longtime coach and his daughter, the little girl’s mom, who played at CAL while she was in college. The grandpa wanted to exchange numbers in case the girls ever came across each other. Last year, she attended the event that Peyton will be going to next week, so I got a bit of insight in the week from him. Another dad that I met asked if I was going to eat lunch with Peyton today, and I told him I leave for lunch, even if it’s to eat at my car, to let her make those friendships, otherwise I know she’d probably sit with me. And I even found her playing with a group of friends today, pitching and catching with them in their own informal game.

Pictures from today:

Cal camp day #1

Peyton’s teammate’s mom texted me last night that her daughter wasn’t feeling well and would be missing out on camp today. Peyton didn’t want to go as a result! But, we reassured her she would meet friends just like she did at Stanford last year. In fact, the first girl in line was a girl she met last year at camp. And another dad came up to us and told us we looked familiar, and that the girls knew each other from Stanford. He had come up from LA to attend!

I wasn’t sure if Dave was coming so I wanted to head out early, especially since this was Day 1 and we had to check in with paperwork. We headed out, and it took us a full hour to arrive. The line had already started to form, and we were about 10 deep, with about 20 minutes to wait for check in. Dave and Brandon took off on foot, while I stood in line with a slightly nervous Peyton. She was apprehensive, especially as we saw girls from all kinds of travel teams. I’d asked her to wear her “clothes” to represent her team, which she reluctantly did. Good thing though, as we were asked to pay for parking. I went up to the parking attendant to check to see if we had to pay. He looked at Peyton’s jersey, and asked if that was the SJ Sting that she played for. When she told him it was, he told us, “My daughter plays for the 16 u team with Bob (the owner)!” He proceeded to tell us that it was a small world, and that he’d be here the whole day, and promised NOT to give us a ticket. I winked and told him to remember my car. I took his word for it, and despite being told by the leader of the camp, one of the assistant coaches, to pay for parking, I did not. Speaking of the leader of this camp, she is a friend of a one of Peyton’s teammates, the one who was supposed to come up with us. She walked the line, gave instructions, then said, “OH, HI, Peyton! Good morning to you!” Peyton cringed and sunk behind me in abject horror! I nudged her to say hello, but she was so embarrassed because all these girls heard it. It was comical to me, and I rolled with it, saying hi to coach. She may well be one of Peyton’s fall coaches, as she is friends with the assistant coach on our team. She helped Brandon when we went to the CAL/UCLA game back in May. She is a lefty, and helped him with pointers for first base. Later, when the boys arrived, she asked Brandon how he was doing, and we told her he ended his little league career playing a clean first base, using the tips she provided to him. Upon check in, the girls received a CAL jersey to wear for the day at camp.

The parents were talked to all together while the girls warmed up. We then were allowed to watch the girls, and we found Peyton with her team at the fielding station. The girls were throwing balls to each other, in a pattern, however, one girl couldn’t catch Peyton’s throw, it glanced off her glove, and hit another girl who was standing in line not paying attention to what was in front of her. I think it may have hit her in the face, and she was not wearing a mask. The girl went down, held her face, and another of the younger coaches was tending to her, while the first coach brought all the girls together for another drill. Coach Mandy came up to the fence, after tending to the girl, and told me, “Peyton has quite an arm!” I told her that she just nailed someone with her throw. She told me “That’s all right, these girls have to know how to catch.” I explained the circumstances, and then she addressed the safety issue that they should all be paying attention. Peyton wasn’t wearing a mask either, and later came back with hers.

We watched the morning drills and then the scrimmage. They got to play on the real field where the college players play! It was a bit of a disaster, as one girl, who told the coaches she pitches, clearly could NOT pitch. It extended the innings, and it was a nightmare to watch. Even the head/main coach of the actual team, ended up leaving the area, unfortunately, before Peyton got up to bat. Peyton was last up, and I think it was alphabetical order. Peyton was so annoyed, she said that she wanted to change her name to mine. At least she’d get to hit in the middle. After that, they broke for lunch, and the three of us headed into town for some food. I had brought food for Brandon and me, as I didn’t know what Dave’s plan was. There was some talk of him heading into work after dropping us off, but he decided to stay the whole day.

