First Day of Summer!

Okay, so it’s not much different on my end, but for Brandon, camp session has started at CDC. Peyton and I dropped him off with just a sun-blocked body and face, no back pack, and more importantly no lunch that I have to pack! I was so excited that I left my phone at home. Oops. I emailed Dave and my mom and told them both, since they are the ones most likely to get a hold of me during the day. I went about my day, which was hectic as one of my colleagues is out of the office for 3 weeks, and another will be leaving next week. I picked Peyton up, then we headed to pick up my phone, and THEN Brandon. Yes, priorities. I went home to get the phone to tell Dave that I was getting Brandon. Dave was home already by that time, and I fixed the kids something quick to eat before going to meet our new piano teacher. Brandon said he was hungry, and I couldn’t make him sit through the meeting while hungry. I briefly explained Peyton’s previous piano lessons, and she took Peyton first. Peyton was quiet when the teacher was asking her questions about note value. She had to lead her to the note names, and then slowly Peyton started to answer what the notes were worth. She asked her to identify the keys on the piano, and she was able to with encouragement. Later, they played some of the songs that were from the workbook I’d brought. Peyton got to pick a song, and then the teacher watched her play it (2-3 bars). After about 10-15 minutes, it was Brandon’s turn. Brandon had no previous training, so she started with flash cards. She had Brandon write the notes, their names, and then draw pictures on the back corresponding how many beats were to be counted. Then, she introduced finger numbering, which he picked up on quickly. She used a wipe board, and he labelled each finger correctly. She then introduced him to the keyboard with black keys and white keys, and then the piano alphabet. He was able to find the C, F, and keys in between. We’ll have to review those more, but he seemed to grasp the concept well. After his 15 minutes, we talked more about scheduling. She will email us the schedule, and then go from there. We’d driven there because I wasn’t sure how far away it was, but it’s almost harder to get there driving versus walking. We’d have to give ourselves a bit more time though, but it’s a nice walk. We headed home, and both kids seemed to enjoy going to the piano teacher. When we got home, Brandon ate the rest of his food that he’d left over, and then we headed out for a quick delivery. Dave had some coffee he wanted Ted to try, and since Michelle and I never see each other “live”, Dave wanted to drive it up. Yes, HE wanted to drive. In his car. The novelty hasn’t worn off. So, we headed up, and the kids were excited to see each other. They took off in different directions, while Ted and Dave chatted. Michelle and I chatted and I got to talk to Mckayla about her triathlon as well as the Junior Olympics. Peyton was too busy with the ipod, and I had to convince her to go play with people and NOT electronics. At some point, she came over to me and handed me her stinky socks. She doesn’t like hot feet! We stayed long enough to see Marcus come out in his outfit. He was so excited to show us, he put it on backwards! All the kids got a kick out of him putting back on the right way. It was our time to head out, and we thanked the kids for a quick, but good time. We still had to get home and get the kids bathed. Brandon has summer assignments, and he had yet to do them. So, we worked on his spelling, math, and worksheets of his choosing. Tomorrow, he’ll read his book, then we’ll head out for some fun. Hopefully it warms up a bit, and we can head to the pool. We’re starting off with a late night, as it’s almost 9:30 pm, and both kids are still talking! I told them both there was no rush to wake up tomorrow. Let’s see who listens. I know Peyton will probably sleep in, as she’s been wanting to all week.
