Peyton, Brandon and I headed out to the field about 20 minutes before practice. I was throwing balls to her, and she was throwing them back, only I didn’t have a glove, so I was trying my best to bare-hand catch the balls. Brandon was bored, and was picking at grass nearby. Soon, the coach came up and introduced himself. He wasn’t at opening day or the first practice due to a family event, but he went up to Peyton to hi-five her. She did give him five without much hesitation. More girls started to show up, and then Dave headed over from his field to pick up Brandon. He got to meet one of assistant coach’s wife, and then headed out. Peyton was concerned because Sydney wasn’t there at the beginning, and I thought it was going to be a problem for her, but she headed out just fine. She did a great job listening to the various coaches through the three stations – throwing, batting and fielding. It was great to have a small group, and Peyton responded well. In fact, one of the stations, she was throwing at a balloon tied to the backstop. One of the balls came over the backstop over toward me. I didn’t know what or where it’d come from, but the Head Coach came over to retrieve it, then told me, “Peyton’s got an arm.” I told him she needs to work on her accuracy. They even spent some time off the tee, batting off pitched balls. She made some contact with the ball, then the highlight of her day was the hair ribbons the coaches’ daughters made for the girls. They were pretty awesome. Oh, and she got to do cartwheels on the grass…sigh…

We walked over to join Dave and Brandon in practice. Brandon wasn’t listening well. Dave made him go walk around and come back, and I think that helped a little, as he caught a pop fly in center field. After everyone left, one kid remained. I had the kid’s parents’ information from the school directory, so I was calling one parent while Dave was calling another. I was a bit short with the dad when I informed him that practice was done.