We watched Peyton’s bunting session, and the male, older coach was fairly impressed. We could hear him chatting up Peyton, as she laid down the majority of the pitches he gave her. She was first up, and the pitching machine had been adjusted to what he thought was the correct speed. But after Peyton, no one else could lay it down, so they had to tune down the speed of the pitch. At the end of their session, he told everyone, “Okay, now watch THIS.” He called Peyton over to bunt some more. She laid down a few more bunts, and then they moved stations.

Later, after another rotation, the male coach called to Peyton, “Hey number 15, come over here.” Mandy was walking up, and the male coach pitched her some balls from the machine. He gave her another three pitches, of which, she bunted two cleanly. Shortly afterward, Mandy came up to me and said, “Hey, my dad’s really impressed with Peyton’s bunting.” I asked her, “That’s your dad?!” She said he comes out to help her run a session each camp. He played fast pitch softball, and he was the one who taught her the game. Peyton told us after camp that he asked her which team she played for. When she said, “Sting” he told her he coached in that organization before. And he knew she must be good if she could bunt like that! Mandy knew that her dad had no idea who Peyton was and that Mandy knew her already, which is what I suspected. I did hear Mandy tell her dad, “San JOSE!”

The next station, they were practicing throwing again. She threw a line drive right to her coach, and the coach exclaimed, “Where did that come from?!” I could hear it from half way across the field where I was sitting. She even made her do it again, telling the other 20 girls to watch her. I’m sure she was so embarrassed, but when I asked her after camp, she said, “Nope, I wasn’t.” I think she likes it! Mandy came around to that station, and when it was Peyton’s time up again, she threw a laser to the coach. Mandy clapped for her and cheered loudly. Hopefully this will give her the confidence she needs. Other girls were overthrowing the coach, or taking short hops, but she managed to get it to her each time when the pressure was on. This will be good for her, as she will have to try out for her team again in the fall.

The final station was another fielding drill, simulating catches at first, as if playing first base, and then playing second base, with half the team as base runners and the other half as second basemen. They were working on sliding, and then catching and putting down the tag on runners. After this, they were done for the day. This coach, who had watched her throw and was catching for her, told her that she should play 12 u. I didn’t think I heard it right, and as I was standing around, while coach walked by, she asked me, “Are you Peyton’s mom?” I confirmed, and she told me, “I think she should play 12’s. She throws harder than half of the 12 year old players I’ve seen.” I told her she should tell Mandy, because I don’t believe her. Peyton told me that coach had asked for her age, and even when she told her she was 9, she told her she should go play 12’s. Mandy’s advice was to stay where she was and continue to get better 🙂 We have no intention of moving her up! The girls returned their jerseys, and then we were all done by 3 pm. Back at it again tomorrow, but this time, I will have grumpy Brandon alone, who did see a friend he used to play ball with, but he wasn’t interested in hanging out with him today.

Here are the pictures:

Last Tourney!

This was the last tourney and we were headed to Tahoe. We actually headed up Thursday night to my mom’s, then went up to Tahoe on Friday morning. We booked a last minute reservation in a dumpy motel, but it’s close to where we were hanging out. Dave had a conference call to make at 10 am after we had a quick breakfast up in Tahoe. He went to our motel for wifi, while I took the kids to stroll down the street. The team was to meet up at the beach at 10 am, and it was just around then. I decided to walk up and down to check out the little stores, and suddenly, we were upon the beach. Peyton thought she saw her coach and teammate, but I highly doubted it. But sure enough, as we got closer, it was their family! They had their chairs, tents, and coolers headed to the beach. We set up with them, and the kids, who were changed and ready for water, joined the play. Dave soon found us, and we set up right next to them. It was overcast, and the water was frigid, however the kids did not care one bit. They had the time of their lives, and soon after, teammate after teammate showed up until we had most of the team there. We ended up staying out there until 6 pm, with the sun fully showing up in the afternoon, meaning we were out on the beach over 8 hours.

