First Game of the Season

We all went to the art and wine festival this morning. Dave wanted to drink, so we walked around for a bit. Actually, I had wanted to try the sangria, but I was afraid to drink alone with just Peyton and me yesterday. And I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to drink the whole glass, so he “helped” me today. Actually, I drank the whole thing, since he doesn’t like fruity, but it took me awhile to drink it. We stopped to eat, since I needed that to make it through the glass and the kids were hungry. We stayed for awhile then we headed home. Dave and Brandon headed out for the game, while Peyton and I slept. I set my alarm, and it woke both of us up. She dragged a bit, but we headed out soon. I planned to walk with her, and it was slightly further than our normal park – 2.25 miles! Yes she complained! But yes, we did make it. We got there around the 3rd inning. She ate her chips that she’d picked up at the festival. She’s without electronics, so I’d brought her math coloring. It keeps her pretty entertained, and she can do it more or less independently. I was able to watch most of Brandon’s game. They were playing the yelling coach from this summer. So, when Brandon got up, the coach told his player, “Big hitter,” and moved his defense back. Brandon swung early on the first two pitches, fouling them upward. I knew he wanted to get all of it. The third hit was a monster shot past the right fielder, and that’s probably going to be the best it can, since Dave is his pitcher. Dave’s pitched to Brandon probably 1000 times in his lifetime, so they are both in sync with one another. Dave told me that one of the dads noticed that Dave pitches way faster to Brandon than he does with the rest of the kids. Brandon was excited because he broke up a potential 3 up 3 down inning. The opposing coach was going to treat the players to ice cream if they got three outs in a row. Brandon crushed that opportunity for them, and ended up on third. He legitimately got to second, standing up, but the kids over-threw second, and Brandon took third. He was playing catcher for two innings, which he’d been gearing up for. Dave was using him as his test subject to try out the pads he’d purchased for the team. Our team’s family had words for our own team, from the stands. “Why is he doing this?” and other comments like that. I don’t think anyone knew who we were, since Peyton and I were late to the game. Without intending to call us out, Peyton told me, “I want to say hi to daddy.” She whispered, “Hi, Daddy,” twice, but Dave didn’t hear her on his way to the mound in the 5th inning. Finally, she got more of a breath and said, “HI DADDY!” He turned and waved at her, as she waved back. All of a sudden, the people in the stands turned to us to look where that was coming from. I hid behind her, as she was on my lap. So embarrassing! Later, Dave told me another boy’s grandfather came up to him to tell him that he was pitching too high. Dave had to bite his tongue, and just said, “Okay”, when both of us had a mind to hand him the ball and tell him to go pitch himself! Zen. Dave can’t explain to the guy that he can’t pitch lower as the ball wouldn’t fly correctly, or he’d have to get down on his knees. And…about half of the kids can hit off of Dave’s pitching. And that if he could throw it lower, he’d have to throw it faster to make it get there, but the other kids can’t hit it as fast. They don’t have their timing down yet. Dave wants to work with them all to get them used to his pitching, but it’s not possible yet with all the kids. It is reassuring that Brandon is hitting off of him well! The team lost, though score wasn’t technically being kept, but Dave reminded the kids that it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you played the game. The kids did great! They put some plays together, and Dave told me that they had a 5 run inning! They had to end the inning because they scored their max of 5 runs. Too bad I missed it; I probably was in the middle of walking there. Next time, we’ll get there earlier, but we wanted to leave directly from the field to get up to my grandma’s 88th birthday. I’d gotten her some brittle from the art and wine festival. We had a nice dinner, then headed home to get showered and in bed. They were in bed by 830 pm, so not too bad. We have a full week this week!
