Today may mark the end of Dave’s head coaching era. We showed up at 750 am, and the other team did not. That meant we got our first victory! Well, the boys didn’t see it that way. They played a scrimmage game, though they really wanted a piece of the refs. The refs just took a breather, and Dave called fouls and the kids helped the refs keep score in between their chit-chatting. So many parents were cheering for Brandon to shoot the ball whenever he had it. There were a couple of other kids who’d never scored either who were encouraged to score. Dave tried to spread the kids out, and he tried to pass the ball to those who had never taken a shot before. The kids really had fun. Even more fun was the celebration breakfast after the game. All 10 kids showed up, and it was cute to see them all interact. Of course, Peyton wanted in there, too, so she hung around the boys as they were doing whatever games and looking at phones, etc. Finally, as Dave was passing out the pictures and medals, Jonathan asked him, “Will you be my coach again next year?” It was really sweet. All the families thanked him for coaching, and all the players signed a card for him. The families chipped in and donated a present to Coach, too. It was perfect, since he needed groceries anyway! I think it was a great experience for him, and it remains to be seen whether he will do it again. He says he is more assistant coach material, as I was trying to coach him to say something nice about each player before handing them their medal. Instead, he handed it to them with a “Great season” (short and sweet, so his style!) Peyton and I headed over to ballet, while the boys headed in another direction. She participated about 50%, so she didn’t quite get her earned treats. She got to go to Sydney’s party, which we did after changing her clothes yet again (she had been in 3 different outfits before 12 pm). We made a beeline to Sydney, and Peyton wished her happy birthday, and then she and Orion took off to play games. Each had a little bucket of coins, and they had a great time. Orion’s mom and I just chatted away, while watching the girls. We had to intervene on a few occasions, to help them work things out, but mostly they got along. Pizza was shortly thereafter, and then cake. Peyton said, “Sydney told us she was having an Oreo cake.” And sure enough, there was Oreo cake! We’d shared a piece of cake at Brandon’s party, knowing that there would probably be cake at Sydney’s. Peyton amazed me by only eating about 3/4 of a piece (usually she eats the whole thing!) She asked for water, and drank only that. I think she was too excited to get back to playing that she didn’t want to finish her cake. She did have a meltdown when she waited in line for the ticket blaster (it’s an air chamber where you grab as many tickets as you can), and then was told it was only for the birthday guest. We saw as one boy got a ticket in the eye, so I convinced her she didn’t want to do that anyway. I lured her away with the prospect of more tickets while playing games. She was okay with that. Peyton went up to both Sydney and her mom and said, “Thank you!” and even wished Sydney another happy birthday. Sydney told us she was staying 😉 I had a bit of trouble getting an over-tired Peyton to sleep at 3pm, but she finally crashed on the floor in her room. It is definitely NOT pretty when she is in need of a nap and isn’t able to get it. Now that she is awake, I’ve given her back her magic wand that she got from collecting her tickets. Here are pictures from both events
Library Time!
After picking Brandon up from chess, we went home to do some homework. He did the rest of the homework for the week, so he didn’t have to do it at night, otherwise no basketball in the morning. I also told him Ms Tarez had something for him, but he needed to finish up first, so that was good motivation, too. He did keep reminding me that we had to go get Peyton. We met up with Ms Tarez before going into Peyton’s class. He got a snack of goldfish, and then chatted with her, and later thanked her for the gift she gave him (Angry Birds t-shirt) for his belated birthday gift. We headed to get Peyton, but Brandon stayed outside, since he was eating. Zane noticed me first, and told Peyton I was there. She got up to leave, and said bye to Zane, and then another girl said bye when we were at the door, and Peyton blindly called back, “Bye, Navya!” I was surprised they can recognize each other’s voices, as I didn’t know where or who it was coming from (and I know Navya!). Peyton asked why Brandon didn’t come inside her classroom. She was okay with my answer, but just thought it was weird, I guess. As soon as they saw each other, the bickering ensued. I warned them that I did have to go to the library, and if they wanted to go inside for more books, they had to be quiet and respectful to one another. That made for a quiet ride to the library. They took turns scanning the books back in the outside area. When I only had 9 books, and Brandon was given the last one, Peyton took it upon herself to get the receipt, just to even things out. We headed inside, and it was Peyton’s turn first to grab her books. She is allowed 10, since hers are usually shorter, and she has not yet lost one. Brandon is allowed 5, since his are longer, and we had to look around the house for one of his one time. But she is okay with that. Brandon deliberates. And deliberates. By this time, I have 10 books in the bag, weighing me down. He asked the librarian for Pokemon books, since this is what another friend likes. When we were sent to the graphic novel area, I told him they were just comic books, and I didn’t want him to get them. He explained, “Well, they’re just for my entertainment!” I couldn’t really argue with that, so I compromised, and told him he could pick two. The other three books had to be novels. He often has book reports that require a story and characters, so he can’t really get those with non-fiction, of which we have plenty. He picked two Geronimo Stilton books and one Goosebumps, which I think will give him nightmares. Off we went to the car. Both kids had their own books, and neither needed reminders to be quiet or keep their hands off the other. Just the idea of something new to read is enough for both of them to be quiet for the drive home. Now, we have three more weeks of book-reading before going to exchange them again. I did re-new Little Mermaid and Pete’s Dragon, since we didn’t get a chance to watch them, as they are only allowed to watch TV on the weekends. We sent them off to bed early, since Brandon has an 8 am basketball game, followed by the team breakfast party, Peyton’s ballet, then Sydney’s party. Phew!
