Social

Tonight, we had a PTA social at the neighborhood cabana club.  I was hesitant to go as I ran errands after work while Dave picked up the kids.  I didn’t get home until late, but picked up some cookies to bring.  It was still raining, and I really wanted to go to the gym, but after getting the kids down for bed by 745 pm, I headed over.  The party was still in full gear, with wine and desserts mostly.  I put on a name tag, and pulled up my big girl pants to go start a conversation with a friend from our readers’ group.  We chatted for a bit, then I headed over to talk to one of the drama leads.  I wanted to put in a good word for Brandon, who will be one of 11 third graders performing.  She’s also a reader, so I knew who she was, but she didn’t necessarily know who Brandon was.  Good thing?  Bad thing?  Then, I made my way around to another reader, as I seem to gravitate and feel most comfortable around them.  Finally, I was approached by a “stranger” and I got to know a new friend (go me!)  We chatted about our backgrounds and kids, and then a mom came up to me to chat with me.  I thought she was just coming up to “ask me a question” about reading.  But she came to ask me to be on a nominating committee for the next year’s PTA board.  Oh man.  I asked her if 1) I had to talk in front of a big group (no) and 2) if I had to BE on the board next year (another no, unless I was interested).  I told her that I needed at least another year before jumping into something like that.  But I’d be happy to help select the board for next year.  Hopefully there are enough interested parties that there will be no need to throw myself into the ring.  But just being in this reader program has definitely brought me out of my shell and into the PTA world.  Yikes!  It also didn’t help that I got a welcome hug from the PTA president (a fellow KP-ian).  She is very vocal and very convincing, so I’m hoping my “no” skills can be sharpened, especially since she is also on the nominating committee as she has served her 2-year presidential term.
