Last day

this morning, my alarm went off at 930  and instead of me waking Peyton up, Peyton woke me up! We were up and at ’em and started with breakfast at Flour.  I had an oatmeal while Peyton opted for the sandwich again.  We were trying to figure out what to do for our last day.  Peyton wanted to do the freedom trail again so we walked to Fanueil hall to start.  She had to potty, and as we did, we saw a sign for a walking tour from the national park service.  It was an hour long and free! The tour was already in progress, but the guide said we could join in.  We’d only missed the introduction.  We headed out following him and listened to the facts about stops we’d made before along the trail.  We even saw some things we missed before.  We went to the Old North Church where Paul Revere got the signal from the lanterns up high.  “one if by land, and two if by sea.”  Two lanterns were hung as the Redcoats were crossing the “sea” or the Charles River.  Within three hours, we had 7500 steps!! We passed by Paul Revere’s house again but with more information.  After our tour ended, we went to see a printer and chocolate maker.  Peyton and I sipped hot cocoa how it would have been prepared in the old days.  We then toured the church itself.  Again, she wanted to go in, so I gave a donation to get us in.  We saw the pew of Paul Revere’s family.  Then we went to the burial ground close by.  Then we walked back to Fanueil hall and took the T to the Boston public library.  I’m glad to have used the Charlie card again! And super proud of us for getting along on the T.  Public transportation was never my thing.  But it sure beat making her walk about two miles in the heat. Though it was cooler than it had been.  We headed to the children’s section of the library. They were having another educational event at 330 so we had about an hour to burn. We selected books, and she read aloud to me.  We browsed both nonfiction and fiction.  Dave met us up there after his meeting and lunch were done.  We stayed for the book reading about presidents and some of the founding fathers.  Then there was a game of presidential bingo and a craft.  Peyton didn’t want to participate at first but I knew she really wanted to. So we encouraged her. The group was very small and she was one of the older kids.  Plus, she was the only kid with two parents there!! We wrapped up there and got a bite to eat. Peyton and I chowed down on hamburgers from Shake Shack. They were yummy!! Then we canned back to the hotel and walked back to the children’s museum.  After five, it was a dollar thanks to Target.  The line wasn’t too long and after about 515 pm we got in.  Dave’s strategy was to start at the top floor, the third, and work our way down.  It worked out well for the third floor but by the time we moved to the second, we caught up with the crowd.  Dave was getting the heebie jeebies thinking about all the germs we were being exposed to being there and the library. I tried not to think about it but we did come home and scrub down before eating a late dinner.  We took a walk again after dinner before coming back to the room.  We packed up showered and got ready for our trip home!! Can’t believe it’s been over a week since we slept in our own bed.  Camping started one week ago this evening!!

The door is missing!!  There’s a Lego thief out there!

While at the library, the librarian read a book about anecdotes from the presidents.  The one she read was for Thomas Jefferson.  But as she was showing the pictures, Peyton said, “That doesn’t look like Thomas Jefferson, that looks like Andrew Jackson!”  I had to get closer (she was sitting behind me even) and then I realized she was looking at the wrong page.   But was right in what she thought she saw…

I thought it was such an astute observation, I had to take a picture for reference.  I don’t know that I would’ve been able to guess him.  She’s clearly on a presidential high with all the history being thrown at her.  She did recount some of it to Dave. She definitely listens more when she was in a comfy bus versus walking around in the heat.