Coffee with the Principal
Today, we all stayed at home until Brandon’s flag salute. Peyton was excited to attend “Coffee with the Principal” with me. I had her all geared up with coloring books and worksheets to keep her quiet. I had her come to the office to me for me to drop off a donation for the classroom, and as we did, she saw Brandon’s teacher from last year. She told me, “Mommy, there’s Ms Song!” Ms. Song heard her, and she walked toward us to say hello. Peyton then shut down! She wouldn’t say hi to her, though Ms. Song called her by name, as she remembered her from last year. She did answer one of her questions, but I don’t recall what it was, since I was trying to get Peyton to just respond already. She already knows she can talk, since she heard her. We went back to watch the assembly, and then headed to the auditorium. Brandon didn’t want me to go, since he heard they give out BIG DONUTS, and they aren’t good for you. I told him I didn’t think that was true, and that if they did, I wouldn’t eat any. Luckily, there were no donuts, and it was a small group, about 10 of us. There was another little boy there with his mom, but she had a harder time keeping him quiet. She was pretty quiet for the most part, other than showing me a finished product each time she completed a sheet. She was less cooperative when we took a site tour of some proposed fencing that will be placed around the school. She followed for a little bit, then just hung out at the back. At that point, I knew it was our time to go. We headed to school, and I reminded her she was a big girl and that there was no reason to cry when I dropped her off. I’d reminded her that we were going in later, and she was okay with that because she knew she’d get to stay for flag salute. I told her that Brandon and I would pick her up, since Ms Tarez had something to give him for a belated birthday gift. It was around 930 am, and the kids were already in circle time. She slowly headed that way after I gave her a hug, and then she said, “Bye, Mommy,” without even looking back. I gave a thumbs up to the teacher, and went about my business, back to work. I’ll pick Brandon up from Chess Club, do some homework, then come back to get her.
Charmer
This week has been a bit rough with Peyton, who has been on and off listening to us. This morning, she did get dressed on her own, without much reminding. She needed help with her zipper, so she asked me nicely to help her. As I was zippering her up, she looked up at me and said, “I love you, Mommy.” She was so sincere and sweet; she was like a whole different kid from earlier the evening before. She definitely does better when she naps; it seems to keep her on a better schedule somehow.

Celebrate! Testing Me? LONG day…
This was the conversation this morning with Peyton:
P: And I will be 5 in 2014 (we were talking about upcoming birthday parties of girls turning 4).
R: And what should we do for your birthday?
P: I dunno, celebrate maybe?
R: OH. Okay. I think we can do that.

Brandon brought his Scholastic books home from school today. The kids were looking through it, and I got an Abraham Lincoln book for $1. Peyton saw it, and she remembered learning about him at D-land. I asked her if she remembered which president he was. She started with 11, then worked her way up to the right answer. She said, “I only know Lincoln and Obama.” I told her she knew Washington, our first president. Then she said, “Who was #2?” I had to stop and think, then responded, “John Adams.” Then I knew what was coming, “Who was number 3?” “Thomas Jefferson (proud of myself!).” Then, she wouldn’t stop. So, I told her, “We should look it up.” Luckily, she agreed. And now, while blogging, I’m wiki-ing the list of former presidents.
Today, Brandon had baseball practice, his first for the season. Dave picked him up, and they headed over. Luckily, it was close by, within walking distance to the house. I picked Peyton up, and since she is a slow-poke, I told her to eat dinner before we could head over to watch practice. She ate her food, drank her milk, and even had a few strawberries before bundling up for the walk over. We got there, and she immediately went over to the climbing structures. She said she could see Dave since he was the only one wearing shorts. I spotted her for most of the time, then we headed over to the team. They have two girls on their team, so I think it’s a good influence for Peyton to watch them, too. Dave stayed behind to chat with the parents and introduce himself, I’m sure, while I walked both kids back home. After practice, he was going on to a coaches’ clinic/seminar, so he wouldn’t be around for our nighttime routine.  I gave Peyton a bath, while Brandon ate the food I’d warmed up for him. I took turns climbing up and down the stairs to get both kids what they needed. Peyton finished changing her clothes, while I fed Brandon round two of dinner. He bathed, while I read to Peyton, then it was lights out for her. Brandon finished up his math homework, then I read him the same book Peyton read (Lincoln). We finished up right before 8 pm, later than usual, but not too shabby considering I was solo. I turned to leave Brandon’s room, and I saw Peyton’s dog staring at me in the hallway. It was like watching Poltergeist or something, and I was a bit creeped out, since I didn’t even see or hear her put it there. She had it pointing into Brandon’s room, and it is a life-sized small dog! She later came out to retrieve it, so I knew it was her that put it there (really, there was no one else, but it was just so creepy, watching us like that). Now it’s lights out for both, and hopefully they go to sleep soon, since Brandon will have another long day of basketball practice tomorrow night. Luckily, this is the only week we have this schedule. I feel like I’m over-scheduled!
