First Piano Lesson

Today was our first official piano lessons. We made it home by 5 pm, and we had the kids eat dinner quickly. Peyton and I left first, on foot, while Dave stayed home with Brandon to finish up his homework for this evening. I gave us 23 minutes to get there, and we ended up getting there in only 10 minutes. Peyton was very excited to go to piano. Right as we arrived at the house, we saw one of the moms from Brandon’s school come by on her bike with her daughter in tow. They were on the sidewalk. After they rode by, Peyton asked who it was (since she called me out by name). I told her it was my friend. She played around a bit, and then said, “Mommy, that’s not safe, Mommy.” I asked her what was not safe. She said, “Well, first of all, your friend wasn’t wearing a helmet. And THEN, they were riding on the sidewalk.” I did tell her that it wasn’t safe, and that I was glad she was aware. Peyton was getting antsy standing outside the house, and called into the house, “Hurry up, I want to go to piano!” Soon, a mom pulled up into the driveway, and we followed her in. She was picking up TWO rambunctious boys, probably 4 and 6. The door was opened, and they were jumping around like little puppies waiting to be picked up. Peyton was a bit thrown off, not knowing what to think. We took our shoes off, then headed inside. It was warm, having walked there. Peyton sat up on the piano bench right away. Ms M was showing her the new books she got us. She was asking Peyton to write her name on the book, and she did it. She reviewed the note values again, and Peyton did a better job of answering her. She was still quiet, but she did answer. She did a great job for 30 minutes! Dave was texting me, as they were headed over to the house after us. They arrived and were outside of the house right before it was Brandon’s turn. Brandon said hi to the dog; well, the dog came up to Brandon, who was very still, and the dog said hi to him. We switched kids, and Peyton left with Dave. Dave had seen two of Peyton’s teammates at the park, so he brought Peyton back to play with them. Brandon did a good job focusing, even though the teacher’s niece and nephew were messing around in the house (they are visiting from Korea). He played the same things that Peyton did. Funny, last week, Ms. M told me she was going to get different books for the kids because they were different ages, but she ended up using the same for both kids. She just told Brandon that she’d treat him like a big kid, and not like a little one. But I realize that even though we had a recreation class, and it was super cheap, she did get a good foundation. It could also be the music class in school, but she’s definitely a step ahead of Brandon. I’m looking forward to what they will learn! Both accepted the homework that was given to them, and they were told to practice. Both nodded in agreement. Brandon and I headed home. He said he had a good time, and was enthusiastic about it. While we were walking, we ran into Peyton and Dave coming home from the park. They had seen Reid and Kira again.
I asked Peyton if she wanted to do Girl Scouts or TKD. She replied, “Girl scouts.” There is an introductory meeting this weekend that I intend to attend. It’s a carnival style, but I was told already that there are no troops for Peyton’s age at her school now. If I wanted to have her in a troop, I’d have to start my own. EEK! My mom was my troop leader for a year when I was a brownie. And I never liked it. My mom always took my supplies from home to let the girls use. I was too anal for that; the marker tops weren’t put back in place or missing, my stickers, etc. And they were my friends! (Some of whom I’m friends with til this day!) So, maybe I will bite the bullet and be a troop leader. I’ll definitely have to recruit. Let’s see what happens at the faire on Sunday.
