Play Date

Last night, I got an email that asked if Peyton could come to a playdate at one of her classmate’s house. I work with the mom on the art lessons, so I know her and thought it would be a great idea! She had asked for Wednesday, but I didn’t want to mess around with CDC pick up, etc, so I suggested today after my shorter work day. She suggested 4 pm at her house. I asked Dave to tell Peyton this morning. I went to pick Peyton up around 245 pm, and she told me, “Four o’clock. Playdate with O, right? He has a trampoline, legos, and a bunk bed!” I asked her if daddy told her about it, and of course, she said no (Dave said “I forgot”), “O did.” So, we came home and she exactly 1 hour to get her stuff together. Piano, writing workshop that she messed around in at school, and cleaning up before it was time to go. Brandon and I were going to go to the library to pick up books/DVDs and return some others. We saw O outside his house and he was playing shy and hiding behind the car. We entered the house and his older brother was playing piano with the teacher. O’s mom showed us around the house and offered for us to stay or not. The kids went outside to jump on the trampoline, and they were having a good time. She brought out food, and immediately, Brandon wanted to stay. Watermelon and chips. Soon, Peyton and O came in, too. We’d been there 15 minutes, then the lesson ended. A came over and said, “I know you! You played baseball. Dodgers! I was on the Astros.” They’d seen each other at a mutual friend’s birthday party, too. Well, with that, both kids were staying and so was I. We chatted while all four kids played outside, then the kids swapped, with Peyton playing with A outside, and Brandon and O playing with who knows what inside. Later, O’s mom offered Peyton some matzah ball soup, which had butternut squash and other veggies. She ate it with some croutons, and matzah bread. She was digging the Jewish food for Passover! I had a bowl, too, while Brandon respectfully declined. A joined us, and preferred the adult conversation, though waited for Peyton to be done before they all went out to play on the trampoline. I was a bit afraid of three or four of them on the trampoline, playing three flies up, then suddenly, Peyton fell out over the back end, and slowly rolled and did a sommersault over the edge. She hit her head on the concrete, but luckily, the bulk of her fall was over her hands. Ugh. She started to hold her head and cry. We all saw it, and I was trying not to overreact, since O’s mom had told me to “let the kids be kids”. I slowly went out, and at this time, they got her an ice pack while she cried it out. I told her to just hang out and sit and watch for awhile while she held the ice pack to her head. O’s mom thought she hit the grass, but I was certain it was a portion of the edge of the brick. Peyton confirmed it was the brick. Soon, she was playing again, with the ice pack haphazardly on her head. O’s mom was telling me how she volunteers in class every Monday. I’m sure she’s seen Peyton at her “worst”, but she was very positive. Despite this, we were invited to her house. O’s dad came home, and he could tell Peyton was very active. I could tell I should leave soon, since O had TKD at 6 pm and I wanted to go to the library still. I thought it closed at 6 pm, but we lucked out, and it only closes on Fridays and the weekends at that time! We picked up our reserved items and returned our books. We headed home, knowing Daddy was home as we drove by on our way to he library. We got them dinner, and quickly got them ready for bed. Brandon read to me tonight, after Dave cut his hair for his head shot tomorrow at school. Brandon told me he had such fun today. It was fun to see, and none of the kids were arguing with one another, not even mine! Within the same day that we got the playdate, we also got an invite for another classmate of P’s, her former teammate last year. When I responded to the invitation, D’s mom said, “It was really important to him that she be there.” So cute! So, Peyton’s best boy friends are two Jewish boys. And she’s reading Anne Frank! Oi vay! No pictures, as I just wanted the kids to “be”.
