Penultimate tourney

This past weekend marked the last time Peyton would get to play with her friend in 10U. It all happened that Dave ran into her step dad at Dick’s and they got to talking last fall. They were going to try out for this team, and Dave quickly got home to get Peyton ready to try out. “Just to see”. Turns out, she made the team, along with her two friends, and so was our introduction to “A” or travel ball.

The two girls played together two years ago, when Peyton first started summer softball, as a new 7 year old, playing with 8 and 9 year olds. They became fast friends, despite the almost exactly two year difference.

Her friend will miss next week, as she will be on a cruise and visit to WDW, so we can’t feel too bad for her. The tourney was local, at a friend’s high school, and where we’d played earlier in the spring. The first game, which should have been a win based on previous play against them, was a disaster, with us losing to them, 5-3. We’d previously played them, and won 10-2! She had a monster hit to the outfield, but unfortunately, it went right to the center fielder.

Coach even commented, “Nice hit! Too bad it was right at someone.”

The second game had a bit of a break after the first game. Dave stayed through the break, then he had to leave for Brandon’s baseball team party.

The second game started just after 4 pm, and it was getting hotter and hotter. Also, the parents of this team were rather annoying. I was sitting alone next to them, as they took over the area behind the backstop, my favorite spot to zone out behind the plate. One of the dads went as far as saying that “No one after (the number 5 spot) could hit”. Uh, Peyton is number 6 in the order. She got two base hits. One was reached on error

, but the other one was a solid base hit past the infield.

Even gave me a neck roll, then said, “You mean, no one after ME can hit!” I didn’t share THAT part with her teammates’ parents, but I certainly told them what the other dad had said. We ended up beating that team 5-3. The final game should have been a victory, but we blew the 3-0 lead that we had going into the final inning. We had seconds to go, and then another inning started, and they ended up coming back. They ended up coming back to tie it, putting us at 1-1-1 for the day. It felt like a loss, since we should’ve won that game. We were the 4th seed out of 7 going into the final day.

While I was sitting behind the backstop during game #3, the coach came up to me, and leaned against the fence, away from our own team’s “annoying” dad. He told me that some of the team were going to dinner, and if we were free, to go. I texted Dave, who was still at his party, but wrapping up, as it was almost 8 pm. He was free, so we headed to the restaurant, while they shot down the freeway, arriving just as we were being seated. The kids had their own table, while the adults all sat together. 8 girls, 1 boy (Brandon), and 5 sets of parents. We ended up getting our own private room, probably as they knew we were going to make lots of noise. We went to the Fish Market, but Peyton didn’t want fish. She ended up ordering chicken teriyaki. Brandon, who had eaten at his baseball party, went for round two, but shared some of his food with Peyton. The two ended up sitting next to each other, which was ridiculous, as there were so many other kids there! They ended up doing well together, and had a good time with the other kids.

We went home by 10 pm, and we had a 9 am game the following day. Showered, change, and bed. We got up Sunday to do it all over again, and to play the same team that we tied on Saturday. They were the 5th seed, so we had to play tough from the start! Well, convincingly, we did; the girls put together 11 runs. ANnoying dad’s kid didn’t show up on Sunday. She was “sick”. She dropped a ball in right field, which would have ended the inning, but ended up extending it.

The next game was to be played right after against my HS friend’s daughter’s team. I didn’t see her mom there, but I didn’t want to go look until after the game was done. They were a C team playing against our A team, as they were looking to get better competition before going to the State Championships next week in SD. I learned all this after we beat them 12-3, as I found my HS friend. We chatted a bit before the team went to the shade to relax. The final game was not going to start until 2 pm, and we had one more game to sit before they could start. It turned out that they would have to play the team that made the comments about Peyton not being able to hit, along with the other girls in the bottom of the order.

She’s deceptive because she looks small, so the defense comes in on her. I have even captured it when the coaches will tell their defense to come in. The final game was a much closer one, 6-2, and we needed every run, because it could go south very quickly in these games with so many nerves. Fortunately, I was watching the time quickly expire, as we were on our last ups, but we’d just gotten a double play against us, so we had two outs. I We didn’t want to extend it into extra innings, as they never ends well for us. Finally, it was ball game, and we’d come away with the championship, something that we’d not done all season long!

We got the girls to take their pictures. We were in the car by 4 pm, and headed for one last hurrah for froyo. While we were driving there, Peyton asked Brandon, “So, how many first place medals do you have?”
Dave and I were shocked she asked! And we were trying to suppress laughter. He responded, “Well, none, but I have a lot of second place medals.” Peyton responded, “Oh, so do I.” I think she was truly trying to ask him for comparison, not to rub it in. But we thought it was savage! Here are the pictures:
