Sibling Agreement?!

Today, I received an email that practice was cancelled due to rain. Yippee! I get two more hours of my life back 🙂 Brandon and Dave didn’t have scheduled practice, so they were already free. We went to piano as usual when Brandon told me he didn’t have his folders! We went back to school, and luckily, the substitute teacher was still there. He quickly got what he needed, then we were back at piano for the rest of Peyton’s lesson. The kids switched, and once we were done, we headed home. Brandon got the rest of his math and reading done before we headed to the library to pick up our reserved audio books. I’d gotten some of the cd’s of books Brandon has already. We’ll listen to them on the way down, and at least 75% of the car will be listening. Poor Driver, though Brandon is sure that Peyton will fall asleep. I’m sure I will as well. Brandon wanted to know if we had anything planned after the library. I told him no, and he asked, “Oh, so can we stay a little longer, I always feel so rushed to pick a book!” So, we did. He was looking in the non-fiction section when he told me he wanted a book on Alcatraz. He’s fascinated by the old jail. I told him to go ask the librarian. He didn’t want to, and only wanted me to go with him. I told him he was old enough to do it himself. Peyton asked him, “Do you want me to go with you?” This is a change in roles for sure! He said, “Okay,” so I let them go together. I eventually followed them, as I felt funny being in the junior section without kids. They were patiently waiting for the librarian to give them a slip of paper with a number written down. Brandon thanked her, as did I, and we walked back to the non fiction section. The two of them found the stack where the number would fall and proceeded to look up the numbers. They were able to find the Alcatraz section on their own, looking up the numbers. Brandon selected a few before telling me he was done. We checked out, and then we walked back to the car. As we were, Brandon asked me about one of the parents we saw at school. Her face was peeling, like sunburned, but he asked, “What was going on with Ms. D’s face? I didn’t want to ask in front of her, since that’s kind of rude.” I told him what I suspected it was, and how it was important to wear sunscreen (I don’t know what was going on with it, but I was going for a teaching moment). I did commend them both for not asking in front of her. The ride home was silent! Both kids were doing their own thing, each with a book. Peyton was looking for hidden objects, which I guess is less car-sick-inducing for her, while Brandon was poring over his books. After awhile, Peyton started singing, “Nouns” from Brandon’s musical last week. He told me, “Mommy, she sounds kind of like Ariel.” I thought he was talking about a girl in drama, but then he said, “No, like she says things like the little mermaid.” Oh, a compliment?? Peyton responded, “Well, she does have a beautiful voice!” I was smiling in the front as we were all having a conversation, and there was no yelling or bickering between the two of them. When we got into the house, Brandon took a seat on the couch and read quietly to himself. Dave came home with some quinoa and California rolls. When I was done, I started packing up our things, when Peyton told me it was time to go play baseball outside. She said, “I’m going to go throw around with daddy in the yard.” Of course, Brandon wanted to join. Dave switched between base and softballs depending on who he was working with, and each kid knew what was theirs. Here’s what I caught of it…

I’m finishing up packing their things, and trying to keep everyone entertained for the roadtrip, which we haven’t done in almost a year! Since we’re driving during most of the day, we’ll need to pack plenty of stuff to do, as naps won’t last that long. This is just a prelude of things to come for the summer, so hopefully we’re sufficiently geared up. Dave got Brandon a new reader, so we’ll probably use that this weekend as well.