We headed back to the motel and cleaned up. We met up with the team at 730 pm for dinner at a fancier hotel up there. There were over 20 of us, 6 families, and we were set up at a long table. Unfortunately, the hotel staff couldn’t accommodate our large party, despite asking us to be seated. We ended up there until 930 pm, and we were all grumpy because it took so long to get our food. Brandon’s was the last to arrive, chicken strips, and he did wait patiently, despite normally getting “hangry”. He had the girls to keep him distracted, so it was okay for him, I suppose. He was at the other end of the table, so we didn’t hear much from him. We went back to the motel, and brushed up for bedtime. Luckily, the Saturday games didn’t start until 11 am. We didn’t have to get to the field until 9 am, however we still did arrive by 830 am, nice and early. The team won the first game, against a team that had previously blown us out. Then, the next team, we beat 16-0, the largest margin we’d ever had all season long. We had a little break, in which we had lunch that we packed, and then the final game was against a tough team. We lost 8-3 in that game. But having the third game early meant that we could go to the pool. We had checked into our nice hotel for Saturday, at the Northstar resort.

We had all the team over for a pool party, only there had been thunder nearby. Whenever there was thunder heard, then 30 minutes needed to pass before anyone was allowed in the pool. We started at 5 pm, and just as the next 30 minutes was to pass, there was another round of thunder heard. So, it kept getting pushed back further and further. Finally, at 630 pm, they were given the all clear. The pool was supposed to close at 7 pm, but the nice lifeguards extended the time until 730 pm. The kids were gotten out of the pool by then, and we all headed back to shower up for the next day, which started at 11 am, meaning we didn’t have to get to the field until 10 am. We enjoyed our three bedroom condo, larger than our first one that we owned! There were two bedrooms downstairs, one with a queen bed, one with a pair of twin beds, along with a full bathroom, and then the middle floor had the living room, large kitchen, and dining room, while the upstairs had a full bathroom and another bedroom with a queen bed. It was pretty warm upstairs, so we all took over the bottom third of the condo. Neither kid wanted to sleep alone, so they both took over the twin beds, and because of the long day and swimming, they were out like lights!
We woke up on Sunday, and got out of the condo by 830 am or so and took our time getting in. The second field was about 30 minutes away, so we wanted to get a headstart out. Peyton basically woke up to go into the car to nap again. That would be the first nap of 3 for the day. The game we played on Sunday was against a team that we’d beaten by one run the day before. They were a tough team, and though we had an early lead, we blew it in one inning. Peyton had a nice play from right field to throw out the batter who tried to run to second on her. She fired the ball to second base for the out. But, we just couldn’t put enough runs up. Here is one hit of Peyton’s on Sunday, against a pitcher that our coach said was one of the fastest we’ve seen:

such a pretty background!

She got all the way around on this hit, meaning that she timed it well. One of the older siblings took credit for the hit, as she’d been working with Peyton on that. After the loss, Dave wanted to head down the mountain, as it was getting traffic heavy already. I texted the coach to let him know we were headed down there, and then I took a nap. This was Peyton’s second nap of the day. We arrived at the quick stop restaurant, and then the two coaches that were caravaning also stopped, along with another family who was 5 minutes behind us. We had another meal together before calling it a season. The mom called the girls, “Little”, Rayanna, Lauren and Peyton “the fab four”.
We made our way safely home, while Peyton took her third nap of the day. The weekend took its toll on her for sure!

Penultimate tourney

This past weekend marked the last time Peyton would get to play with her friend in 10U. It all happened that Dave ran into her step dad at Dick’s and they got to talking last fall. They were going to try out for this team, and Dave quickly got home to get Peyton ready to try out. “Just to see”. Turns out, she made the team, along with her two friends, and so was our introduction to “A” or travel ball.

The two girls played together two years ago, when Peyton first started summer softball, as a new 7 year old, playing with 8 and 9 year olds. They became fast friends, despite the almost exactly two year difference.

Her friend will miss next week, as she will be on a cruise and visit to WDW, so we can’t feel too bad for her. The tourney was local, at a friend’s high school, and where we’d played earlier in the spring. The first game, which should have been a win based on previous play against them, was a disaster, with us losing to them, 5-3. We’d previously played them, and won 10-2! She had a monster hit to the outfield, but unfortunately, it went right to the center fielder.

Coach even commented, “Nice hit! Too bad it was right at someone.”

The second game had a bit of a break after the first game. Dave stayed through the break, then he had to leave for Brandon’s baseball team party.

The second game started just after 4 pm, and it was getting hotter and hotter. Also, the parents of this team were rather annoying. I was sitting alone next to them, as they took over the area behind the backstop, my favorite spot to zone out behind the plate. One of the dads went as far as saying that “No one after (the number 5 spot) could hit”. Uh, Peyton is number 6 in the order. She got two base hits. One was reached on error

, but the other one was a solid base hit past the infield.