Improvement
Peyton had a better day at school today, earning a reward card. Julie tells me that Peyton goes up to her each day and shows her her shirt. She will unzip her hoodie or outer wear and show her what she is wearing. She doesn’t talk, but will nod or smile. This is definite progress. Sometimes, she even gets a tummy shot! Peyton also stayed in her room during bedtime, even after I left for the gym. She was very proud of the fact that she took a nap at school, too. She is working toward earning the books I’d gotten her at the last book fair.
Sunday Workday
Today, Dave woke up right at 7am and headed out to garden and clean up our front area. The kids wanted to watch TV, and since it was the weekend, we let them. While they watched a movie from the library (Snow White), I vacuumed the house. I tried to put on another movie, but neither was interested. I decided to turn it off, and they found their own things to do. Brandon went to get some activity books, while Peyton looked over his shoulder. I told her to get her own, so she found hers, too. They had the crayons and pencils out in between them. I encouraged them to share or the crayons would be taken away. I only heard them chit-chatting, and no bickering! We didn’t finish up our chores until about 1130am, at which time I told Dave it was time to go out to do our errands. We headed separate directions, as the boys needed to buy a birthday present for Brandon’s friend, while Peyton and I had some more grocery shopping to do at Costco. We shopped a bit, but the only thing she wanted to do was check out books. So, I made that our last stop, after getting everything on our list. She pointed to exactly where the kids’ books were. She wanted to see the workbooks, too. So I let her look for a bit, then picked up workbooks for both kids. She put the book down only long enough for it to be scanned, then she was reaching back into the cart to get it. It kept her entertained while I waited for gas, and then on our ride back home. I’d given her a pen, and she was happy to do the sheets. I told her she could do more after her nap. We went home, and I fixed her lunch. She asked me if I was joining her, but I told her to sleep on her own. I fell asleep on the couch, but she came down after about an hour and a half. She then prompted me to go read her book with her. So, we worked at the table. Soon enough, Brandon and Dave got home. He was so excited to show me his Pokemon cards that he’d gotten. They had related games all in the Pokemon theme. Dave stayed along with the boys, and it was a small group of 4 of them, along with the birthday boy’s sister. Dave got to chat with the parents, since he was the only other parent that stayed. He wasn’t sure that it was a “drop-it-off” party, and didn’t want to seem too eager to do so, so he hung out there. Brandon had two pieces of pizza, some carrots, fruit, water and a cupcake. He also stuffed a gummy worm into his mouth like the other boys and got the dirty look from Dave. He only managed one, so that wasn’t too bad, I supposed. Dave went to finish up the rest of the gardening, while I had the kids with their books again. Eventually, Dave came back inside, and it was dinner time. Brandon went down for bed easily, but Peyton “lingered” and was a pain to get down. It does seem to flip-flop with those two, and for now, Peyton is our “problem child”. We’re going to have to work more on that with her!
Math Facts
Brandon has been practicing math facts since the beginning of the school year. Most days of the week, he is time-tested. He started with addition, and went from A-Z. Now he’s on subtraction, and working his way through the middle of the alphabet. He is required to practice for 10 minutes each day. We’d printed out worksheets from his teacher, and then he also has the program online.  He didn’t know how to add and subtract until last year, so I decided to teach Peyton a little earlier. So, I’ve been printing out worksheets for her to do. She LOVES them. In fact, when she was All uk viagra prices of us are familiar to being subject to the feelings of fear, distress, obsessive-compulsive disorder and anger. Independence
Dave’s always pushed the kids to be more independent, to do things for themselves. I call it being more “marriable”, but he just doesn’t want to have to do everything for them. But sometimes, it’s a bit much. This morning, neither of us wanted to get up to get the kids breakfast. Brandon took it upon himself to get his own. And Peyton was there, so I suppose he helped her, too. We heard them get their own stuff set up, apparently, as Peyton was giving us a play by play. “Brandon’s got the cereal! He’s pouring the milk now!” Then it was, “Brandon, I want some, let me do it!” And then, “Brandon, too many nuts!” Brandon was pretty quiet through all this, so that was something concerning, too. There was really no remnant of them having served their own breakfast, but when I went to the refrigerator, both milks (his Lactaid and her gallon) had been put back empty or near-empty. Definitely not the worst thing that could have happened! I can’t remember how old we were when we started feeding ourselves, but I do remember we weren’t tall enough to reach the box, so we had to climb on the counters. Luckily, Brandon is tall enough to reach the container.