We ended up beating that team 5-3. The final game should have been a victory, but we blew the 3-0 lead that we had going into the final inning. We had seconds to go, and then another inning started, and they ended up coming back. They ended up coming back to tie it, putting us at 1-1-1 for the day. It felt like a loss, since we should’ve won that game. We were the 4th seed out of 7 going into the final day.

While I was sitting behind the backstop during game #3, the coach came up to me, and leaned against the fence, away from our own team’s “annoying” dad. He told me that some of the team were going to dinner, and if we were free, to go. I texted Dave, who was still at his party, but wrapping up, as it was almost 8 pm. He was free, so we headed to the restaurant, while they shot down the freeway, arriving just as we were being seated. The kids had their own table, while the adults all sat together. 8 girls, 1 boy (Brandon), and 5 sets of parents. We ended up getting our own private room, probably as they knew we were going to make lots of noise. We went to the Fish Market, but Peyton didn’t want fish. She ended up ordering chicken teriyaki. Brandon, who had eaten at his baseball party, went for round two, but shared some of his food with Peyton. The two ended up sitting next to each other, which was ridiculous, as there were so many other kids there! They ended up doing well together, and had a good time with the other kids.

We went home by 10 pm, and we had a 9 am game the following day. Showered, change, and bed. We got up Sunday to do it all over again, and to play the same team that we tied on Saturday. They were the 5th seed, so we had to play tough from the start! Well, convincingly, we did; the girls put together 11 runs. ANnoying dad’s kid didn’t show up on Sunday. She was “sick”. She dropped a ball in right field, which would have ended the inning, but ended up extending it.

The next game was to be played right after against my HS friend’s daughter’s team. I didn’t see her mom there, but I didn’t want to go look until after the game was done. They were a C team playing against our A team, as they were looking to get better competition before going to the State Championships next week in SD. I learned all this after we beat them 12-3, as I found my HS friend. We chatted a bit before the team went to the shade to relax. The final game was not going to start until 2 pm, and we had one more game to sit before they could start. It turned out that they would have to play the team that made the comments about Peyton not being able to hit, along with the other girls in the bottom of the order.
against my HS friend’s team:

She’s deceptive because she looks small, so the defense comes in on her. I have even captured it when the coaches will tell their defense to come in. The final game was a much closer one, 6-2, and we needed every run, because it could go south very quickly in these games with so many nerves. Fortunately, I was watching the time quickly expire, as we were on our last ups, but we’d just gotten a double play against us, so we had two outs. I We didn’t want to extend it into extra innings, as they never ends well for us. Finally, it was ball game, and we’d come away with the championship, something that we’d not done all season long!

We got the girls to take their pictures. We were in the car by 4 pm, and headed for one last hurrah for froyo. While we were driving there, Peyton asked Brandon, “So, how many first place medals do you have?”
Dave and I were shocked she asked! And we were trying to suppress laughter. He responded, “Well, none, but I have a lot of second place medals.” Peyton responded, “Oh, so do I.” I think she was truly trying to ask him for comparison, not to rub it in. But we thought it was savage! Here are the pictures:

Tourney Recap

Last Friday, Brandon had basketball clinic, while we brought Peyton to practice. We ended up spending 1.5 out of the 2 hours of clinic just on her batting and fielding. Dave had asked me to hit grounders to her, while he played first base, so she could practice the throw to first. He was getting frustrated with me for not hitting them directly to her, hitting too far out of her range, or not hitting hard enough to her. I commented that he was lucky I was making contact with the ball more than 75% of the time! And that I’d like him to practice piano with her in an attempt to make her better. Peyton chuckled at that. We went back to pick up Brandon from clinic (we were at a different part of the high school). The recruiter for the Asian league competitive team talked to Dave, this coming off the 4 night basketball camp that she just wrapped up earlier that week. He was talking to Dave about the upcoming team, which doesn’t even start until 6th grade! I think they are concerned about Peyton’s preference for softball, but otherwise, they offered her a spot on the team, one of three of the eight rising fourth graders that had come out earlier in the week. We talked about that in the car, while the kids were nodding off. We drove to my mom’s right after the clinic, as Peyton had a softball tourney in Sacramento. We arrived late Friday night, and my mom had accommodations all ready, both rooms were prepped upstairs. Brandon had his own room, while Peyton was going to take the trundle in the other room, with the full bed for Dave and me just above the trundle. While Dave was showering, Peyton was tossing and turning in the trundle, saying it was uncomfortable. She told me she was going to come up with me, and I told her she’d better do that before Dave was done. She scampered up to me, and was almost asleep when Dave came out and saw what was going on. She was half in her uniform, as we were to get up by 8 am to leave by 9 am. My mom had breakfast for us, and we all left together by just before 9. We got to the field in time, and we were all ready for hot weather ahead for the day. My mom picked the HOTTEST tournament to date this year to join us. One of the teammate’s moms asked if that was my mom, and she told me, “She is BEAUTIFUL!” I had introduced my mom to some but not all of the teammates/parents. She hung out with Brandon in the shade for the first game, then we ate lunch together in between games 2 and 3. After game 3, we headed back to the brewery that she had won a silent auction beer tasting for four. Three of us tasted, while the kids had cold root beer. It was refreshing! The kids played Uno, while we hung out until our dinner reservation. My mom made a reservation at Dingus McGee’s. Dingus is a name that the kids had been calling each other lately, as in “dodo”. The whole time we were at the restaurant, she was laughing at the mention of it. The kids shared a fettuccine alfredo with chicken and calamari, while I had a salad, my mom had fish and chips and Dave had prime rib. We ended dinner after sunset and with a chocolate lava cake paired with a candle, and we went home and showered up for the next day. Unfortunately, the next day’s field was further away, though on our way home. So, we had to get up by 515 am, to get out the door by 545 am, and then got coffee and to the field by 7 am. Dave made a stop for coffee, and I was going to go with him, though he pointed to the backseat, Peyton was still asleep. She fell asleep when we got to the freeway from my mom’s. I had previously told me mom she didn’t have to go with us, since it was about 1 hour from her house. Her immediate response, after sitting in the sun for almost 8 hours the day before, “No SH*@!” Because Brandon was hanging on her, she quickly changed it to, “I mean, NO KIDDING.” She did get up to help us out of the car. The first game on Sunday was much better than the previous day’s games. We ended up winning by 6-7 runs, with Peyton driving in 2 of those runs on a double.

I updated my mom while the game was in progress.

Then, the next game wasn’t until 1230pm. The girls had a big break, so they busted out Uno cards, and almost all of them participated in the game. They all stayed in the shade, ate lunch, and relaxed in between games, then came back out to play at 1230 pm. They got off to an early lead up by 5 runs! Then, somehow the momentum shifted, and slowly runs were given up. Later, the other team came up to tie the game, sending the game into an international tie breaker. Initially, they had called Peyton to go run from second, but later, swapped her out for the player that was last batted out. It was stressful, and things didn’t go the way we were hoping. Partially, the team parents were happy to leave the field by 2 pm, as opposed to staying until the 330 pm game, but also, we were hoping the girls would find a way to pull out the win! We drove the rest of the way home, got showered up, and felt the temperature drop about 25 degrees, as it was about 75 here at home. Dave found tickets to the Incredibles 2, and we headed to the movies! We’re trying to live it up during our summer break. I took Monday off, so I wasn’t worried about having to wake them up. They did get out of the house by 830 am, and I watched their swim lessons, one at a time. I then walked back home, leaving my car there, so I could build in exercise. I cleaned up, did 3 loads of laundry, and also studied for my recertification and completed a packet from that. I went to pick the kids up, and came home to do their work. Dave came home, and we all went back out on the field to hit with the kids. Brandon got two new bats for the upcoming season, so he was testing them out. We went to Dicks and saw one of Peyton’s teammates there! We met up for dinner after their errands

Tuesday, we did the same thing, but this time it was after I worked all day. She’s trying to get ready for the next two weekends, when they have tourneys in South SJ and in Tahoe. Then the “season” will come to an end. The kids got to talk to their cousins, Uncle Jeff and Auntie Meg, for Abby’s bday. We tried on Monday, but we got to her too late, and she was already asleep. We aren’t able to meet up with them this summer, as we have in years past, as our next free weekend is Labor day weekend, and they will be back home by then.

Here are the pictures from the weekend:

Tourney of Champions

Brandon’s team won their division, beating a coach that Brandon had had in all stars a few years ago. He’s always been a thorn in Dave’s side, though the coach is rather tame against Dave. But the coach is a hot head, and they had to beat a bunch of friends that are mostly a year younger. They had played them throughout the season, and finally, last Wednesday, they won their game. It was a double elimination tourney, so they put the final dagger in their season last week. That meant Brandon’s team got to represent the league in district play. Their first game was Thursday, but Peyton had practice. Based on Dave’s string of texts, I thought they lost. Peyton and I ate dinner at in and out, and we saw Brandon’s teammate’s sister, who told me they won! So, we went over to where the boys were, as they were headed back after trying to have dinner close to where they won. But SCU had just let out for the summer, so the hang out was crowded with college kids. The team hung out at the local joint. While we were there, we saw Peyton’s coach’s coworkers, as identified by Brandon’s coach, who also works with them. We tried to get Peyton to take a picture with them, but she wouldn’t. We tried to bribe her, and she declined; she wouldn’t budge. Brandon agreed to take a photo with her. Soon after, the girls’ softball team comprised of girls that Peyton played last year, when she was playing up. They are all Brandon’s age, and they were there to hang out, too. So we got a picture with her, which was more of a willing picture, with no bribes involved. Dave was excited to beat the league where one of Brandon’s travel team coach coaches (one of the coaches that has daddy ball issues). Round 2 of the redemption series, after beating the coach within our league.

Today, the second round of the TOCs was being played. Dave went to work in the morning, waking Peyton up by 630 am. She crawled into bed seemingly wide awake. I entertained her awareness for thirty minutes or so, playing my phone games before realizing I’d be too tired if I gave in. Soon, I heard the door slam shut. It was 830 and Peyton had fallen back asleep. The fam wasn’t until 130 so we had time to play piano and math for a bit. My dad, a Yankee fan, came down to watch, wearing Yankees gear. We went early, and while Dave and Brandon warmed up, we walked to get boba and lunch. Peyton was happy to chit chat, to the point I had to hurry her so we could go back to the game. We made it back for the introductions, announcements and national anthem. They were playing at the home field of yet more of Brandon’s teammates. In fact, the one calling out the players’ names was one of his travel teammates.

Here are the boys’ introductions:
The team we were playing today had 3 of the travel teammates, with another coach with a kid on the travel team, who is also vying for Brandon’s spot. Dave wanted to beat them, as well, to make a statement.

The team dropped 5 runs in the first inning, with bone-headed plays. Brandon was playing first base the whole game. Fortunately, he made the plays that were needed, and he didn’t have any errors. The team made a valiant attempt to come back, getting as close as 7-9, but they couldn’t rally the team to the end.

Peyton’s recap

Saturday morning, our carpool came to get us at 830 am. We ran into a bit of traffic, and we were a little late, but arrived safe and sound.

The girls had three games, at 11 am, 2 pm and 630 pm. We had picnic style food, and the girls ate in between games. Peyton has been struggling with batting, but in the second game, she hit a big one!

She unfortunately ran into the tag at third as she realized she wouldn’t make it. Too bad! It was 3 outs by then. She said she didn’t cry (That was the way she was going to get to watch A League of Their Own, as I’d shown her a portion of the “No crying in baseball” clip.)

The team was really down in the middle game, and she came into pitch. She did okay, and fortunately didn’t get hit by a come backer like her teammate did against the third team they played. She was afraid to pitch after that.

Sunday’s game started at 8 am, meaning we had a 530 am wake up call. Peyton was texting Dave while I showered up, giving him a summary from her perspective. He was trying to cheer her up, and give her a pep talk for Sunday. They had two games on Sunday before we were out of there by midday.

Dave had ribs going, but our carpool had to go home, since the dad had to work. The girls won’t remember the scores of the games, but they will remember hanging out, playing charades in the grass, and having a great time with one another. They also hung out with the older team, who helped them warm up and got their spirits up.

Long Weekend

The weekend was the same amount of time, but the activities were aplenty. We started Friday night with practice for Peyton. On Saturday, we started at 8 am with Peyton’s city league game. Ryan came to pick us up, and we expected a whole vanful of girls, however H was sick. She was sick for Friday night’s practice, and they wanted to keep her healthy for next weekend. She was feeling well, changed her clothes, got her hair done, then sniffled, and that was the dagger that kept her home. She was crying as her dad left the house. So sad! Peyton played minimal time for Saturday’s game, but she did manage to score. It wasn’t the same without her “partner in crime”. From that game, we headed straight up to the city. Poor Brandon had his first baseball game, in the first tourney of the season. His game wasn’t until 245 pm, and Peyton’s games were at 11 am and 1 pm. We had another family pick him up from home. They originally were going to pick him up at 115 pm, so he could make it just to one hour before the game for warm ups, but they realized their second son had a basketball game around 12 pm. So, they picked Brandon up at 1115 am (he was updating me by text), took him to get lunch (which we’d given him money for), and then the two boys hung out at their house, playing with nerf guns. Peyton’s game was tough in the City. It was a team that they’d played and beaten before, however at this weekend’s game, Peyton’s team had 6 kids, while the other team had 12 kids! They had fresh substitutions with each break. Well, it was a sad game, and this time the score was being kept by the scorekeeper. I think it was 22-5, and Peyton scored with 1:50 to play. Oof.

We had a one hour break. We had spam musubis for snack, and enjoyed some outside time. It wasn’t as warm as the previous week, but it was still pleasant out. I chatted with my pharmacy school classmate, whose husband went to high school with one of our team’s dads. Small world. The second game was much better. Peyton’s teammate scored the first 4 baskets! There was lots of clean passing and more scoring involved. They ended up pulling out the victory with 22-14.

After the games, we went to get some pork buns, which were hot at the time, then we headed back home. Peyton and I took a nap on the way back down. When we got home, we quickly changed, grabbed warm clothes, and headed off to Brandon’s game. We got there in the 5th inning, and it wrapped up within 20 minutes. The team lost, but some of the teammates went to a local restaurant to hang out in the 2 hour break that they had.

The sun went down for the second game, and luckily, the game was attached to the clubhouse. We watched the first half from inside. Then, Dave was outside, telling us to come out. Peyton was doing homework, which another dad had noticed at dinner and commented, “Is she doing homework?” (She had a laptop and her Native American project notes.) I told him that she was too busy during the week to get this done, so she had to get it done over the weekend. He admired her for her hard work, especially on a Saturday. What he didn’t know was that this third grader has more homework than her sixth grade brother. She finished up Saturday’s work and was able to watch from the grandstands.

Here is the hit we saw from up high.

My mom was able to watch the game from the camera that was broadcasting the game. The team was up 11-3, but somehow squandered the lead in an unfortunate 2 out rally. Time ran out, and the game was called when the final run came in, for the other team to go up 11-12. Darn. But that meant that the team would play again at 245 pm.

The kids got to bed by almost 10 pm, and up by 7 am to do it all over again. Peyton went to softball practice at 9 am. We all went, but in two cars, since Dave had to leave to take Brandon to his basketball game, in SF, by 1230 pm. Peyton practiced from 9 to 1130 am, while Dave left around 11 am. We finished up with practice, and she went home to practice piano and eat lunch, as she had her piano performance party from 1-3 pm. Brandon had his baseball game at 245 pm, and he arrived with 15 minutes to spare, since he was coming from SF. Sheesh, these kids. Peyton’s coach told me she’s not allowed to miss practice anymore, as “it’s better when she’s here.” I didn’t know what that meant, but I guess it’s a compliment. And that she needs to know these things that they are teaching her.

I dropped her off at piano, and I went to get my steps in. I walked around the middle school, and it started to get cold just before I needed to leave to get her. They were done with their playing and enjoying snacks. We left from there to get to Brandon’s game. It was super cold, and even after bundling up with the blanket that now lives in my car, we were freezing. We had both our hoods up and tied tightly, under the blanket, with Peyton on my lap, and it was still cold. “Luckily” the team was put out of their misery with a mercy-rule 15-0 loss after less than an hour. We headed to all you can eat Korean food after that, and both kids ate their share! Brandon enjoyed the squid and wanted to order a second plate (which we did). Peyton was happy to eat it as well, and even had some spicier meat since it was so tasty, and she was so hungry. We wrapped up the evening with some Olympics before the kids went to bed. Another weekend in the books!so far from the boy!
